BMW unveils this morning at the Cologne Intermot Show the new 2013 R 1200 GS, eagerly awaited by bikers around the world and especially in France. On the program: mixed air / liquid cooling and several technological innovations.

The highlights of the new BMW R 1200 GS

  • Fully redesigned mechanical package for maximum dynamism in the travel trail segment.
  • Displacement 1170 cm3, rated power 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,700 rpm, maximum torque 125 Nm at 6,500 rpm.
  • Vertical passage of gases in the cylinder heads to increase efficiency and performance.
  • Compact air / water cooling system for optimum heat balance.
  • Engine block with a compact and light crankshaft, but nevertheless with optimized rigidity.
  • Carter divided according to the vertical plane of the open deck type (open tablature).
  • Six-speed gearbox integrated in the crankcase with clutch in oil bath and anti-dribble function requiring less actuating force.
  • New intake line with 52-millimeter diameter throttle bodies for optimum power and torque characteristic curves.
  • Electronic throttle grip for an even easier to drive and smoother engine and for the realization of new special functions.
  • Innovative exhaust line with a controlled exhaust flap for optimum power characteristic and a hoarse sound from the flat twin.
  • Freely selectable “Rain”, “Road”, “Dynamic”, “Enduro” and “Enduro Pro” riding modes, with three different laws for the electronic throttle grip, in conjunction with ASC (Automatic Stability Control) , ABS and ASC settings specific for off-road use and dynamic ESA settings (ex-factory option) adapted to each mode.
  • New chassis with a perimeter frame in torsionally rigid steel tubes and bolted rear frame.

  • Newly designed optimized telelever at the front and Paralever EVO at the rear for even more precise road feel.

  • Wheel / tire dimensions 120/70 R19 front and 170/60 R17 rear, specially adapted for the R 1200 GS, a world premiere.
  • BMW Motorrad brake system comprising Brembo monobloc calipers in radial arrangement at the front and a two-piston floating caliper clamping a larger disc (Ø 276 mm compared to 265 mm previously) at the rear.
  • BMW Motorrad full ABS as standard.
  • Semi-active dynamic ESA suspension (ex-works option).
  • More efficient main headlight, with LED daytime running light (ex-factory option).
  • World’s first LED motorcycle main headlight with integrated daytime running light (ex-factory option).
  • New on-board network with new partitioning of functions.
  • Extended electric controls.
  • Electronic speed regulator (factory option).
  • Pre-fitting for the navigation system with multi-controller for controlling the BMW Motorrad Navigator IV (ex-works option).
  • Windscreen adjustable with one hand for optimum protection against wind and weather.
  • Saddle can be adjusted in several positions for perfect ergonomics.
  • Easy to remove license plate holder for off-road trips.
  • Increased ground clearance (+ 8 mm)
  • New instrument cluster with on-board computer as standard. Pro on-board computer available as an option.
  • Four main colors: Alpine White, Racing Red, Flame Blue and Metallic Thundergrey.
