KTM 2-stroke enduro motorcycles switch to injection in 2018
KTM is about to embark on a real revolution with its new 250 and 300 EXC TPI 2018, the first enduro motorcycles with a 2-stroke engine powered by injection. The arrival of these injected 2T single cylinders capable of meeting Euro4 standards is scheduled for early summer 2017.
"KTM is pleased to announce a major milestone in its development by unveiling the world’s first serial production of 2-stroke enduro injection machines," said the Austrian manufacturer, the first to produce injected enduro motorcycles with engines 2-stroke. The Orange brand precedes Sherco, Beta, TM or even Gas Gas, which are also working on this technology.
The first two motorcycles concerned are the enduro 250 and 300 EXC vintages 2018, which adopt the suffix TPI for "Transfer Port Injection". Developed for a long time, this technology has many advantages, such as being able to do without the starter and the traditional gasoline-oil mixture. Thanks to the precision of the injection, an injected 2-stroke engine is also more fuel-efficient and less polluting, two imperative criteria in the context of Euro4 standards..
Finally, an injection 2-stroke has better operating regularity, whatever the weather and altitude conditions (a classic 2-stroke is sensitive to variations in atmospheric pressure). But will the responsiveness and character of a carburettor-powered single cylinder – like that of the 2017 300 EXC above – be preserved on these new injected versions? KTM seems pretty confident.
"The new 2-stroke TPI models offer a whole new experience in terms of power and handling", assures the brand of Mattighofen, without however revealing more details on the characteristics and the functioning of its injection device for 2-stroke engines.
The official launch of these KTM 250 and 300 EXC TPI is scheduled for May 2017 and the arrival at them will begin "at the beginning of summer 2017", predicts the Austrian manufacturer, which also remains discreet about the prices of these revolutionary novelties.
Knowing that the current 250 and 300 EXC 2-stroke 2016 are trading at € 8,455 and € 8,655 respectively, everything suggests that the TPI injected versions will exceed € 9,000. Another unanswered question: when will this technology be extended to KTM cross bikes, 125 and 250 SX? ?
