Contrary to what might have been hoped, neither the Yamaha YZF-R1, nor the YZF-R6 should experience any technical or aesthetic changes in 2014. The brand with three tuning forks would hand over the segment of sports motorcycles … Or was she preparing on the contrary to create the event by using sound? MNC takes stock !

No changes on the 2014 R1 and R6

Except surprise, the two sports bikes from Yamaha will not experience any changes in 2014: Yamaha USA has just unveiled the 2014 vintages of the R1 and the R6, and apart from the colors, the Superbike and the Supersport are strictly identical to the current models..

The good news is that motorcycle prices do not change either – at least in the United States: the R1 2014 is displayed at the same price as in 2013 (from $ 14,290), while that the R6 remains accessible from $ 10,990.

The only visible differences come from the decorations, which adopt some small nuances of color and graphics..

Under these conditions, it is not surprising that these motorcycles are very quickly available: the "new" R1 is announced for "September" in American dealerships and the "new" R6 between "September and October". Be careful, however: the colors shown in the photos opposite are those of the American market, the color chart chosen by European importers may be different..

The development version of the surprise YZF-R1 will therefore not be unveiled this fall, at the Motorcycle Show in Milan or Paris..

Concerning it, this lack of developments is not really prohibitive: the current YRF-R1 is a very efficient sports bike, which was positively updated in 2012 thanks to the transplant of a traction control in particular (read our).

On the other hand, the R6 has not undergone a major overhaul for some time: apart from an exhaust and an injection map retouched in 2010, the demanding Japanese supersport has generally remained in the same juice since its major overhaul 2006 (read in particular our).

The three-cylinder alternative ?

It is a sad reality: the category of sports motorcycles is in decline commercially, and this is reflected in the rate of evolution of models. Nevertheless, beyond this general observation, it is possible that Yamaha will temporarily place its two 4-cylinder sports cars "on standby" in order to concentrate its resources – technical and financial – on another major project: the development of a sporty 3-cylinder offer…

From there, the new three-cylinder Yamaha tested and approved by MNC on the, the manufacturer had indeed indicated that this engine would serve as a common basis for several types of motorcycles..

Logically in view of market statistics, the first machine to have taken advantage of it is a roadster, the, while an upcoming trail-road type version seems fairly consistent commercially speaking: this would constitute an excellent replacement for the aging – but very popular – 900 TDM (read in particular).

A third type of motorcycle could also serve as an excellent showcase for the new Yamaha 847 cc 3-cylinder: a sporty one! Without going so far as to hunt on the tracks of or even of, Yamaha could enrich its offer with a powerful and fun motorcycle, without necessarily being extreme. After all, the R1 and R6 are already good enough and are perfect for the most seasoned of trackers. !

Not to mention that they are excellent supports in competition: fast, reliable and efficient, the current R1 and R6 win races almost every weekend, which will not necessarily be the case for a brand new motorcycle equipped with a 3-legged. The Japanese manufacturer could therefore choose the path of "sport-road", a segment left abandoned in the range since the shutdown of the TRX850 … To be continued on MNC: stay tuned !
