Yamaha unveils its new 2008 models
A new R6 to give Ten Kate a hard time, a new Tenere 660 to storm the desert, a YBR 125 Custom to stroll around town, a YZF-R 125 to imitate Valentino: 2008 Yamaha s novelties address to everyone !
The Paris Motor Show is fast approaching (read) and manufacturers are gradually revealing their secrets on their next range (read) !
However, it is today that Yamaha has decided to break the silence: the tuning fork brand therefore presents its new YZF-R6 – we keep the biannual rhythm of hyper sporty models! – but also the XT660 Z Tenere, the YBR 125 Custom and the latest YZF-R125 !
Beat the Honda Ten Kate !
"The 2008 Yamaha R6 is ready to defend its title as the most impressive, aggressive and advanced machine in the 600 class", assures its designer, well aware that the world title – the only one, the true one – eludes him since 2001.
Next year, Broc Parkes and Fabien Foret will take advantage of the latest evolution of the Yamaha YZF-R6 and try to interrupt the winning streak of the CBR600RR: five world titles accumulated thanks to Ten Kate since 2003 !
Because there is no doubt that now, Supersport models are above all created for Mondial Supersport pilots. Then free to the lambda biker to adapt to it on the road, if he really wishes !
In appearance, the new R6 remains very close to the old model (read). By dwelling a little on the novelty, however, we notice a larger air intake, smoothed fairing sides and a slightly modified seat backrest…
But on the 2008 R6, the most important changes are not visible from the outside. Thus, it is by boning it that we discover the installation of the YCC-I (Yamaha Chip-Controlled Intake) variable intake system inaugurated last year on the YZF-R1..
As a reminder, "The YCC-I uses four lightweight plastic resin intake vents, which are divided into an upper section and a lower section forming a single unit under normal conditions. But when the electronic unit detects an engine speed greater than a given threshold and the opening of the throttle valve exceeds a certain level, the parts of the cones dissociate: the lower section, shorter, then plays only the role of tubing d ‘admission while the upper section, longer, does not intervene", describes the manufacturer, ensuring a gain in torque and power at all speeds !
Thus, the electronic control of the YCC-T throttle opening and the injection had to be reworked, especially since the new R6 benefits from new pistons "which allow a compression ratio of 13.1 to 1 (…), the highest ever adopted on a production Yamaha ", boastful Yam !
The variable intake system of the 2007 R1
As a result, the connecting rod bearings have been enlarged, the lubrication hole in the main bearings has been revised, the springs of the intake and exhaust valves are "made from a more durable alloy", the diameter of the middle silencer – located between the second and third cylinder exhaust pipes – has been enlarged by 30%" in order to further improve the torque characteristics at high speed", the chain tensioner received a new treatment with palladium carbide and the air box was redesigned.
In the end, the new version of the 599cc 4-cylinder engine develops 135 horsepower at 14,500 rpm for a maximum torque of 69.1Nm reached 3,500 rpm lower … Let’s hope that the mid-revs are still full !
And the cycle part has also undergone a makeover! If the engineers have changed "by keys"the thickness of the walls of the side beams, they did not hesitate to remove the cross member that connected them – an ablation already carried out on the 2007 R1 -…
Up front, the 41mm inverted fork has received new sliders "on which the rigidity was also differently distributed", and at the rear, the swing arm has been tweaked by"the addition of ribs on the inside of the cast rear part, while the aluminum is no longer extruded but forged on the end sections".
Finally, the rear frame buckle is now made of magnesium alloy – "a first for this piece on a Yamaha", adds the manufacturer – the front discs go from 4.5mm to 5mm wide and the rear shock absorber support is lightened.
135 horses for 166 kg
On the scale, the new R6 has a dry weight of 166 kg. For comparison, the CBR600RR is 155kg, the GSX-R600 161kg and the ZX-6R 167kg. Very innocuous differences since the weights of the pilots vary more…
This should make the R6 even more efficient than before … As long as the pilot keeps pace! Its position has also been rethought: "the reference position of the hip moves forward by 5 mm, just like the handlebars which lower by 5 mm (…), the R6 rider is more integrated with the front of the machine and perceives the surface with more finesse ", predicts Yamaha … while the biker can already plan physiotherapy sessions !
Available in Yamaha Blue, Competition White and Graphic, the new R6 has all the assets to dominate the track … But will it adapt to the road ?
The return of the Tenere
In 2008, Yamaha will launch its brand new XT660Z Tenere! Taking up the Minarelli 660cc single cylinder that already drives the XT660R and XT660X (read), and the swingarm of the latest version of the Supermotard, Yamaha is embarking on the Tenere in a nevertheless daring bet.
Darlings of French bikers at the end of the 1980s, the Tenere – and its competitors Africa Twin – gradually disappeared from the catalog in favor of increasingly sporty roadsters, much more fashionable here….
Regardless, to set off on an adventure, the new Tenere puts on real touring tires – sculpted and thin -, climbs on high-travel suspensions (210 mm at the front and 200 at the rear) and cultivates a authentic "Paris-Dakar" look, particularly pronounced in its Desert Khaki colorway.
In addition, its double optic and its vertical windshield give the Tenere an air of a cricket "on the lookout", ready to leap off the beaten track, which will greatly appeal to rally-raid enthusiasts. But are there any left in France? Site market reports will need to be monitored !
The rebirth of the custom 125 ?
Finally, Yamaha will consolidate its presence in the 125cc market with two new models that oppose everything: the YBR 125 Custom and the YZF-R125 !
Second best-selling 125cc in France behind the Xmax last year (read), the YBR is much less successful this year and has restored the Honda Varadero to its bestseller status in terms of 125 motorcycles (read).
But Yam has not said his last word and will offer next year a variation of his economy-utility: the YBR 125 Custom !
On the program: a new tank with resolutely "custom" lines, a new two-seater seat lowered by 20mm (760mm in height on the Custom therefore), raised handlebars, 9-spoke alloy rims and an inevitable chrome finish.
All we can imagine, at a very tight price … Like the Tenere for trails – the "real" ones -, will the YBR 125 Custom be able to revive the attraction of the French for the Custom 125, like the Honda Shadow did 20 years ago? Answer in a few months…
Between the CBR125R and the RS125…
The 125 sports sector, monopolized until now by the Honda CBR125R, also sees the arrival of a brand new Yamaha: the YZF-R125 !
Powered by a 4-stroke liquid-cooled 4-valve single cylinder "new for the brand", the little sportswoman benefits from an injection system powered by an air box. The cap of 15 legal horses – yes the 125 also are restricted (read) -, should therefore be reached but the performances should remain lower than those of a 2-stroke.
Nevertheless, the manufacturer promises the pilot "top-notch performance":"With a bore-stroke of 52 mm x 58.6 mm, this compact engine gives it very lively acceleration. Thanks to this architecture – combined with the dynamic qualities of the 4-valve cylinder head, fuel injection and efficient exhaust – the R125 displays excellent performance in the 125 4-stroke category.", says Yam.
Will the racing beast make it possible to overtake a truck on a national road in complete safety? To check ! Cycle part level on the other hand, we can already predict a healthy or even playful behavior…
Its oversized steel Deltabox frame should handle acceleration, angle changes and braking smoothly – 292 mm disc pinched by a double piston caliper at the front and 230 mm at the rear – whether on the road or on the road. on track. Suspended on a 33 mm diameter fork and an aluminum swingarm, the YZF-R125 should even offer "stable and lively handling at the same time", says Yamaha.
On the look side, the "reciiing" spirit is omnipresent on the R125, very close to its big sister R6 but also to the MotoGP M1: short silencer opening under the right footrest, minimalist seat backrest, "cut to size" tank. bill hook "and handlebars at the same level as the saddle … Even holders of the B license can take themselves for Valentino Rossi !
It remains to know the price of this little sportswoman, who will do a lot for her commercial success! Listed at € 2,999, the Honda CBR125R swept the Aprilia or Cagiva twice as expensive. What about a slightly more expensive R125, or even less expensive at the time of promotions? ?…
New T-Max 2008
Yamaha also reports the evolution of its T-Max for 2008. The "scooter that scares motorcycles" (read) is thus equipped with a new aluminum frame, suspension settings "optimized"- for driving"sublimated", ensures the manufacturer! – and a 15-inch wheel at the front (against 14 at the front and 15 at the rear previously). The diameter of the fork tubes has been increased from 41 mm to 43 mm and the overall weight of the machine is reduced by 5 kg … More info soon !
See you at the Mondial du deux-Roues in Paris Porte de Versailles to closely contemplate these new 2008 products (read). And if you can’t make the trip, the new Yamaha will be visible on Site … Stay tuned !
