Market reports - Market report: the French are still fans of motorcycles and scooters - The French still love motorcycles!

The French motorcycle market (motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc) had an encouraging first half of 2014: sales of 125s stopped falling and those of large engines grew by + 6.7%. Half-year report Site.

The French still love motorcycles !

The first half of 2014 has just ended and faithful to the position, Site publishes the figures of the French motorcycle market, draws pretty graphics, delivers its analysis and establishes a first reassuring observation: the French remain fans of motorcycles and scooters !

The years 2007 and 2008 were two record years in France in terms of registrations of motorized two-wheelers over 50 cc ("motorcycles", excluding mopeds therefore): nearly 240,000 brand new motorcycles and scooters were brand new. found takers (reread our and our).

Since then, the, the French (compulsory for first-time buyers to drive a 125 or an MP3 LT type tricycle) and the (whose A2 category was sometimes a puzzle, especially for occasions) had suppressed the appetite of our compatriots (read our).

In, however, the French proved that they remained fond of motorcycles: 80,542 registrations were recorded over the first six months of the year against 76,771 in the first half of 2013, i.e. a recovery of + 4.9% (read our – not famous, what to take into account!).

The motorcycle market is regaining color

Among the reasons for this renewed interest in motorized two-wheelers (2WD), Site places the weather at the forefront, which is much better than in 2013: as a reminder, a gloomy winter 2012/2013 preceded a restless spring, cold and not very sunny…

This year, on the contrary, bikers and scooter riders took advantage of a particularly mild, dry and bright winter and spring, so many conditions that make you want to use your good old two-wheeler … and change it. , according to data compiled by the Auxiliary Automobile Association (AAA).

According to Meteo France’s climate report, temperatures were generally higher than seasonal norms, the rainfall was largely in deficit and the sky bright, especially in the northern half of the territory..

In addition to this engaging weather forecast, other determining factors were added: the arrival this year at certain brands of particularly appropriate new products, on the one hand, and the financing and low-level loan offers of the funds of the range, on the other, have been able to trigger the breakage of many piggy banks.

The French, some of whom have been chomping at the bit for six years, have ended up cracking their woolen stockings. At the rate things are going, the Livret A will soon cost money instead of bringing in: you might as well have fun with what the banks have not yet siphoned off, no ?!

The notion of pleasure being very present, even essential, in the purchase of a large displacement, it is logical that this segment has benefited more from this "tax incentive". Compared to last year, sales of "more than 125 cc" in the first half of the year thus increased by 6.7%.

Sales of 125 cc (plus some 100 or 110 cc), three quarters of which are scooters, are less affected by this type of argument. Likewise, the incidence of the weather is much less than in large cubes with very marked seasonality..

We can therefore not only be pleased that the "small-engine" sector equaled its score for the first half of 2013 (+ 0.7%), but also – and above all – that it improved that of the second with a total of 23,249 registrations. in the first half of 2014, compared to 21,203 over the previous six months. This is a good way to stop an uninterrupted decline over 13 semesters !
