Sales of motorcycles and scooters in France are at their lowest

Market reports - Sales of motorcycles and scooters in France are at their lowest - Sales of motorcycles are at their lowest

The first half of 2013 has just ended with a sad record: 76,771 registrations. This is, since the Site publishes its balance sheets, the lowest volume ever achieved by the motorcycle market in France…. Figures, Charts and Analysis.

Motorcycle sales are at their lowest

Exactly twelve months ago, Site examined a French motorcycle market (motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc) with two "speeds": reverse for 125 cc and neutral for large engines (read our).

Unfortunately, during the first half of 2013, the 125s fell back "full throttle", their sales registering a drop of -25.3%! But the big cubes had the bad idea to follow them: of course, the reverse of the "more than 125" was done at a slower pace, but it still reached -13.5%.

The causes of these declines are multiple: disastrous weather, 7-hour training (since 2011 for the 125), employment crisis, new European license (since January 19 for large cubes), high gasoline price, accentuated road repression, wait-and-see or even disaster, etc..

The impact of this set of factors on registrations is undeniable. The weight of each of them is however not easy to estimate … Fortunately, this point will be clarified on Site thanks to the usual reviews of the manufacturers (the first will appear tomorrow!).

The big cubes also drop

Of the five questions – the same for everyone to compare the answers! – sent this season by the Journal Moto du Net to the main players in the market, this is shown: "To what do you attribute the decline of the motorcycle market in France in the first half of 2013? ?".

We can already expect that the weather will point to the head of the reasons which led to the new decline in sales of scooters and motorcycles of "125 cc and more". Already not very starting in 2012, the first half of this year literally cooled potential buyers !

In fact, Meteo France’s spring 2013 report is clear: "After a gloomy winter, France experienced this year a particularly agitated, cold and little sunny spring. It was the coldest spring since 1987 and one of the rainiest since 1959".

Motorized two-wheelers have naturally suffered from this terrible weather and the market figures confirm it: there were 76,771 motorcycle registrations in the first six months of 2013, against 92,964 last year over the same period, i.e. net decrease of -17.4%.

The month of June was no exception and ended the first semester in a very sad way: -27.6% for the 125 and -11.5% for the big cubes. The return of the sun at the beginning of July will he correct – a little – the shooting ?

The dealers are in the starting blocks for the start of the school year and hope that the Motorcycle and Scooter Show to be held at the beginning of December at Porte de Versailles (Paris) will favorably extend the end of the 2013 season..

Objective for the big cars in this second half of the year: to return to the 40,000 units mark, a score that they have not reached for four seasons … As for the 125, we dare not establish a forecast: the The 31,000-unit "bottom" broke at the end of last year and small-engine cars continue to plunge. How far ?

76,771 registrations in six months

Despite a severe drop (-27.6%), Yamaha continues to dominate the motorcycle market in France with a total of 12,861 registrations. Like last year, the Iwata firm can thank its scooters which provide it with a "max" of registrations: the Xmax and the Tmax are respectively at the top of sales of the 125 and "+ of 125".

Always second, Honda follows the general trend (-18%) so that it maintains its market share just above 16%. Like Yamaha, the world number one suffers as well in 125 as in large displacement … The 2013 novelties arrived a little late, the good weather too !

Kawasaki completes the podium again at the end of June 2013 with 7,205 immats, ie a decline limited to -7.4% compared to the first half of 2012. The Greens take the opportunity to bite a point of PDM: 9.39%, c ‘ is not bad when we do not offer neither 125 nor scooter (maxi or mini) to the French !

Fourth with 6,197 registrations in six months, BMW is entering the "Top Four" for the first time, ahead of Suzuki by 35 units! The Germans keep expanding their range but their weapon of massive registrations remains the R1200GS !

Credited with a small -4.5%, the propeller brand gained 1.1 points in terms of PDM. A little more and the Japanese quartet no longer represented 1 in 2 sales in France (50.2% exactly), which was the case for the whole of 2012 (49.9% as a reminder!).

In fifth position therefore, Suzuki sees its infernal descent slightly slow down: -16.1% over the first half of the year, it is "less worse" than the whole market. The Yellows are back above 8% of PDM, thanks to their GSR 750 and their valiant Burgman, Gladius … who are still waiting for the next generation !

Harley-Davidson and Piaggio may well work on diametrically opposed segments – custom for one, scooter for the other! -, both have endured this harsh semester relatively well: if immats fell -8.1% for Americans and -7.5% for Italians, their market shares in France increased slightly.

Triumph is the only "big" manufacturer to have improved its score in France: 3714 motorcycles in the first six months against 3577 at the end of the first half of 2012. Its new Street Triple has conquered the hearts of the French: it is the only "European roadster" "of medium displacement to compete with the Japanese on what remains the heart of the market" more than 125 ".

Slightly down (-9.7%), KTM took advantage of Ducati’s breathlessness (-23.4%) to isolate itself in ninth position. The struggle between these two is however far from over: the Austrians are investing more and more in the roadster sector (390 Duke and soon 1290), while Ducati (re) tries its luck in Super Hypermotard. To believe that they are looking for each other !

Peugeot is ejected from the Top 10 and signs a -27.8% which could be alarming if the French did not release his very first three-wheeler this year: the Metropolis 400! Like its cousins from Pontedera (MP3 LT and Yourban), the tricycle "made in Mandeure" does not appear on the motorcycle sales tables published by the Automobile Auxiliary Association (AAA).

Asked by Site, Piaggio France announces that it has registered this first semester 2856 MP3 500 LT, 819 Yourban 300, 454 MP3 300 LT, 35 MP3 400 LT and 1 copy of the MP3 300 Hybrid (in addition to the 50 Yourban 125 and 20 MP3 125). That is a total of 4,165 scooters over 125 cc, but accessible to motorists. What tempt the Lion of Sochaux !

The second French brand, MBK, regains its 15th place despite a further drop in sales: -13% compared to the first half of 2012. The Saint-Quentin plant will take comfort in observing that its market share is rising very slightly, and that "his" Yamaha Xmax remains the best seller in our territory.

Finally, let’s underline the presence in 18th place of a third tricolor manufacturer (blue-white-red): Sherco! The small rising mark (strong, + 30.1%!) Is only six lengths from the Spanish Gas Gas in bad shape (-40.6%).

The "other" manufacturers as a whole are not much better off and record a hard -31.9%. Among them are in order: MV Agusta 21st with 411 immates in six months, Husaberg 339, Mash 337, Sky Team 335, Victory 185, LML 169, Royal Enfield 163, Husqvarna 159, HM 148, Hyosung 134, Keeway 131 , Yiying, James B and Revatto 105 (each), Regal Raptor 85, Gilera 77, Znen 72, Neco 71, Gowinn 66, Jincheng and Zhenhua 61, etc..
