News - Everything about the new Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom 2014 - Used SUZUKI

Suzuki took advantage of the 24H Moto du Mans to lift – finally! – the veil on the final version of the expected DL1000 V-Strom 2014. MNC tells you all about the new road maxi-trail of the Hamamatsu coat of arms, whose arrival in Suzuki dealerships is scheduled for the end of the year at an estimated price between 12,000 and 13,000 euros.

Suzuki took the opportunity to get up – finally! – the veil on the final version of the expected DL1000 V-Strom 2014. MNC tells you all about the new road maxi-trail of the Hamamatsu coat of arms, whose arrival is scheduled for the end of the year at a estimated price between 12,000 and 13,000 euros.

Better late than never !

Launched in 2002, the DL1000V-Strom gave birth to a 650 cc version two years later, before withdrawing in 2008 – in Europe – because of Euro3 standards. Since then, the V-Strom 650 has assumed the role of trail-roader at Suzuki alone. And not without success since of the 187,000 V-Stroms sold in the world for eleven years, 140,800 were 650 cc !

Of course, the "small" benefits arithmetically from its longer commercial longevity. But not only: from 2004 to 2008, the sales ratio between V-Strom 650 and V-Strom 1000 was about three to four times higher in favor of the 650 (18,200 V-Strom 650 in 2007 against 4,500 V- Strom 1000, for example).

But even if the V-Strom 650 performs well commercially speaking, Suzuki is aware that the current trend is maxi-trail: it is today the most popular category of motorcycles and one of the few not to know the crisis. A situation largely due to the "Kollossal" success of the BMW R1200GS (read in particular our).

Suzuki could not therefore let this opportunity pass any longer: for the brand as for its dealers and its customers, the return of the DL1000 V-Strom has become over the years an obvious one … Not to say a necessity, being given the great need for refreshing the Suz ‘range !

It is now done: presented in prototype form at the, the road maxi-trail of the Hamamatsu coat of arms is now ready to come up against the competition after a loooooong period of appetizer (read in particular).

A new engine. Well almost…

The heart of the new Japanese maxi-trail is a liquid-cooled twin cylinder set at 90 °: the former owners of V-Strom 1000 will not be disoriented, since it is the same engine base – originally that of the TL1000 -, whose displacement increases from 996 to 1037 cc via an increase in the bore (from 98 to 100 mm).

Suzuki, however, was not content to "inflate" its mechanics: the cylinders, pistons and crankshaft are new, while the six-speed gearbox receives the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS), a device that fills the anti-dribble functions while reducing efforts on the left lever.

Ignition and injection are also getting a makeover with iridium spark plugs much more efficient to ignite the mixture – but also more expensive to replace – and an electronic control unit which goes from 16 to 32 bits. To better measure the changes made, all the parts in yellow on the engine diagram opposite differ from the old version.

To improve vaporization, the injectors go from four to ten holes, while friction has been reduced for better fuel efficiency, improved reliability and lower fuel consumption. Suzuki engine manufacturers thus announce a reduction in gasoline consumption of "16%" compared to the old model: the new DL1000 V-Strom could travel "20.9 km" with a liter of gasoline, ie a consumption 4.78 l / 100 km.

A progression that MNC will not fail to verify during a long-term test in "current" use, especially as the tank capacity is reduced from 22 to 20 liters. Power and torque are naturally revised upwards from 98 to 100.5 hp and from 101 to 103 Nm: relatively modest values compared to "heavy goods vehicles" on the market (125 hp and 125 Nm for the R1200GS, 137 hp and 121 Nm for the Explorer and up to 150 hp and 124.5 Nm for the Ducati Multistrada 1200), but MNC readers – who, as everyone knows, have a little more savvy than others – know that two important aspects must be taken into account before deciding.

The first point lies in the availability of this engine: already not stingy in sensations on the previous version, this revamped twin now reaches its maximum torque at 4000 rpm, against 6400 previously. And more torque available sooner means better pickups and an upgraded engine "trunk".

Lightness and comfort

Second criterion to examine: the weight of the motorcycle. And on this point, the new DL1000 V-Strom 2014 is in the low average with 228 kg in running order announced. It’s about ten kilos lighter than an R1200GS or a Versys 1000, and between 30 and 50 kg less than the !

But apart from the Kawasaki, all the motorcycles listed above are final drive by shaft and cardan shafts: the Suzuki therefore enjoys a logical advantage thanks to its chain. An asset that is nevertheless unacceptable for some bikers, for whom the constraints (lubrication, tension and projections, in particular) make it an incompatible solution on a motorcycle designed to ride far and for a long time..

To contain its line, the 2014 V-Strom abandons the dual-outlet silencer (a weight gain of 4.7 kg according to Suzuki) while the improvement of the cooling system has not only made it possible to lighten the whole, but also to do without the oil cooler present on the old version. Suzuki estimated gain: 2.5 kg.

Its chassis made up of two aluminum beams connected to a tubular rear loop would be "13%" lighter. This frame is connected to peripherals much sharper than before: the inverted fork is fully adjustable (only preloaded before), the brake calipers – now radial and monobloc – accommodate two additional pistons, and the aluminum swingarm is more long to improve motor skills.

The ten-spoke wheels receive Bridgestone BW501 and BW502 with narrow dimensions: 110/80/19 at the front and 150/70/17 at the rear. A guarantee of maneuverability for this bike whose caster angle closes by one degree (25.30 °) compared to the previous one.

The dynamic behavior would therefore have significantly improved, but also the comfort and the practical aspects: the driving position, for example, would be more relaxed thanks to the use of a handlebars located 34.2 mm further back than before..

The passenger footrests are lowered and advanced for the same purpose. Regarding the accessibility of the motorcycle, it will be necessary to wait a little longer since the seat height is not communicated, nor its possibilities – or not – of adjustments..

Under the instrumentation which is a priori clear, practical (controls in the left hand) and extremely rich (see our technical sheet below) is a 12V socket. The windshield can be tilted by hand to three positions and its height can increase by 15 or 30 mm … provided you stop and take out the appropriate tool: damage !

Finally, the new DL1000 V-Strom 2014 can naturally receive luggage designed specifically for it: a 35-liter top-case (capable of accommodating "a full-face helmet", Suzuki assures us) and suitcases of 26 (right) and 29 (left) liters are provided for in the options catalog listed at the bottom of our technical sheet. A list where we deplore the presence of a central stand, unfortunately sold as an option…

The most sophisticated Suzuki !

As announced last year, the Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom 2014 has a lightweight Bosch ABS (1050 g) but not disconnectable, as well as a new traction control configurable in two positions and disengageable. This is the first time that a production Suzuki motorcycle has received this type of technology !

However, Hamamatsu’s maxi-trail does not become a geek’s bike, especially in view of what tends to become widespread in its category: ride-by-wire accelerator, adjustable maps, adjustable ABS and equipped with a off-road function, electronically adjustable suspensions, cruise control, etc..

But who says excessive sophistication says exploding price: the Suzuki may not be the most impressive on the market when it comes to electronic aids or even pure power, but its price could well make everyone agree….

“The price range of the DL1000 V-Strom 2014 would be between 12,000 and 13,000 € incl. Tax,” Suzuki France told us. Even if it remains to be confirmed, this amount could reconcile the category of maxi-trails with bikers who do not want – or cannot – slam 15,000 euros !

It remains to compose with its lines often considered "particular",. In the list of the highly discussed visual points appear the famous "duckbill" derived from the DR750S of 1988, the muffler silencer or the superimposed optics like GSX-R…

According to our information collected from the French subsidiary, the DL1000 V-Strom will be available in dealerships "at the end of the year" in Candy Daring Red (red), Glass Glacier White (white), Glass Sparkle Black (black) and Glass Desert Kahki (beige).
