He was not necessarily among the favorites of the bookmakers against Rins and Salom, but Maverick Vinales delivered the best of himself in Valencia to seize the victory and the Moto3 title in 2013. A superb and hard-fought final until in the last corner, while Salom cracked under the pressure and fell.

Departure. On the starting grid, tension is at its peak between the three drivers on the front row: Rins, Salom and Vinales. Logical, because whoever wins will win the title! Luis Salom was the quickest to turn into Valencia’s first left, but it wasn’t long before Maverick Vinales passed him. A priori victim of a technical problem during the warm-up lap, Alexis Masbou is forced to start from the pit lane.

The No. 25 – who has not won since in May – is looking to escape with Luis Salom and Alex Rins in his wake. The final explanation between the three contenders for the crown begins immediately, relegating their closest rivals (Folger, Miller, Marquez and Vasquez) to several cables..

In the fifth round, the leading trio opted for a waiting rhythm, despite the few threats of attack from Salom on Vinales. A little in difficulty, Alex Rins ends the march and is made several heat – including a phenomenal square when accelerating! – by forcing the pace. Behind, Jonas Folger and Jack Miller returned to contact with the top three, bringing to five the number of drivers at that time able to win the final.

Pressing from a few bends, Luis Salom took action and took control of the event ahead of Vinales, Rins, Folger and Miller. Almost 3.5 seconds later, Alex Marquez fights with Effren Vasquez. John McPhee falls and gives up.

At the start of the ninth lap, Maverick Vinales delays his braking at the entrance to the first left and slips under the fairings of the official KTM of Salom: the n ° 25 returns to the lead, to the applause of his team and the public . Niklas Ajo, then Livio Loi take turns at fault, while Alexis Masbou is forcing to come back up. The Albigensian has returned to the wheels of the Spanish driver Ana Carrasco, to whom he would steal 10th place. !

In front, Alex Rins is now showing his game: the n ° 42 brakes Salom, then overtakes Vinales and takes the reins of the event ten laps from the finish. Perhaps distracted by all this pressure, Luis Salom – leader of the championship since – presents himself badly in a left turn: slightly out of line when diving to the rope, the n ° 39 loses the front of his KTM and part in the gravel.

The Mallorcan can start again in 16th place, despite visibly significant damage to his motorcycle: his left fairing is torn off, which does not prevent the n ° 39 from sending big gas with the energy of despair. While knowing that his chances of winning the title are now practically nil…

At the head of the race, Vinales and Rins repeatedly exchanged first position under the eyes of Folger and Miller, who do not mix – and that’s good! – to this battle of the leaders. This quartet suddenly turns into the trio following the fall of Jack Miller: sad end of the season for the n ° 8, who fought like a lion all year with his Honda and who will ride next year at KTM.

Three laps from the finish, Alex Rins takes the advantage over Maverick Vinales and the awaited battle finally begins! The lap times fall, while Vinales forces to make Rins waver: the n ° 25 is visibly faster entering curves, but struggles to maintain his advantage until the exit….

Arrival. Maverick Vinales applies himself and manages to pass Rins, who attempts a final attack on the stretch: the n ° 42 dives inside at the entrance of this tricky downhill curve, but Vinales uncrosses and finds himself better placed for run victorious towards the finish line !

Maverick Vinales in brief

  • Born January 12, 1995 in Figueres (Spain)
  • First Grand Prix in Qatar in 125cc in 201
  • First victory: French GP 125 in 201
  • Number of GP victories: 12 (including 3 in 2013)
  • Number of GP podiums: 31 (including 15 in 2013)
  • Number of GP poles: 10 (including 2 in 2013)

At the end, Jonas Folger blows second place to Alex Rins on the finish line for a thousandth (!) And completes this last podium of the season. Sportingly, despite the disappointment linked to the loss of the title, Rins immediately congratulated Maverick Vinales, imitated shortly after by Luis Salom who finally finished 14th following his mistake..

The emotion is palpable between the three men, who gave us a magnificent show throughout the season and who show a very good sportsmanship by congratulating each other with sincerity. Ana Carrasco, Vinales’ teammate in the Calvo team, hands the world champion t-shirt to her compatriot with – too – sparkling eyes.

Delighted for her team, the young woman is also very happy with her magnificent 8th place signed in front of her audience. Alexis Masbou finished sixth, after starting from the pit lane on his Honda-FTR: that too is quite a feat !

In the championship, Maverick Vinales wins the title with 323 points, 12 more than Alex Rins and 21 more than Luis Salom. For the latter, the disappointment is undoubtedly the most acute since he led a large part of the season and won the most races this season: 7 wins against 6 for Rins and 3 for Vinales…
