Anticipating the announced death of the thermal engine, the German manufacturer wondered what would happen to its flat twin, a technological and visual symbol of BMW for more than 90 years. Clearly, how to ensure that when you see a BMW electric motorcycle it is immediately associated with the brand? First part of the answer: the Vision DC Roadster concept…

"The Boxer engine is the heart of BMW motorcycles and the Vision DC Roadster shows how we have been able to retain the visual identity of a BMW while offering a new kind of ride," says Edgar Heinrich.

For the design director at BMW Motorrad, "anyone who has tried an electric motorcycle knows that the pleasure of riding is the same" as on a thermal motorcycle, thanks to the "immediately available torque which allows breathtaking acceleration".

In place of the Boxer, BMW installed a vertical battery facing the road, cooled by two fans on each side to remind the cylinders. "As on the, the cooling elements are positioned in the air flow", continues the manufacturer while the electric motor – cylindrical in shape – placed under the battery is directly connected to the transmission..

Other elements forge an obvious link with Boxer production. Among the most important: the single-sided swingarm which contains the final transmission by shaft and cardan, solutions historically linked to the BMW flat. As well as the unconventional front axle of the Duolever type, here in an aesthetically refined version.

Finally, the tubular-type steel frame is also part of this identification perspective with the current "thermal" R1250s. On the other hand, the central placement and in front of the saddle of the mono-shock absorber with separate cylinder is rather new on a BMW motorcycle! Also note the presence of Metzeler slick tires and full LED lighting.
