Multistrada 1200: the dream bike of Ducati
Last night, Ducati lifted the veil on one of the most awaited novelties of the Milan Motor Show: the Multistrada 1200. The Italians have released the big game: with its four driving modes, the new Ducati seems capable of doing everything. Presentation !
Four motorcycles in one ?!
Ducati ensures that with a simple click on the left stalk, the rider ideally configures his motorcycle – engine, suspensions, DTC – according to the planned program: sports, GT, urban or enduro … it’s up to you. !
By engaging the "Sport" mode, the suspensions automatically adopt – on condition that you have opted for the S version of the Multistrada and its Ohlins managed by the DES system – a "resetting" setting. What to benefit from the rear tire 190 mm wide !
At the same time, the pilot takes advantage of the maximum engine performance and the intervention of the DTC is minimized (level 3 out of 8). If necessary, the païlote can disconnect the ABS: the purists of the brand will be happy! Everyone should be satisfied with the adoption of an anti-dribble wet clutch..
According to Ducati, it is in "Touring" mode that the rider benefits the most from the upright riding position, the protection of the fairing, the height-adjustable screen and the heated grips – be careful, this last element is specific to the S Touring !
The 150 horses are always free – except in France … – in order to facilitate the recoveries and overtaking on expressways, but are announced more docile than in Sport mode. We take advantage more than ever of the ABS and the DTC intervenes earlier (level 5), as well as the voluntarily long sixth, in order to reduce the consumption of the Multistrada … and its vibrations. !
The suspensions are also gaining in comfort – and are they really losing in efficiency? – to the delight of the pilot but also of his passenger. The latter takes advantage of handles to hang on and his buttocks remain far from the heat of the pots: a good point compared to previous models of Multi !
In "Urban" mode, the user sees the engine of his Multistrada limited to 100 horsepower. In order to further limit the risk of slipping from the rear, the DTC is set almost to the maximum (level 7). As for the suspensions of the S – those of the standard will require a few keystrokes – they are tarnished electronically in order to absorb at best "all the dangers of the street".
According to Ducati, it is in town that we will appreciate the low center of gravity, the two glove boxes, the two 12 V sockets, the top-case – optional – to store your helmet, the transponder avoiding the use of the key and the turning radius of 38 ° on each side !
To limit projections on the engine on rainy days, the front mudguard can even be fitted with an additional mud flap. An accessory that would also be welcome on the Streetfighter (read our) !
Finally, the "Enduro" mode highlights the presence of an engine spoiler – which will be useful for descending the sidewalks of the urban jungle! -, the excellent fit of Pirelli Scorpion Trail (read our) as well as the limited weight of the beast: 189 kg dry, to which must be added mainly the 20 liters of gasoline which would offer 300 km of autonomy.
Still in this country mode, the preload of the Ohlins suspensions is lowered and the hydraulics released to allow the Ducati to go everywhere – but will customers dare to venture off the roads? – and the engine remains limited to 100 horsepower. Pilotage aids (ABS and DTC) can be deactivated.
We therefore retain that to really take advantage of all the capabilities of the new Multistrada 1200, it will be necessary to purchase the "S Touring" version, displayed at € 18,900. The same amount will have to be paid to acquire the "S Sport", while the Standard version will be exchanged for € 14,900 (+ € 1,000 for ABS).
Color level, the Multistrada 1200 Standard will be offered in Red or Arctic White, the two "S" in Red, Arctic White and Diamond Black. The arrival in Ducati France dealerships is planned in three successive waves: end of March for the S, May for the Standard ABS and June for the Standard without ABS..
