State-of-the-art and equipped as expected with the unique DVT variable valve timing, the Multistrada 1200 version 2015 commands the admiration of all at EICMA in Milan. At the cutting edge of technology and equipped as expected with the unprecedented, the Multistrada 1200 version 2015 commands the admiration of all at the EICMA in Milan. Ducati, on the other hand, runs the risk of "taking the beak" with a number of refractory bikers with its new front face, whose tip forms a hooked nose reminiscent of a raptor…

Variable geometry physics ?

Visually, the 2015 edition of the Multistrada 1200 caused a sensation, sparking passionate debates in the aisles of the EICMA! Seen from the front, the version equipped with the luggage revisited in 2015 also creates a particular optical effect, the rounded ends of the cases being superimposed on those of the front side panels to form a spherical whole (white model on photo below).

The rear appears much more consensual, with a wraparound LED light under the prominent redesigned passenger grips.

In addition to this facelift which will undoubtedly cause a lot of bytes to flow, the new Multistrada 1200 inherits the first two-cylinder with variable distribution signed Ducati, the Desmodromic Variable Timing, a sophisticated solution which intervenes on the lifting and duration of the opening of the valves of ” intake and exhaust to improve efficiency and reduce consumption (read our ).

Thanks to this technology making it possible to modify the valve crossing time (the moment when the 4 valves per cylinder are open simultaneously), the power of the 1,198 cc twin is increased to 160 hp at 9500 rpm and the torque to 136 Nm. at 7,500 rpm, including 80 Nm available from 3,500 rpm. That is a gain of 10 horses and 11.5 Nm compared to the twin-cylinder, also used on the Diavel and the Monster 1200.

Another beneficial aspect: consumption would fall by an average of "8%", while the valve clearance service interval does not suffer from the integration of the DVT and remains fixed at 30,000 km (15,000 km for intermediate revisions). In short, on the enthusiastic paper of the press kit, that’s good !

Improved comfort, ergonomics and electronic aids

True "Italian-Swiss Army Knife", the Multistrada 1200 has since its (reread our) the big difference between the comfort and the upright position of a trail and dynamic sporty behavior specific to Bologna motorcycles.

This new vintage uses the same ingredients but adds a good pinch of comfort thanks in particular to a redesigned saddle, adjustable in height from 825 to 845 mm and closer to the handlebars..

The height of the screen can still be adjusted to 60 mm with one hand, but more fluidly than before while two 12V sockets are within reach of gloves.

In terms of technology, Ducati has poured a generous ladle of electronics on its trail! The new instrument panel (LCD on the standard version, TFT matrix on the S models and, equipped with the Dainese airbag) is even more complete, while its many functions are controlled from the handlebars via new gray buttons..

Thanks to these controls mainly grouped together on the left stalk, it is for example possible to select one of the four driving modes, to activate the new cruise control (standard on all versions), or to set the anti-skating (on eight levels) and wheeling control added in 2015. Pressing it also allows you to navigate certain functions of your smartphone, which can now be connected to the bike via Bluetooth.

In addition, Ducati offers bikers who are a little "geeky" with spines to play with their phone via an Android application that allows them to record their trips and share them on the web. More practical on a daily basis: the Multi starts without having to insert a key, thanks to an electronic key that you just have to carry on your person as on many Harley-Davidson.

The luxurious "S" range model receives as standard the latest generation of Skyhook semi-active suspensions developed with Sachs, capable of adjusting their operation to the profile of the road in real time with more or less responsiveness and firmness depending on the engine mapping engaged.

Thanks to a new inertia measurement unit, the Ducati’s electronic brain is also capable of knowing the position of the motorcycle on each plane (vertical, horizontal and longitudinal), which allows it to refine the intervention of different aids and the behavior of the suspensions taking into account the inclination, roll and pitch of the motorcycle. An ultra-sophisticated module similar to the one used on the "MotoGP-esque" !

One of the most concrete applications of this IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) is measured by the sophisticated Bosch 9.1ME ABS integrated on all models: depending on the information collected by the ECU, this intelligent ABS adapts its action depending on whether the motorcycle is tilted or straight. In other words, the braking power delivered by the Brembo M50 monobloc radial calipers (the same as on the Panigale or the Ninja H2 !!) will be distributed as accurately as possible between the front and rear wheels to avoid "losing the front" in curves, as on the .

The Multistrada S also accommodates adaptive headlights, whose beam automatically follows the movements of the handlebars to illuminate the interior of the bends and not the embankment in the winding. Until now, only the luxurious ones had this type of lighting really impressive in terms of efficiency and safety..

+ 8 kg and + 500 euros: the Multi 2015 sends heavy !

Ducati announces a full weight of 232 kg for the standard Multistrada 1200 (+3 kg for the S model), an increase of no less than 8 kg compared to the slim 2014 vintage. The price unfortunately follows the same trend with a grid price starting at € 17,590 (+500 euros) and reaching € 21,169 for the fully equipped S version.

Like the one on which Ducati is eyeing even more openly with this new vintage, the 2015 Multistrada can receive four different option packs (Touring, Sport, Urban and Enduro) which include in particular the suitcases, the top case, the heated grips, a silencer. Termignoni, various protections and casing in carbon or brushed aluminum.
