Very popular with road bike users, cruise control incorporates a new function: it now adapts to the speed of the vehicle in front of them! Announced in 2018 by KTM, the ACC device developed by Bosch is finally launched first by BMW.

Almost 100 years old, BMW Motorrad is proud to have participated in the great development of production motorcycles. On its official website, a dedicated page precisely lists "the most significant innovations" which mark the history of the propeller brand, since the release of its first motorcycle in 1923, the R32…

Rear brake pedal in 1924, hydraulically damped telescopic fork in 1935, oval tube frame in 1936, full swingarm in 1955, hydraulic steering damper in 1960, double disc brake in 1973, full fairing in 1976, heated grips in 1979, motorcycle ABS and electronic injection in 1988, electronic control of the suspensions in 2004, multiplexing in 2005, adaptive cornering lighting in 2010 … the list goes on, and is growing in 2020 !

On a clear road and in a straight line, the device maintains the speed chosen by the driver, like any conventional cruise control. On the other hand, it automatically reduces the speed of the motorcycle if the latter overtakes another vehicle, then maintains a safety distance previously selected by the user..

This distance (short, medium or long) from the vehicle in front is set using a single button next to the cruise control controls. All the settings will appear directly on the – magnificent – color TFT screen on the dashboard … which should not be admired for too long when driving !

The new ACC which can be disengaged in favor of the "simple" DCC regulator – or even the primary throttle! -, "also has two predefined modes: comfortable or dynamic, which offer passengers more or less marked acceleration and deceleration", adds BMW.

Another function described by the German brand: "in bends, speed is automatically reduced by ACC if necessary and a comfortable lean angle is then favored. However, as the lean angle increases, the braking dynamics and acceleration is limited in order to maintain stable driving and not to destabilize the driver by sudden braking or acceleration ".

"Achtung", no automatic emergency braking !

BMW Motorrad finally warns that "the driver must take control in certain situations. Indeed, ACC is set to only adapt to moving vehicles. Thus, in the case of a stationary vehicle, such as in the tail traffic jam or at a traffic light for example, the driver must brake himself ".
