Practical guides - Practical guide to motorcycle trips in Europe - Portugal: a gem for two wheels!

With the opening of its borders, Europe offers a wide variety of landscapes to French bikers. However, if entering another country is easy, the rules of the road and driving may vary. To guide you, Site takes stock.

Portugal: a jewel for two wheels !

Among the reasons for choosing Portugal for a motorcycle excursion, we can cite magnificent reliefs, fine sandy beaches (the Costa de Caparica being the largest in Europe), mild – but variable – weather and roads that invite you to walk.

A trip to Portugal involves a passage through Spain (see below). As is often the case with countries bordering the sea, the landscapes passing along the roads are magnificent. But because of the strong winds which deposit dust and sand on the road, grip is sometimes precarious..

To remember

  • Current speed limits: 50 km / h in built-up areas, 90 km / h outside, 100 km / h on four lanes, 120 km / h on motorways

  • Currency: Euro

  • Emergency number: 112 (whatever the phone)

  • Helmet compulsory

  • Be wary of the behavior sometimes "sport" of the natives !
  • There remain superb cities such as Lisbon (the capital), Porto or Estoril, which hosts the largest oceanarium in Europe but above all the famous MotoGP race on its 4,180-meter route! Motorcycle traffic is not prohibitive, since the Portuguese highway code is very close to French. The direction of traffic is to the right and drivers on roundabouts have priority over those who wish to enter them. As the metric system and the Euro are used in Portugal, the transition with France goes smoothly: even the blood alcohol level on the handlebars is the same (0.5 g / l)..
