While it was still criticized at the last Cologne and Milan 2012 shows for not sufficiently renewing its range, Yamaha has just created a surprise by announcing the birth, from next month, of a new member of the scooter family " Max ".

Xmax 400: availability, colors and price

  • Availability: May 2013 in the
  • Colors: White "Absolute", Gray "Matt" or Black "Midnight"
  • Price: € 5,999 (ABS to come, end of 2013)

We no longer present – especially to French "scootomobilists"! – the Xmax 125, best selling motorcycle in France, nor its version "for motorcyclists", the .

There is also no need to recall the characteristics that make the success of their big brother, the, best seller in France! In order to further humiliate its competitors by supporting its three bestsellers, the French number one has therefore decided to launch a brand new Xmax … 400 !

In presenting its “new engine” 395 cc, 4-stroke, four-valve, dual overhead camshaft, single-cylinder, Yamaha admits, however, that it is not completely new. It is in fact "an evolution of the reliable and proven concept which powers the famous Majesty 400".

Curiously, the version mounted on the new sporty Yamaha maxiscoot ‘turns out to be a little less efficient than that fitted to its majestic elder: the tuning forks brand announces for the Xmax 400 a maximum power and torque of 31.5 hp and 33, 88 Nm, against 34 hp and 36.3 Nm for the Majesty 400…

Clever, the manufacturer compares the values of his last born with those of the Xmax 250! As a result, the Xmax 400 claims 54% more power than its "little brother" and 60% more torque, for a greater weight of 31 kg (+ 17% according to Site experts).

It must be recognized, however, that the two 400 cc do not really play in the same court and do not target the same customers. "One of the key points that identifies this new scooter to the Max family and gives the new Xmax such personality is the shape of its fairing, which incorporates boomerang-shaped side panels".

Mimicking an aluminum perimeter frame – but it is not, the frame is tubular in steel – these panels give a sporty note that the Majesty does not have … "Which was lacking in the Majesty", will undoubtedly notice the many Tmax fans.

The new Xmax also copies the driving position of its brothers, with its analogue meters and the digital screen of its on-board computer, all housed in a driving position whose "shape, finish and texture of materials are equivalent to what we find in a luxury sedan ", guarantee the Blues.

First on a Yamaha scooter: the double headlight optics are highlighted by LED position lights. The famous light emitting diodes are also used at the rear of the machine, increasing "the driver’s visibility to other road users".

More compact than the Tmax – especially in appearance, because the dimensions are comparable – the Xmax 400 plays the card of the intermediate model, the one that uniquely combines the advantages of large, powerful and stable cubes, and those of the smallest displacements, agile and easy.

"Our engineers have created the most compact and lightest chassis in its class," says the Iwata firm. The motorcycle-type telescopic fork, along with the two floating front discs, light alloy wheels (15 inches at the front and 13 inches at the rear) and wide tires (120 and 150 mm) were developed for provide good stability at high speed ".

Still according to Yamaha, the Xmax 400 is "designed to appeal to city dwellers" looking for a maxiscooter at ease both in the city center and on the highway, capable of taking its user to work on weekdays and to allow him getaways as a duo on weekends.

Because under its particularly dynamic airs, the new Yam ‘does not forget the basics of the scooter: to be practical: "a large storage space under the saddle capable of accommodating two full-face helmets", ensures Yamaha. The Tmax is beaten !

There is also another important point on which the reference of Yamaha must be inclined: the price! Displayed at € 5,999 in the, the Xmax 400 is almost half the price of the Tmax 530 which costs € 10,699 in its basic version and 500 euros more with ABS.

"The new Xmax 400 will be available from May 2013 and a version equipped with ABS will follow later in the year", also specifies Yamaha which has entrusted the manufacture of this new model to its (02).

It is therefore no surprise this time that MBK warns us, in the process, that a new 400 cc scooter will make its entry into its very young range of maxiscooters….
