Paris Motor Show - The turbo diesel motorcycle and the Franco-American meet at the Mondial - Occasions NEANDER WAKAN

A turbo diesel motorcycle and a – for the most part – French project can be seen exclusively at the 2007 Mondial du Deux Roues. A partner of these high-tech projects, Motul is very proud to present the Neander and the Wakan. Discovery.

Neander is a German engineering company specializing in turbo-diesel engines. Seven years ago, it launched the project for the world’s first turbo-diesel motorcycle, in collaboration with the Munich High-Tech Research Institute..

The Neander Turbo-D

Today, the Neander Turbo-Diesel is a reality! The cost of developing and manufacturing the model presented to the public for the first time at the 2007 Mondial du Deux-Roues would amount to "2 million euros", announces to Site Patrick Hornstein, advertising agent at Zone Rouge, at the origin of his exhibition on the Motul stand.

Produced in only two copies, future commercial production is not yet on the 2008 program but "maybe in a year or two, at a price between 60 and 65,000 €", continues Mr. Hornstein.

On the official website of the brand, however, we learn that it is planned to produce 250 models and that the price is set at € 95,000 … Anyway, the technical description of the machine turns out interesting: here is what you can get with 200 potatoes !

Motor:

  • In-line twin, 4-stroke Turbo diesel, liquid cooled, 16 to 1 compression, 4 valves per cylinder with individual adjustment, double crankshaft.

  • Displacement: 1430cc

  • Power: 100 hp at 4200 rpm

  • Torque: 20mkg at 2600rpm

  • Power supply: Bosch EFI common rail injection, Garett Turbo with intercooler

  • Gearbox: 6-speed, final belt transmission

Cycle part:

  • Frame: Chrome molybdenum steel, motor integrated into the supporting structure

  • Front suspension: Double telescopic fork

  • Rear suspension: White Power or Ohlins shock absorber (option)

  • Front brake: Dual 300mm disc, 4-piston Performance Machine calipers

  • Rear brake: 300mm single disc, Performance Machine 4-piston caliper

  • Front and rear tires: 150 / 80-17 and 240 / 40-18 or 210 / 50-17 (option)

  • Tank: 14 liters

  • Wheelbase: 1920 mm

  • Seat height: 650 mm

  • Dry weight: 295 kg

Performances:

  • More than 220 km / h (on circuit)

  • Consumption: 4.5l / 100 km

In cars, Diesel engines are now the majority in France and even the 24 Hours of Le Mans are now won with "fuel oil boxes"….

But it seems that the Neander is too late to give birth to a new movement in the world of motorcycles: today, manufacturers are eyeing more on the side of the electricity fairy … !

The Franco-American Wakan

The S&S engine has the shape of a Harley Davidson engine, the mounts of a Harley Davidson engine but … it is not a Harley Davidson engine! Superb, this huge American 1640 cc V-Twin delivers a power of 120 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and a torque of 17m / kg at 4,000 rpm.

It is powered by a Keihin FCR 41mm flat bushel carburetor. The ignition box is a Dynatec CDI and the gearbox is 5 speed. Until then, the American touch is omnipresent. But that would be forgetting the cycle part which resolutely displays a much more "European" style….

Nothing could be more logical, since the Wakan was born from the imagination of a French engineer: Joël Domergue, already at the origin with Marc Tessier of Scorpa trial motorcycles. It was at the end of 1999 that the insatiable engineer created Engineering and More Ltd and decided to embark on the production of "mini series", the first model of which was exhibited at the Mondial..

Chrome molybdenum frame with integrated oil reservoir, Ceriani upside down 46mm fork, ZF Sachs cantilever damper, 340mm front brake discs with AJP 6 piston caliper and 220mm rear with AJP caliper, 13 liter reservoir placed under the saddle and 182 kg dry. The machine would exceed 250 km / h (on the circuit, of course!) And consume 5.4 l per 100 km.

As for the original details, in addition to the perfect goldsmith’s finish of the whole, we note the simplicity of the headlight unit / counters (digital display) / turn signals unit, which is only connected to the main beam by a single socket..

Already marketed in the United States, this machine could be distributed in France soon at a price of around € 28,000 … On condition of passing the homologation stage. An achievement as beautiful as it is effective? To test !
