The French motorcycle market fell by -16.7% in the first half of 2020 but the strong recovery observed since deconfinement gives confidence in the future, even if it remains very uncertain. MNC takes stock with the president of the CSIAM, Jean-Luc Mars.

However, the weather was not particularly favorable for business: "the weather was often cool and agitated during the month of June with several intense rainy-stormy episodes," reports Meteo France in its own report. The sellers of umbrellas and raincoats were therefore happier.

Kymco restarted very strongly, Mash counterattacked against Orcal, Sym was isolated and Peugeot was jostled by two new brands: Keeway and FB Mondial which left KTM and Suzuki from the Top 10 in June !

Sales of "large three-wheeled scooters" – also accessible to holders of the B license – jumped + 83% compared to last May, but the increase was limited to + 11.1% compared to June 2019. The However, the return to office in September promises to be busy with the arrival – this summer – of the new Yamaha Tricity 300…

Large cubes resist coronavirus a little better

Large cubes have accelerated by half compared to May 2020 (+ 52%) and by a third compared to June 2019 (+ 33.6%). Over the first six months, sales of large engines are down "only" by -15.3% while the small ones (125 cc and a hint less) have a little more trouble with -19.9%.

Yamaha continues to play the locomotive among the "over 125", followed by BMW, which equals it in terms of progress but no volume. Honda replaces Kawasaki on the monthly podium, Triumph has a good month, Harley-Davidson a much smaller one and moreover lets pass the English … and the Austrian KTM! Suzuki has improved significantly compared to last month but slips compared to June 2019, Ducati and Royal Enfield are still bringing up the rear, wheel to wheel.

From a health point of view, although the first wave of the epidemic is now behind us, the precautions and barrier gestures must always be respected … These necessary obstacles complicate the reception of customers in the stores and slow down their intake. in charge by salespeople, but do not affect the results !

MNC readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more observant than others – will have noted that the reassuring market advance last June was facilitated by the higher number of working days this year (21 Vs 19). Or a small 10% very appreciable, no ?

Considering the opening days of concessions – from Tuesday to Saturday – the month of June 2020 does not seem privileged with its 21 days of activities, as in June 2019. Nevertheless, "many are open on Mondays, some even on Sunday ", tells us Jean-Luc Mars, president of the motorcycle branch of the CSIAM (union chamber which federates and represents the interests of the French subsidiaries of foreign car, motorcycle and industrial vehicle manufacturers).

Due to the second wave looming on the horizon, wearing a mask will be compulsory in concessions – and all enclosed public spaces – from August 1 very, very soon.
