Triumph factory preparations: Bobber or Scrambler ?
Triumph took advantage of the EICMA to unveil two “homemade” preparations, made on the basis of Bonneville. A competition between these two motorcycles on the web and the winner will be designated at the Birmingham show. So, rather Bobber or Scrambler ?
Preparation: the Scrambler according to Hinckley
And here is what Triumph can say about its preparation…
Going hand in hand with the growing craze for customizing motorcycles, Scrambler-style preparations are multiplying all over the world. The original Scramblers were the powerful and aggressive off-road version of a road bike. Desert Sleds, Flat Trackers and other Scramblers have all helped define the DNA of a true Scrambler. And it is this code that the TFC2 team resolutely followed. Their interpretation of the Scrambler would be the modern expression of the desire for performance, handling and off-road capability: THE Scrambler.
Barely out of the box and even before the Bonneville they had been entrusted with reached their workshop, the team members already had in mind the spirit of their achievement, based essentially on weight reduction and development. of power. This approach had to match the geometry and suspension travel of a modern competition motocross, so as to obtain an agile chassis, perfectly adapted to the power gain. The first working angle was the existing steel frame, sacrificed in favor of a custom-made aluminum and titanium frame, presenting an aggressive geometry and a determined profile. The aluminum frame also makes it possible to hide components such as the mechanism and the throttle control cables. Associated with the aluminum frame, the sublime titanium rear subframe was welded by hand by the team before receiving a shot-peened finish and masking of the welds.
The finish of the splendid bare chassis is one of the few points that does not strictly obey the obsessive principle of the hunt for extra pounds. The Speed Triple’s reworked swingarm is heavier than a conventional block, but it’s been inverted and finished to perfection, adding a stunning new detail and a hallmark of Triumph identity. The integration of this swingarm therefore required the use of a mono-shock absorber, bringing the bike even closer to its modern motocross inspiration. To this end, the collaboration with Nitron Racing Systems made it possible to realize a rear shock absorber tuned to perfection, as well as a custom fork..
At the very beginning of the project, the team had considered using a carbon fuel tank, but they were not really convinced that the idea was feasible. The team therefore called on the company Ace Fiberglass Ltd to produce a fully carbon tank, as well as fairing elements and the battery support. The weight of the tank is one third of the original one, perfectly sticking to the basic principle of the team, the saving of weight and power.
The Scrambler having now undergone a drastic regime compared to the original model, the team then focused on its second objective, the increase in power. The cylinder head was rebored before receiving large valves and butterfly bodies from the Daytona, as well as a set of modified aluminum intake trumpets. To get even more power from their modified twin, the team made a unique set of camshafts, whose profile is borrowed from the Daytona. All the modifications made to the engine are supposed to produce a power gain of 25%, enough to seriously invigorate the bike and perfectly match the capabilities of the new chassis..
In order to be able to ride off the beaten track, the Scrambler is fitted with 17-inch Kineo wheels with 180 tires at the rear and 130 at the front. Why 17 inches at the front? In fact, the front team considered putting on a pair of awful grip slick tires, and giving this ultimate Scrambler a Supermoto style … a pretty good idea otherwise..
