Motorcycle news 2013: presentation of the BMW F 700 GS and F 800 GS

F700 GS / F800 GS: more punch, more equipment, more options !
Despite their different names, the F650 GS and F800 GS share the same engine: a parallel twin of 798 cc (read our). This questionable marketing choice – because unflattering for the owners of the "small" -, BMW draws a line from above for 2013: the F650 GS becomes F700 GS and gains in the way a handful of horses and newton-meters of torque.
Still modeled on that of the F800GS (but also that of the F800R and F800ST), the water-cooled eight-valve twin of the "new" F700 GS goes from 71 hp to 75 hp and from 75 Nm to 77 Nm of couple. In addition, BMW has slightly shortened the chain drive gear ratio for quicker acceleration..
On the F800 GS, the engine does not undergo any modification: the in-line twin engine develops unchanged power of 85 hp at 7,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 83 Nm at 5,750 rpm. On both motorcycles, it is possible to limit the power to 35 kW in accordance with the new European license A2.
The 2013 F700 GS and F800 GS also release new options hitherto used on the big (who said big?) Sister R1200GS. The F700 GS can thus receive anti-slip ASC (Automatic Stability Control) and especially ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), the famous electronic suspension adjustment present on the brand’s large-displacement models..
On the F700 GS and F800 GS, the pilot will have the choice between three different adjustments of the rebound of the rear monoshock: Comfort, Normal and Sport. The preload remains adjustable via a dial whose ergonomics have been "optimized", assures BMW.
Finally, the F700 GS adopts a second brake disc of 300 mm at the front, while the two new features have a disconnectable ABS as standard. The chassis is identical to the previous models: the trellis frame with carrying engine is renewed as it is, just like the aluminum swingarm and the inverted fork on the F800 and conventional (not inverted, what!) On the F700 GS.
Lift without excess
As for the general presentation, the F700 GS and F800 GS are intended to be a little more punchy, thanks in particular to the tighter lines of the side fairings or the smoky gray color of the turn signal cabochons. The "beak" specific to the trail genre has been redesigned for more fluidity and to ensure better protection.
The F700 GS also exhibits a redesigned windshield for more efficiency and new handlebar bridges, visually more qualitative. The two motorcycles adopt a new reservoir of front brake fluid and new stems, the main characteristic of which is the grouping of the indicators on a single control located on the left. "Like a vulgar Japanese", the purists are already offended…
The on-board console also changes: the readability of the superimposed analogue tachometer and tachometer has been improved, while a fuel gauge and an engine temperature indicator are introduced as standard..
Finally, those who were afraid of the seat height of the F800 GS until then will appreciate to learn that an option to lower the bike is now available. Thanks to a touch-up on the suspensions and a lower saddle, the height can be lowered by 60 mm, or 820 mm of saddle height.
The new F700 GS will be available in Gala Red Metallic, Ostra Gray Metallic Matt and Glacier Gray Metallic, while the F800 GS will be available in Kalamata Metallic Matt, Cordoba Blue and Alpine White 3.
BMW Motorrad has not yet communicated the prices of the two trails reviewed and corrected: for the record, the old F650GS and F800GS were displayed from € 8,500 and € 10,370. The date of availability is just as unknown, but the impossibility of configuring "online" on the current small GS suggests that their replacements will not wait until 2013 to land !
Finally, remember that a new more touring version of the F800 ST is also expected for 2013 at the propeller brand (read).
