New in 2016: Ducati comes out of the asphalt with the Multistrada 1200 Enduro

Ducati offers its sporty maxi-trail in a more adventurous Enduro version with off-road accents, notably with a 30-liter tank (+10 liters!), Suspension travel from 170 to 200 mm and a unique double swingarm.
Ducati switches to Enduro !
Until now only turned towards bitumen use with its 17-inch stick rims (read our), Ducati’s sporty maxi-trail places a wheel in the earth with this new Multistrada 1200 Enduro version. Spoked wheels shod in Pirelli Scorpion Trail II (Scorpion Rally with wide lugs as an option) appear in more typical off-road dimensions, 19 inches at the front and 17 at the rear.
Its tank surrounded by chrome covers takes – a lot – in volume and goes from 20 to 30 liters, like that of its direct competitors and .
This increase leads to a significant widening of its fairing sides, now more "chubby". The lighting is entirely LED and the digital instrumentation.
The characteristic "beak" of Multistrada is lengthened to accentuate the trail side of the bike. In addition, the mudguards are redesigned for better protection while a center stand is fitted as standard. Good news insofar as the final transmission is always done by chain! Note that the elegant single-arm is replaced by a two-post element, retained to reduce the weight and its ability to "better absorb shocks off-road".
The handlebars are fixed higher and the saddle – not adjustable – is raised to reach 870 mm (low or high saddle at 850 mm or 890 mm optional). Bye, bye the appreciable accessibility of the standard Multistrada 1200 and its saddle, the height of which can vary from 825 to 845 mm! The windshield can always be adjusted in height by 60 mm without tools. Two 12V sockets are also available, just to recharge your GPS safely in the middle of the dunes…
160 hp twin cylinder and state-of-the-art electronics
On the engine side, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is powered by the 1,198 cc twin-spark twin-cylinder (two spark plugs per cylinder) common to the rest of the range, with the DVT variable timing system discovered last year. Advertised for 160 hp and 136 Nm of torque, this sports unit to Euro4 standards would develop "100 Nm from 3500 rpm". No risk of getting "stuck" down a muddy hill due to lack of power !
The exhaust is redesigned to facilitate the installation of the optional aluminum cases developed with Touratech, colloquially nicknamed "coolers" by the regulars because of their rectangular format. On a motorcycle whose price starts at € 21,590, we regret that they are not included in the standard endowment.
The tubular steel trellis frame underwent some alterations, in particular at the level of certain dimensions which evolve slightly upwards: the wheelbase goes from 1529 mm to 1566 mm and the caster opens by one degree (24 ° against 25). Changes no doubt made necessary to reinforce stability.
As always at Ducati, electronics reign supreme with in particular Sachs semi-active suspensions adjustable from the handlebars and whose action then evolves in real time, a Bosch inertial unit capable of measuring the position of the motorcycle on three axes or again an ABS informed by the inclination sensor to adapt its action on the Brembo radial calipers in curves !
The Multistrada 1200 S Pikes Peak and D-Air 2016 |
Ducati is taking advantage of this 2016 vintage to generalize the DVT variable-distribution engine throughout its Multistrada range. By the way, they also receive the modifications required by Euro4 standards, in particular at the level of the exhaust and the grafting of orange reflectors on the fork sleeves.. This update concerns the D-Air version – configured to work with the electronic Dainese airbag – and the sporty Pikes Peak edition, recognizable among other things by its Ohlins suspensions and its specific livery celebrating Ducati’s success on the famous american hellish rise. Unsurprisingly, these changes are also felt on the price: the Multistrada 1200 S D-Air "inflates" to € 20,890 and the Pikes Peak "climbs" to € 24,290. |
As on the other versions of Multistrada 1200, this Enduro also carries a configurable traction control and an anti-wheeling, whose action is correlated to the different driving modes..
For the first time on a Ducati motorcycle, hill start assistance "Ducati Hold Control" is introduced, as on the new .
Finally, the ground clearance rises by 31 mm thanks to the increase in suspension travel, reaching a peak of 205 mm: sufficient to avoid scratching the reassuring openwork metal belly pan at all times. On the other hand, the significant weight gain is less with the off-road claims displayed: from 232 kg on the standard version, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro goes to 254 kg.
