The German Grand Prix lap by lap
With 93,748 spectators this weekend, the Sachsenring is not unanimous among the drivers. Rossi in particular, who desperately needs points to win the title, doesn’t like the German track … World exclusive turn-based !
Particular point of the Sachsenring: it is a small circuit of 3,871 m that is taken "upside down", that is to say in an anti-clockwise direction. Built in 1996 on the site that hosted open road races in the past, it was revised and corrected in 1998 and then in 2003 to better accommodate the powerful MotoGP.
A little less "turnstile" than before, it has only four right turns against ten left, which poses many problems to break in the tires. So some pilots like Randy de Puniet will do two training laps so as not to run on a too new right blank. !
The short straight of 780m has no influence on the draw for the finish line, placed very soon after exiting the last corner. In total, the drivers of the three categories therefore do more laps than elsewhere, on the slowest route of the season at average speed..

During the warm-up, Capirossi sets the best time: 0.1 s ahead of Pedrosa and Hayden, 0.2 s ahead of Roberts and Checa, 0.3 s ahead of Rossi who has found solutions since his weekend tune-up difficulties, 0.5 s ahead of Gibernau and Hopkins, 0.6 s ahead of Nakano, 0.7 s in front of Tamada, 0.8 s in front of Edwards, 0.9 s in front of Vermeulen and De Puniet, last driver in the second. Stoner, victim of a big fall, is declared unfit by the circuit doctor, impressed by the shock of his helmet although the scan suffered by the Australian in the hospital shows no injuries…
Departure. Pedrosa took full advantage of his pole position and took the lead ahead of Roberts, Hayden, Tamada, who hadn’t been seen for a long time at such a party, Melandri, Capirossi, Nakano, Hopkins and Rossi. Hopkins and Rossi on the vibrator pass Nakano while Pedrosa starts off strong immediately and takes a few steps ahead of Roberts. Hopkins and Rossi pass Capirossi who had fallen a little behind Melandri. At the bottom of the descent, Hayden brakes beautifully and suddenly takes the lead in front of Pedrosa and Roberts! Rossi finished 6th in front of Hopkins with an equally magnificent exterior !
In the first lap, Hayden leads ahead of Pedrosa, Roberts, Tamada and Melandri, a few lengths ahead of Rossi and Hopkins, Capirossi, Nakano, Gibernau, Vermeulen, Checa, Elias, Edwards, De Puniet, Hofmann, Ellison and Cardoso. At the end of the straight, Tamada attacked and passed Roberts for 3rd place. Melandri took advantage of the American’s forced gap to slip into 4th position. At the bottom of the descent, Hayden, Pedrosa, Tamada, Melandri, Roberts and Rossi took a few lengths at Hopkins. Capirossi and Nakano let go of Gibernau. Melandri delays his braking and passes Tamada, but comes out a little wide and the Japanese regains his 3rd position.
On lap 2, Hayden leads in front of Pedrosa with a little lead over Tamada, Melandri, Roberts and Rossi fastest lap. Melandri attacks and passes Tamada at the end of the straight. Rossi also tries to attack Roberts but is unsuccessful. Capirossi, Hopkins and Nakano try to resist. Vermeulen passed 10th in front of Gibernau. Hofmann is forced to retire for his national Grand Prix! At the bottom of the descent, Rossi again shows Roberts his front wheel, but the American still resists. De Puniet passed 14th ahead of Edwards.
On lap 3, Hayden led with a small lead over Pedrosa and Melandri fastest lap, then Tamada, Roberts and Rossi were a little ahead of Capirossi who let Hopkins and Nakano go. Hopkins came out of the corner at the end of the straight and had to pass Nakano 8th. De Puniet passed 13th ahead of Elias. Checa passes Gibernau. Rossi passed 5th ahead of Roberts at the bottom of the descent. Capirossi has returned to the American wheel.
On lap 4, Hayden again had Pedrosa, who had the fastest lap on his wheel. Melandri is a little further, then come Tamada, Rossi, Roberts and Capirossi. Further on, Nakano and Hopkins are almost joined by Vermeulen.
On lap 5, Hayden held the lead ahead of Pedrosa, Melandri, Tamada, Rossi, Roberts and Capirossi. Nakano, 2.9 seconds behind the leader, took a little lead over Hopkins, Vermeulen and Checa returned to the Australian’s wheel. De Puniet is 13th behind Gibernau. Hayden and Pedrosa have a small advantage over Melandri, Tamada and Rossi, themselves a few lengths ahead of Roberts and Capirossi.
At the 6th passage, Hayden and Pedrosa lead. Tamada caught up with Melandri on the draft, delayed his braking and moved up to 3rd. At the bottom of the descent, Tamada shifts inside Pedrosa and Melandri inside Tamada, but neither manages to pass..
On lap 7, Hayden picked up some air on Pedrosa, Tamada, Melandri, Rossi, Roberts and Capirossi. Nakano is at 3.5 s, Hopkins, Vermeulen and Checa at 4.1 s, Gibernau and De Puniet at 5.3 s. Capirossi seems to be struggling to keep pace on this lap, probably still crippled by pain. At the bottom of the descent, Melandri returns to 3rd in front of Tamada.
On the 8th lap, Hayden still leads in front of Pedrosa who shows him his front wheel but fails to pass. Tamada passed Melandri again on braking but pulled away and had to give way again. Rossi, Roberts and Capirossi follow 0.5s behind the American. At the bottom of the descent, Melandri attacks and passes Pedrosa while Rossi attacks and passes Tamada.
On the 9th lap, Hayden leads ahead of Melandri, Pedrosa, Rossi, Tamada, Roberts and Capirossi well back. Tamada took advantage of the suction and delayed braking to retake 4th ahead of Rossi. At the bottom of the descent Rossi attacks and passes again Tamada who resists but has to bow.
At the 10th lap, at the end of the straight, Melandri delayed his braking and took the lead in front of Hayden. Behind them, Capirossi took full advantage of the power of the Ducati to pass 6th in front of Roberts. But Capirossi is less well placed for the turn at the end of the straight line and Roberts plunges back under his wheel! On the tight right, Pedrosa took advantage of Hayden’s slight gap to slip through a mouse hole and pass 2nd. In the break to the right which precedes the descent, as he had done on the previous lap with Tamada, Rossi gets into Hayden’s wheel under acceleration, carries himself up to him and passes him unstoppably under braking in low. The 46 has moved up to 3rd position! At the entrance of the last corner, Roberts tries a very daring maneuver on Tamada: he cuts the line, tries to brake very late but suddenly loses the front, his bike mowing that of the Japanese who will remain groggy for a few moments. Roberts will immediately apologize and check on the unfortunate pilot left on the ground….
On lap 11, Melandri leads ahead of Pedrosa, Rossi and Hayden. Capirossi who managed to avoid the fall of the two pilots is 5th at 1.1 s, Nakano is 6th at 3.7 s, then at 4.4 s Vermeulen passed in front of Hopkins and Checa. De Puniet is still 13th but has lost contact with Gibernau. At the bottom of the descent, Rossi repeated the delayed braking stroke at Pedrosa and passed 2nd !
At the 12th lap, Melandri leads ahead of Rossi, Pedrosa, Hayden and Capirossi back in the wheel of the American. Nakano 6th at 3s released Vermeulen 1s behind him. Hopkins is 0.7s behind with Checa in his wheel. Gibernau came back and released De Puniet 1s behind him. In front, Rossi takes the lead in front of Melandri once again under braking at the bottom of the descent where he is definitely very comfortable !
On lap 13 Rossi leads ahead of Melandri, Pedrosa, Hayden and Capirossi. De Puniet, victim of an engine failure, is forced to retire … Melandri tries to attack Rossi early in the fast game but has to give in and let the Doctor take a few steps ahead. Capirossi is again slightly off the hook.
At the 14th lap, Rossi leads ahead of Melandri, Pedrosa, Hayden and Capirossi. Nakano further increased his lead over Vermeulen, Hopkins and Checa. In the long straight, Pedrosa slipped under Melandri’s wheel, which had moved slightly off the rope. Hayden seems to struggle to keep up as Capirossi hangs on.
In the 15th lap, Rossi, Pedrosa and Melandri lead. Hayden still seems to be struggling and Capirossi is still holding on. Vermeulen is 1s ahead of Hopkins.
On the 16th lap, Rossi, Pedrosa, Melandri and Hayden are grouped together again: the American seems to have regained his means and has completed his personal best lap.
On the 17th lap, Rossi leads with a small lead over Pedrosa, Melandri and Hayden but Capirossi gradually loses ground 1.6 seconds behind the leader. Nakano alone holds his 6th place. Gibernau has moved closer to Checa whom he threatens directly. Hayden plays the accordion again in the quick part, losing and reconnecting with Melandri.
At the 18th passage, Rossi leads ahead of Pedrosa and Melandri. Hayden is at 0.9 s. Capirossi at 2.1 s lost ground. Nakano is at 4.1 s, Vermeulen at 6.5 s and Hopkins at 7.1 s. Checa at 8.4 s picked up a little air on Gibernau at 8.9 s. Edwards at 16.2 s and Elias at 18.8 s.
On lap 19, Rossi, Pedrosa and Melandri were still 0.9 seconds ahead of Hayden who grabbed a few hundredths but failed to really pick up. Gibernau is back in the wheel of Checa while Pedrosa is again stuck to that of Rossi. Hayden remakes the junction…
At the 20th lap, Rossi leads ahead of Pedrosa, Melandri and Hayden. Capirossi is only 5th and Nakano alone 6th. Hopkins returned to Vermeulen and Checa regained the lead over Gibernau. At the bottom of the descent, Melandri delays his braking and passes 2nd in front of Pedrosa.
On the 21st lap Rossi leads ahead of Melandri, Pedrosa and Hayden. At the end of the straight, Pedrosa tries to delay his braking but Melandri resists and Hayden who comes in strong must enter the curve outside Pedrosa.
At the 22nd lap, Rossi still leads ahead of Melandri, Pedrosa and Hayden. Capirossi picks up 3.2 s behind the leader. Nakano is at 5.5 s, Vermeulen at 8.5 s, Hopkins at 9.1 s, Checa at 9.9 s, Gibernau at 10.6 s, Edwards at 19.9 s and Elias at 23.3 s.
On lap 23 Rossi still leads ahead of Melandri, Pedrosa and Hayden. Pedrosa comes back to 2nd in front of Melandri at the end of the straight line. At the bottom of the descent, Melandri again takes 2nd in front of Pedrosa under braking. Checa gets closer to Hopkins.
At the 24th lap, Rossi leads ahead of Melandri, Pedrosa and Hayden. Capirossi is 5th, Nakano 6th, Vermeulen 7th and Hopkins 8th comes back to Vermeulen under pressure from Checa.
On lap 25 Rossi still leads. Melandri takes a chance but also has to resist Pedrosa who himself remains under threat from Hayden! At the end of the straight, Pedrosa forced his braking but Melandri resisted and retained the advantage. Vermeulen, Hopkins, Checa and Gibernau are grouped together again. On the slower right, Pedrosa took advantage of Melandri’s gap to return to 2nd. At the bottom of the descent, Melandri delayed his braking, caught up with Pedrosa who tried to resist but had to give way and move away, which instantly benefited Hayden, who was better placed under acceleration to take 3rd! Rossi takes advantage of the fight behind him again to regain a small advantage.
On the 26th lap, Rossi has a very slight advantage over Melandri, Hayden and Pedrosa. Rossi tried to take the opportunity to get ahead and increased his lead halfway to 0.5 sec. Pedrosa seems to struggle to keep up with the pace imposed by Rossi.
On lap 27, Melandri did not ask himself any questions: he attacked at the end of the straight line and took the lead in front of Rossi with superb late braking! Pedrosa took the opportunity to get back into the Hayden wheel. At the bottom of the descent, Rossi attacks Melandri but the latter expected and resists. Checa and Gibernau pass Hopkins.
At the 28th passage, Melandri, Rossi, Hayden and Pedrosa are wheel to wheel. At the end of the straight, Hayden was forced to delay his braking to counter Pedrosa, forcing him to pass outside Rossi. The American still manages to catch the rope in front of his teammate. Behind them, Elias passed Edwards for 12th place. In the very tight right, Pedrosa tries to infiltrate under Hayden’s wheel who forces the Spaniard on the rope: the two men touch each other and Pedrosa stuck on the vibrator is forced to give in, losing a little contact on his teammate! Hayden immediately forces himself to come back to Rossi, himself glued to Melandri’s wheel! At the bottom of the descent, Rossi attacks and passes Melandri to regain control !
At the start of the last lap, Rossi leads ahead of Melandri, Hayden and Pedrosa. Capirossi 5th is only 0.7 seconds ahead of Nakano. Vermeulen is under threat from Gibernau and Checa who let Hopkins go. At the end of the straight, Melandri and Hayden try to attack the Doctor who delays his braking and dives while maintaining his position. Rossi takes a slight advantage in the twisty part as Melandri is stuck by Hayden and Pedrosa grabs. In the fast part, Melandri comes back to Rossi’s wheel. Hayden picks up very lightly and Pedrosa moves a lot.
Coming out of the break that controls the descent, Melandri comes close to Rossi who accelerates better and maintains the advantage. Under braking from the bottom Rossi takes the middle of the track to close the door, Melandri still attacks from the outside to both attack Rossi and resist Hayden who dives inside! Pedrosa seems beaten. Rossi keeps the rope and accelerates past Melandri who forces Hayden to stay on the outside! Pedrosa tries to take advantage but his maneuver is desperate and he must give in. Rossi enters the last corner on the inside, Melandri is beside him on the outside, Hayden just behind them with Pedrosa still trying to keep the rope! Rossi is once again in a better position to accelerate and maintains the advantage over Melandri. Hayden who had to give in still manages to keep the advantage over Pedrosa by just over 4 / 100ths !
Rossi shows if he still needed to that even in difficulty he can win: he is only eleven victories off Agostini’s record! Melandri 2nd and Hayden 3rd complete the podium. Pedrosa is 4th, Capirossi 5th, Nakano 6th, Vermeulen 7th, Gibernau 8th, Checa 9th, Hopkins 10th, Elias 11th, Edwards 12th, Ellison 13th and Cardoso 14th.
