The rich French know-how

Rather than giving up after the unprocessed launch in 1999 of their first motorcycle, the brothers Olivier and François Midy took the time to reflect on a new, even more ambitious project….

For 15 years, this artisanal brand installed in Angers (49) will shape by hand a second motorcycle, .

But this time a new strategy has been defined to ensure its sustainability: to offer an unparalleled level of finish and customization to stand out technically, but also commercially..

In this way, Midual intends to capitalize on the notoriety and attractiveness of luxury crafts "made in France".

The initiative attracts private investors ("around forty", assures Midual) and receives support from the Pays-de-la-Loire region, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Maine-et-Loire , the technopole of the city of Angers and even the School of Arts and Crafts, which provides its premises. Europe is also adding its stone to the building through its European Economic and Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

As on the late Midual 900, the Type 1 immediately stands out for its engine: an original flat twin installed facing the road. To contain the wheelbase, the main constraint induced by this type of engine used on the Douglas motorcycle from 1927, this 1036 cc unit is tilted at 25 ° on the front.. 

The center distance between the two 17-inch rims is in this way contained at 1505 mm, a value admittedly quite large but nevertheless very close to the wheelbase of roadsters in this category (1490 mm for the, for example).

Advertised for 106 hp at 8000 rpm and 100 Nm of torque at 5300 rpm, this 180 ° engine is equipped with a refined distribution by cascade of pinions, responsible for operating a double overhead camshaft. It takes place in a superb monocoque-type frame designed by Olivier Midy. 

The custom-made motorcycle

Entirely handcrafted in an aluminum alloy cast in a "French aeronautical foundry", this chassis addresses an irreproachable quality of realization, while its waterproof double wall also acts as a fuel tank (14 liters). Beautiful chassis, MNC has already seen … but that of the Type 1 is to be erected as a work of art (see the photo gallery under the technical sheet below) !

End of the day, the lucky future owner can opt for a brushed, corked or satin polished finish. Because the Type 1 wants to be as exceptionally refined as it is highly customizable: the bike is almost entirely customizable, according to the instructions defined when ordering.. 

Thus, the dashboard with seven analog dials (including a rev counter in the central position) can receive different treatments aimed at highlighting its polished Australian oak coating, while more than 45 hand-sewn leathers are available. available to personalize the knee grip and upholstery in particular.

This premium treatment extends to many other parts, such as aluminum stems, side plates cut in the mass or even the brake fluid reservoir engraved and polished. The rest of the peripherals are in keeping with it since we find in particular an inverted Ohlins FGRT fork of 43 mm and a TTX36 mono-shock from the same supplier. Admire in passing how the aluminum of the rear hull reflects the separate cylinder and the hydraulic adjustments of this element derived from the competition in the photo below.

On the braking side, Midual trusts the Italian specialist Brembo to stop the 239 kg all full made of the Type 1. The 320 mm front discs are clamped by 4-piston radial calipers, while the 245 mm rear disc receives an element. with 2 pistons. An assembly a priori above all suspicion, although we deplore the absence of an ABS device on such a high-end motorcycle.

Especially when you consider its truly exorbitant price of 140,000 euros! That is the cost of two, the most efficient and exclusive Superbike created by Ducati (65,000 €) and one combined! It’s also € 40,000 more than the ultra-exclusive, the sports car launched in very small series by MVAgusta in homage to Claudio Castiglioni … or the equivalent of 23 (yes, twenty-three!) ! 

French Avinton motorcycles seem accessible with their price list ranging from 33,000 to 80,000 euros ! 

Midual plans to start marketing in Europe from 2016 with 35 copies on which a plate will indicate their date of construction, their number and the name of their owner..

At high-end price, high-end treatment: the Angevin manufacturer announces that each model will be delivered "directly to its owner by a technician" and will benefit, in Europe, from an exclusive service "of four years of maintenance and warranty. ".

As this particularly careful maintenance is scheduled at the factory, the removal and return of the motorcycle will be provided by Midual. Class !
