Jorge Lorenzo hit hard on the last day of testing at Sepang, the first session of: timed in, the three-time MotoGP world champion fell 2 tenths below the official record for Pedrosa ()! "Jorgeuil" even surpasses the "unofficial" record signed by Marquez during the 2015 winter testing (1’58.867).

Suffice to say that when leaving Malaysia, the Ducati team was smiling from ear to ear! After such a brilliant achievement, logic would want Lorenzo to also show some relief: remember that his first season at Ducati ended in one, with three podiums but no victory. What to give rise to certain doubts…

"It was a good turn, we can’t say otherwise"

In short, far from being ecstatic at his record time, the n ° 99 believes he has not expressed his full potential: "it was not the perfect lap, because we had to test certain things at the very beginning of the day, when the track was cooler ".

"When I got my time after an hour and a half, the temperatures were already quite high, so the grip was not as good. But it was a good lap, we can’t say the opposite," he admits. . with this touch of – false – modesty which makes all the salt of its communication !

His opponents will appreciate this analysis all the more since none has managed to reach him under the psychological bar of 1’59 … From there to say that Lorenzo adds a little, there is only one step … that only his race results this year will allow – or not – to overcome !

"We were able to set this time because we have a good bike and that is what matters most," judiciously explains the Iberian rider, who won no less than 9 tenths between the first and the last day. "I find that we have made progress on many points: as explained on the first day, I feel better on this bike which suits my riding style better, which allows me to take better advantage of my strengths".

"We are only at the start and we can still improve," said Lorenzo who is decidedly very optimistic for the season ahead. "That being said, for a start, this final first place is not so bad (no kidding, Editor’s note ?!) … During this test, we were always among the first and we had a good pace!" 

Still, if Jorge Lorenzo overplayed a little on the occasion of this return to the forefront, seeing him at the top of the timesheets provides as much pleasure as admiration: the pugnacious Mallorcan is one of the few drivers to finally be managed to reverse the trend on the Ducati. And if its speed is confirmed over time, it will be very promising for the 2018 title race: apart from the other titular candidates, who will complain ?!
