First half of 2010 down but…

The first half of 2010 has just ended with a general drop of -7.5% in sales of motorcycles in France: since January 1, 2010, 104,241 motorized two-wheelers over 50 cc have been registered against 112,704 in France. first semester 2009 (read).

The weather made poor French bikers see all the colors: like last year, bad weather (snow, floods but also heat waves this year!) Stuck motorcycles and scooters for days – even weeks. in concession.

In addition, these cold and hot periods alternated more abruptly than last year – in the opinion of MNC, but it would be necessary to ask for confirmation from Evelyne Dheliat – which has something to confuse buyers definitively. !

Fortunately, the month of June was a little milder from a meteorological point of view and allowed a resumption of activity: the indicators are recovering, with respectively -1.1% in 125 cc and even + 3.3% in large displacement.

From a statistical point of view, however, the situation is perfectly clear: the first half of 2010 had two working days more than the same period in 2009 (125 against 123) and the concessions remained open the same number of days (126).

The market for motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc is therefore continuing its descent that began at the end of 2008. Compared to last year, the drop is more pronounced for the 125 (-8.7%). However, it must be put into perspective by the competition from MP3 LT which remains very important.

Sales of large cubes slipped by -6.6% compared to the first half of 2009, but are far from their scores obtained in previous years: for five consecutive semesters (from mid-2006 to the end of 2008), we had recorded around 59,000 registrations against only 44,212 over the past six months.

The same names as last year monopolize the top twenty places in the manufacturer’s ranking and the Top 5 is also unchanged: Yamaha remains number one in France ahead of Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Piaggio.

The first two Japanese manufacturers suffered a similar drop in their sales (-14% compared to the first half of 2009), but the third plunged further (-17.6%) and the fourth almost managed to maintain its score (-1.7 %).

On the Italian side, the situation is even better since Piaggio exceeds its number of sales by 86 units during the first six months of 2009. As for the Germans of BMW, they managed to increase their registrations by 31.4% and return to therefore ahead of the Americans of Harley-Davidson, who could not maintain their crazy pace of last year (-9.4%).

Behind the Milwaukee firm, that of Hinckley – Triumph – suffered the same drop in speed (-9.3%) and had to let Peugeot go! Lion franc-comtois sales are down -3.1%, but in these difficult times, that is enough to grab market share.

Tenth last year, KTM (-16.7%) lost three places: Kymco (+ 37%!), Sym (-8.9%), but also Ducati (+ 15%) took the opportunity to make the interior to the Austrians. MBK finds itself in 14th place, its needle pointing negative (-9.3%).

In 15th and 16th place are Daelim (+ 11.4%) and Aprilia (+ 28.6%): the Koreans and the Italians of Noale gained two places compared to the first half of 2009. With a PDM almost halved in On the other hand, Jonway tumbles from 12th to 17th place. Similarly, Sky Team (-37.3%) slips two places.

Finally, Gas Gas is still bringing up the rear in the Top 20: with 893 motorcycles, the Spanish manufacturer’s registrations are up 23% compared to last year. The “other” manufacturers are doing rather well on the whole with 8813 “motorcycles of more than 50 cc” registered during this first half of 2010, ie a decline limited to -1.4%.

Now it’s time for the figures, graphics and analyzes of the two sectors: "125 cc" and "more than 125", then you will find our interviews with the managers of the brands in France who were kind enough to answer the four questions of Site !
