The Brazilian Grand Prix lap by lap
Tests and warm-up in the dry, new set of tires for Bridgestone, new Twin Pulse engine for Desmosedici and unstable tuning of Rossi’s Yamaha on the bumpy track of Rio … Lap by lap.
The trials and warm up took place in the dry. For the race it is much hotter than during practice, which promises some difficulties on the tire side..
Many unknowns hover over this Brazilian Grand Prix before the start: will the new Bridgestones be able to compete better with the Michelin? Will the Desmosedici’s new Twin Pulse engine allow Capirossi and Bayliss to return to the forefront? Will the young people of the 125 continue to shake up the hierarchy? Can Randy De Puniet keep his leadership in the championship, facing the threat of Porto and Pedrosa? And finally, would Rossi succeed in finalizing the tuning of the Yamaha, which he finds very unstable on the bumps of Rio? The responses in turn-based…

It was Barbera who took pole, accompanied on the first row by Dovizioso, Lorenzo and Pasini. The second row is formed by Stoner, Locatelli who failed to improve their time from the day before, Giansanti and Nieto. 3rd line: Ballerini, Ui, Jenkner and Borsoi. Di Meglio and Giansanti, victims of a big fall on the second day, were taken to hospital after losing consciousness. Fortunately, they are both present for the race and Mike Di Meglio starts from 16th position. Barbera was burnt to the second degree by his tire and wears a huge bandage on his neck on the starting grid … In the warm-up, Stoner is the fastest in front of Kallio on the other KTM, then Lorenzo, Dovizioso, Barbera, Locatelli, Simoncelli, Corsi and Nieto.

It was Stoner, who had emerged from the second row, who took the best start followed by Locatelli, Dovizioso, Lorenzo, Pasini, Giansanti, Barbera, Ballerini and Ui. Gadea falls from the first corner. In the back straight, Lorenzo, thanks to the draw, passed Locatelli and Dovizioso, who also passed the Italian. Barbera passed 5th ahead of Pasini and Giansanti. Nieto passed 9th ahead of Ui, Corsi, Kallio, Simon, Jenkner and Borsoi. Fabrizio Lai widens in the turn at the end of the straight line and falls into the gravel. Stoner takes a few steps ahead of Lorenzo, who seems to be struggling to keep pace with the Australian and is sticking with Dovizioso a bit.
At the 1st passage Stoner leads past Lorenzo, Dovizioso, Locatelli and Barbera, then a few pitches, Pasini, Giansanti, Ballerini, Nieto, Ui, Kallio and Corsi. Di Meglio climbed back to 19th place after a bad start. Barbera passed Locatelli in the opposite straight line, Lorenzo came back in contact with Stoner. Giansanti passed Pasini. Barbera passed 3rd in front of Dovizioso under braking. Lorenzo takes the lead in front of Stoner, Giansanti pushes ahead and releases Pasini, returning to the leaders.
On the second lap, Barbera took the lead ahead of Lorenzo. On lap 3, Barbera leads ahead of Lorenzo, Stoner, Dovizioso, Locatelli and Giansanti. Pasini, Ballerini, Nieto, Kallio and Simoncelli, author of the best lap, follow a few lengths. Di Meglio is 20th. On the opposite straight, Dovizioso tries the inside on Lorenzo while Stoner tries the outside. Braking leaves the positions unchanged, but Barbera takes the opportunity to take a 7/10 lead. On the 4th lap, Barbera, who had the fastest lap, leads ahead of Lorenzo, Stoner, Dovizioso, Locatelli and Giansanti. Still in the back straight, Dovizioso tried the inside again and this time managed to pass Stoner and Lorenzo after braking three abreast, the Australian also passing Lorenzo. Dovizioso had a nice heat a few turns further, but managed to stay on his wheels and keep his 2nd place.
On lap 5, Barbera led by a second ahead of Dovizioso, Stoner, Lorenzo, Locatelli and Giansanti. Nieto moved to 7th position with 3.9 seconds, leading the chase with Ballerini, Pasini, Kallio and Simoncelli. Corsi is 12th at 7.8 s, Di Meglio 19th at 10 s. Dovizioso, who had sensed the danger, gradually returns to Barbera. On the 6th lap the positions are unchanged, but the lead gap is reduced. Marketa Janakova, the 16-year-old Czech girl, falls and leaves unconscious but ultimately harmless. In the 7th lap, Dovizioso almost came back to Barbera. Simoncelli passed 8th in front of Pasini and Kallio. The lead junction is in the back straight, forming a group of six leading men.
On the 8th pass, the leading group is unchanged. Di Meglio is 17th. On the 9th lap, with spectacular braking, everything changed: Stoner took the lead ahead of Lorenzo, Dovizioso, Locatelli, Giansanti and Barbera. Stoner tries to take off again, but Lorenzo won’t let him! Barbera passes Giansanti again. In the 10th lap, Stoner leads ahead of Lorenzo, Dovizioso, Locatelli, Barbera and Giansanti. Nieto is 4 seconds, Simoncelli 5 seconds, Ballerini and Pasini 6 seconds, Bautista almost 10 seconds. Lorenzo crashed in the high-side in the turn following the pit straight. Furious at being trapped, he tries to raise his bike but has to give up. Dovizioso narrowly avoids him, giving Stoner a head start. Barbera passed 3rd ahead of Locatelli and Giansanti. But on the 11th lap the gap narrowed again and Dovizioso gradually brought the group back to the leading man, helped by the KTM’s slower speed on the opposite straight. Barbera brakes Dovizioso at the end of it and passes 2nd.
In the 12th round, the five leaders are grouped again. Nieto, 6th, turns faster than the leading group and gradually reduces his gap. At the end of the straight line, Barbera tries to take the lead under braking but misses, widens and lets Stoner and Dovizioso pass again, who immediately take advantage of it. Di Meglio passed 15th ahead of Pesek and Jenkner in distress. In the opposite straight, Barbera passed Dovizioso and then, on momentum, took the lead from Stoner who, surprised, let Dovizioso pass in 2nd place. On lap 13, Barbera leads ahead of Stoner, Dovizioso, Locatelli and Giansanti. Nieto 6th is joined by Simoncelli. In the turn at the end of the finish straight, Locatelli widened and Giansanti took the opportunity to pass 4th. Both men lost 8 / 10ths in the operation.
At the 14th lap, Barbera still leads ahead of Stoner and Dovizioso. Giansanti clings to return by bringing back Locatelli. Di Meglio is 14th. On the 15th lap, Stoner regained the lead ahead of Barbera, Dovizioso, Giansanti and Locatelli back in contact. 4.6 seconds later, Simoncelli 6th passed Nieto. Mike Di Meglio passed 13th ahead of Simon and Pellino. Stoner, who tries to set off on his own, seems more comfortable in the winding but gets caught every time in the straights.
In the 16th lap, Stoner, Barbera and Dovizioso are grouped together. Locatelli moved back to 4th ahead of Giansanti. Locatelli made the inside to Dovizioso and regained 3rd place, but thanks to the draw in the back straight, Dovizioso passed his compatriot.
On the 17th lap, the five men are still grouped in the same order. A few turns later, Barbera took the lead under braking ahead of Stoner, who tried to cross again in vain. Stoner brakes again at the entrance to the 18th finish straight. Dovizioso made the inside at Barbera two corners ahead and came back to 2nd. Barbera attacked on the next corner but didn’t pass, Stoner taking the opportunity to take another step ahead. In the opposite straight, Barbera passes Dovizioso again with the help of the suction and reattaches Stoner.

The Australian still leads on lap 19 but Barbera brakes at the end of the straight. Stoner came back again just before the back straight but on the draw Barbera and Dovizioso took the lead, Dovizioso braking the stronger of the three to take the lead. Stoner attacks and immediately passes Barbera. At the start of the last lap, Barbera tried her luck but it didn’t go through. Stoner took the lead under braking, with Barbera also trying to pass the Italian without success. In the straight line, Dovizioso takes the lead again, followed by Barbera who takes the lead under braking! Stoner passed 2nd again in front of Dovizioso, who returned to the outside on the next turn but widened, Stoner taking the opportunity to return to 2nd. Dovizioso resumes his trajectory and finds Locatelli there, the two men rubbing their fairings without consequence: hot! Barbera closes the doors until the end, Stoner tries everything for everything but Barbera remains in the lead and wins ahead of Stoner, Dovizioso, Locatelli and Giansanti. Simoncelli passed 6th ahead of Nieto, Kallio 8th, Bautista 9th, Pasini 10th, Ballerini 11th, Di Meglio 12th, Corsi 13th, Simon 14th and Pesek 15th. Di Meglio has to get help to get off his machine, visibly affected by his fall the day before and the resulting sprain: he had an even better race !

In the championship, Dovizioso with 125 points still leads, Barbera 109 is doing the right thing by taking 2nd place from Locatelli 106, Stoner also approaching with 104! Pedrosa took the best start ahead of Poggiali, Elias, De Puniet, Rolfo, West, Porto, Nieto, Debon, De Angelis, Aoyama, Battaini, Nohles, Bataille and Baldolini. Elias passed Poggiali second on the second corner, while Pedrosa pushed ahead to go on his own. West passes Rolfo under braking from the opposite straight line and Bataille passes Nohles. Porto also passes Rolfo. Eric Bataille, who fell three times during practice in the same turn, was trapped in the first lap of the race at the same place! Nieto also passes Rolfo. De Angelis is 9th on the first lap. Vincent is 16th, Guintoli 17th, Marchand 19th, Nigon 20th, Lefort 22nd. In the back straight, Poggiali passes Elias again and the two men glue Pedrosa back together. Randy De Puniet, too, redoes the junction a few bends later.
Pedrosa, Poggiali, Elias and De Puniet together start the second round. Porto, author of the fastest lap, came back 5th ahead of West, Nieto and De Angelis. Entering the back straight, West misses and falls, interrupting his pretty streak of five races in the points … Guintoli takes 15th ahead of Nohles and Vincent. On the 3rd lap, Pedrosa still leads ahead of Poggiali, Elias, De Puniet, Porto which returns, Nieto and De Angelis a little further, then Rolfo behind, Aoyama, Battaini, Debon, Olive, Guintoli 13th, Davies, Marchand 15th and Vincent 16th . Lefort is 21st, Nigon 22nd. Poggiali takes the lead in front of Pedrosa at the entrance to the opposite straight. Porto got back into Randy’s wheels. De Angelis passed 6th ahead of Nieto. On lap 4 De Angelis let go of Nieto and he is the fastest on the track this lap. On lap 5, Poggiali still leads. Randy keeps his 4th place ahead of Porto and De Angelis is back. Elias passed Pedrosa under braking for 2nd place. Guintoli is 14th.
On the 6th lap, Pedrosa seems to have trouble following Poggiali and Elias. De Puniet became more and more urgent. But in the back straight, Pedrosa put on some coal and put the leaders back together, slightly behind De Puniet and Porto. On the 8th lap, Randy picks up and distances Porto in turn. Guintoli is 13th ahead of Marchand 14th. Pedrosa came back to 2nd on the draw from the opposite straight. In the 13th lap, De Angelis made the connection with the leading group. Aoyama passed 8th in front of Rolfo and comes back on Nieto. On the 10th lap, the six leaders are in the same order but Randy passes 3rd in front of Elias in the next turn. In the back straight, Randy widens under braking and is passed by Elias, Porto and De Angelis. As a result, on the 11th lap, Poggiali and Pedrosa were a few steps ahead of Elias, Porto, De Angelis and De Puniet. Aoyama joined Nieto. Olive gives up.
On the 12th lap, Randy De Puniet stalled completely, not managing to keep his bike tight: his front tire no longer allowed him to keep pace … "I was losing the front and I almost fell six or seven times", explained the Frenchman at the end of the race, disappointed but all the same"satisfied to have saved eight points"in the Championship. In the back straight, Porto passes Elias in 3rd position. On the 13th lap, Poggiali and Pedrosa are detached, Porto, Elias and De Angelis follow, then De Puniet sees Nieto and Aoyama return, unable to do anything to contain their ascent. Guintoli is 12th, Marchand 13th.
On the 14th lap, Porto, who is pushing ahead, seems to come back to the two leading men, Elias and De Angelis in his wheel. Nieto and Aoyama pass Randy De Puniet now 8th. Marchand passed 12th ahead of Guintoli. In the 15th lap, Poggiali and Pedrosa were 1.3 s ahead of Porto and Elias, 2.2 over De Angelis, 13.6 over Nieto, 14.5 over Aoyama, 16.6 over De Puniet, 17.3 over Rolfo, 25 on Debon and Battaini and 35 on Marchand and Vincent.

On the 17th lap, Rolfo joined and passed Randy De Puniet 9th. Entering the corner leading to the 18th pit straight, Elias forces the inside and passes Porto who immediately lose a few lengths, De Angelis in his wheel. De Angelis also passes Porto, victim of an engine problem and ignition cutouts, which will be forced to retire! On lap 19, Poggiali still has a leech named Pedrosa on his wheel. Elias and De Angelis follow after 2 seconds then Nieto, Porto in slow motion and Aoyama, Rolfo and De Puniet. On lap 20, Poggiali and Pedrosa increased their lead over Elias to 3 seconds. De Angelis is at 3.7 s, Nieto at 18, Aoyama at 19, Rolfo at 25, De Puniet at 29 and Debon at 33.
At the start of the last lap, Pedrosa is paneled by his stand, urging him not to take unnecessary risks: "P2 OK". He still shows his front wheel to Poggiali on this last lap, but does not force his talent. Poggiali therefore wins his first race of the season ahead of Pedrosa and Elias. De Angelis finishes excellent 4th and 1st private ahead of Nieto 5th, Aoyama 6th, Rolfo 7th, De Puniet 8th, Debon 9th, Battaini 10th, Marchand 11th, Guintoli 12th, Davies 13th, Matsudo 14th and Heidolf 15th. It was Roberts on his Suzuki who caused the surprise, taking pole ahead of Biaggi and Hayden. Gibernau, Barros and Capirossi form the 2nd row while Tamada, Rossi and Nakano follow in 3rd and Bayliss, Edwards and Checa in 4th. During the warm up, Gibernau sets the record straight by setting the best time ahead of the official Honda of Hayden and Barros, then Tamada, Biaggi, Roberts, Rossi, Edwards, Capirossi and Bayliss.
Biaggi makes the hole shot ahead of Roberts, Hayden, Barros, Rossi, Gibernau, Tamada, Melandri, Edwards, Capirossi, Xaus and Nakano. But from the first corner, Roberts took the lead in front of Biaggi. Edwards passed 8th in front of Melandri in the back straight. On the 1st lap, Roberts still leads in front of Biaggi, Hayden, Barros, Rossi, Gibernau, Tamada, Edwards, Melandri, Capirossi, Nakano who overtook Xaus, Abe who overtook Checa and Bayliss. Gibernau attacks and passes Rossi. On the opposite straight, after coming four abreast, Biaggi emerges as the leader ahead of Hayden, Roberts and Barros … while Gibernau loses the front and falls as he tries to attack Barros !
On the second lap, Biaggi, who had the fastest lap, leads ahead of Hayden, Roberts, Barros, Rossi, Tamada, Edwards, Melandri, Nakano, Capirossi, Checa, Xaus, Abe and Bayliss. In the back straight, Barros passed 3rd ahead of Roberts. Hayden returned to Biaggi. On the 3rd lap, Barros 3rd set the best time. Capirossi came back 8th ahead of Nakano and Abe. Rossi struggled to keep up and failed to make up for some lengths of delay midway through the circuit. Bayliss then fell 13th and gave up. On lap 4, Hayden 2nd set the fastest time. Tamada attacks and passes Rossi under braking at the end of the straight line, but Rossi crosses and passes immediately. Edwards, 7th and first behind, is 1.2 seconds behind Tamada, Capirossi in his wheel.

On the 5th lap, Rossi passed 4th ahead of Roberts at the end of the pit straight. He was then 1.7 seconds behind Biaggi. Tamada passed 5th ahead of Roberts. On the 6th lap, Biaggi and Hayden lead ahead of Barros a little further, Rossi and Tamada then, then Roberts. Melandri attacks Checa, fails to take the rope, pulls aside and takes Checa to the outside of the track … Abe takes the opportunity to pass !
On the 7th lap, Rossi and Tamada, who scored the best lap, reunited Barros. Roberts is left behind and sees Capirossi swoop down on him, who has passed Edwards. Rossi passes Barros at the cost of a magnificent interior and comes back 1.5s from Biaggi. On the next lap, Rossi took Barros and Tamada to the lead, Capirossi having joined Roberts. Tamada took advantage of a mistake by Barros who moved aside to take 4th place. Biaggi has put on some charcoal and Rossi is 1.7s behind. Capirossi passes Roberts in 6th position. Barros struggles to keep up with Rossi and Tamada, who quickly returned to the Italian’s wheels.
At the 9th lap, Biaggi and Hayden are still in the lead, 2 seconds ahead of Rossi and Tamada who let go of Barros. Capirossi, Roberts and Edwards are at 7 seconds, Abe at 12. Nakano, Checa, Xaus, Hopkins and Hodgson, passed Melandri which tumbles in the standings. On the 10th lap, Rossi and Tamada climb back up to the leaders. Tamada tries an interior on Rossi who brakes very late and forces the Japanese to withdraw. Barros lost 7 / 10th in this round. Rossi comes back within a second of Biaggi, Tamada already back in his wheel. But after the 11th lap, Rossi, who was trying to contain Tamada, brakes at the end of the straight line and lets the Japanese pass who immediately lets go of Rossi and sticks to Hayden’s wheel. !
On lap 12, Tamada took advantage of the suction and braked Hayden, passing 2nd and immediately sticking to Biaggi. Rossi loses the front end and falls! He tries to start again, but his Yamaha does not agree and he gives up! He had not fallen in the race since Mugello in 2001, and would later say that he regretted not managing his 4th place rather than trying to get back to the leaders…
On the 14th lap, Biaggi manages to contain Tamada while Hayden observes the fight from a few lengths. On the 15th lap, Capirossi came back and passed Barros for 4th place. At the end of the opposite straight line, Hayden returned to Tamada and attempted an unsuccessful attack. Capirossi takes 8 / 10th on Biaggi. In the 17th lap, Tamada came back again, leaving Hayden behind.
On lap 18, Biaggi and Tamada are still a few steps ahead of Hayden. Capirossi is 4th ahead of Barros, Edwards, Roberts and Abe. By the 19th lap, Tamada was still in Biaggi’s shadow, with Hayden closely following the lead. On lap 20, Biaggi zigzags to prevent Tamada from taking the suction, Hayden is at 8 / 10th, Capirossi at 6.8s, Barros at 9.2, Edwards at 11.3, Roberts at 14.5, Abe and Nakano at 24, Checa at 26, Hofmann and Hopkins at 32 and Melandri and Xaus at 38.

On lap 22, Tamada took the lead with a 7/10 lead over Biaggi, Hayden a little further. Xaus passed 12th ahead of Melandri. As the final lap begins, Tamada is more than a second ahead of Biaggi, himself more than a second ahead of Hayden..
In the end, Tamada crossed the line as the winner, the first of his career in the premier class, ahead of Biaggi and Hayden! Bridgestone will not only have taken pole but also the first step of the podium this weekend in Rio! Capirossi, who had a superb comeback, was 4th, Barros 5th, Edwards 6th, Roberts excellent 7th, Abe no less excellent 8th and first Yamaha, Nakano 9th, Checa 10th, Hofmann 11th, Xaus 12th, Melandri 13th, Mac Williams 14th and Hopkins 15th.
