Market reports - The invasion of the 125 continues ... -

Nice month of May for the motorcycle market: with an increase in sales of 20.7%, 26,296 new two-wheelers have escaped onto the roads of France. And while the 125 cc are at the party again, the big cubes are not left out.

In May 2006, the motorized two-wheeler market as a whole grew by 20.7% compared to May 2005. Despite three long weekends, the French really rushed into dealerships. !

It is again the 125 cc that benefit the most with an increase of 37.3% compared to the same month last year. A progression that corresponds to a total of 12,181 vehicles sold, almost as much as the large-displacement (14,115 units).

On the total for the year, after a rather feverish month of April (read), the small engines achieved an increase of 30.5%, reaching 38,473 sales !

In terms of large cubes, the trend in sales is back to a positive value with + 9% compared to May 2005. The Japanese still dominate with 71.3% of the market share, but the Europeans are recovering….

Market 125

Still at the top of the 125, Yamaha is following the market trend by posting an increase of 38.6% compared to May 2005. However, its three best sellers recorded a slight decline this month: if the Majesty and the YBR retain their 5th and 6th place respectively in the 2006 best-seller ranking with 1763 and 1663 sales, they fall into the monthly top 15.

We especially note that the X-Max loses its leading position in the "2006 cumulative" classification in favor of a particularly powerful Piaggio X8 (943 sales against 687 for the Japanese), boosted by a cheaper "street" version but still as good as ever. effective.

The Italian firm nevertheless recorded a disappointing month of May with a moderate increase in its sales (+ 8.6%) compared to that of the 125 market (+ 37.3%).

But the most fashionable manufacturer at the moment is French: Peugeot literally exploded its sales (+ 183% in May) by achieving the most beautiful growth in the sector, while this type of phenomenal increase had until then been reserved for manufacturers "in development path "such as Sym or Daelim. The French Lion therefore carves out a market share of 7.36% in May and allows itself the luxury of overtaking Suzuki (7.34%) !

This remarkable Sochalian breakthrough is mainly due to the Satelis, which confirms its takeoff by ranking second best seller of the month in the light category: 759 sales of Satelis out of a total of 897 sales of Peugeot. !

Other scooters made good progress, such as the Suzuki Burgman (670 sales) or the Honda Pantheon (548). The Japanese giant is also showing positive progress after two months of scarcity (+ 10.6%), even if it is still below the general rate.

Yamaha therefore remains ahead of Honda and Piaggio in the cumulative ranking with 8021 sales against 6947 and 6658. On the other hand, in the clan of "6% market share", if Suzuki retains the lead, Peugeot doubles its compatriot MBK … and this is surely not finished !

At the bottom of the table, the battle is no less fierce: Aprilia is struggling and records the only drop in the top 10 manufacturers (-10%). On the contrary, Daelim and Sym continue their respective climbs with + 222% and + 159.4% over the first five months. Finally Kymco signs an excellent month (+ 72.4%), its Dink scooter having sold 248 copies.

Large engine market

After two particularly tough months, Suzuki regains the lead in monthly sales and increases its slight lead in 2006 cumulative while its n ° 1 enemy, Yamaha, suffered a very slight drop of 0.9% in May.

Valiant soldiers in this bitter battle, the Bandit 650 and the Fazer 600 are fighting more than ever for third place in the ranking of sales by model (respectively 612 and 594 sales), even if the Yam still has a clear advantage over all models. first five months (2,473 sales versus 2,114).

But neither Suzuki nor Yamaha manage to match the fine growth of 9.2% for the entire sector. As for the two other Japanese – Honda and Kawasaki -, even if their volumes do not quite reach those of the leading duo (3026 for Suz ‘and 2797 for Yam’), they still sign a good month of May with respectively 2,341 and 2,132 sales.

The world number one benefits in particular from the good scores of its two novelties: the CBF1000 (read), whose road qualities have not gone – unlike its aesthetics – unnoticed in the eyes of the French, has sold 241 copies while at the same time the Deauville 700 (read) found 202 buyers.

The little Hornet totals only 344 sales and impatiently waits for the Japanese to give it a makeover in 2007 in order to return to the forefront…

Monopolizing again the first two places, the Kawasaki roadsters allow the Greens to achieve a nice increase of 41.5% of their sales. The Z750 – some 2005 models of which are still at attractive prices – once again leaves its competitors far behind: 946 sales compared to 706 for the ER-6, 676 for the Fazer-FZ6, 612 for the Bandit and 433 for the SV 650 (N and S).

In fifth place in May as in 2006, BMW is climbing the slope on which it had been slipping since the beginning of the year (+ 19.4% compared to May 2005). Faithful to the post, 252 R 1200 RT were sold in May 2006.

But it is a completely different Teutonic model that stands out: arriving in concession since mid-May, the F 800 S (read) has already conquered 89 French bikers. A great performance for the 2006 Bavarian novelty that we will not fail to watch closely next month !

Harley-Davidson is experiencing the same situation as the German: after two months in the red, the evolution of its sales again exceeds that of the market with + 10.4%. Finally, Triumph regains the advantage over Ducati in May as KTM continues to fall (-17.1%).

Aprilia is still in 10th place among manufacturers in May with 181 sales of motorcycles. In 2006 cumulative, the Italian now appears perfectly tied with Gas Gas (657 sales).

Finally, note the good results of Buell (107 motorcycles) which is notably ahead of Moto Guzzi (96), MV (29), Morini (19) and Voxan (9).
