Vins Motors Duecinquanta: ultra-light 2-stroke sports motorcycles and Euro4 !
The young Italian manufacturer Vins Motors exhibited at the EICMA in Milan 2017 two very promising motorcycles designed around a carbon chassis and a direct injection twin: the 249 cc road-approved Duecinquanta and its circuit-only version, the Duecinquanta Competizione of 288 cc.
The Vins Motors project takes up the impossible challenge: this team of passionate craftsmen based in Marenallo (northern Italy) combines a range of technological solutions that are extremely complex to master, and even more to homologate in series, in a single motorcycle! These include the two-stroke engine, the self-supporting monocoque frame or the unconventional front and rear suspensions….
- MNC Guide :
Add to that the fierce desire to contain the weight below 100 kg and achieve high performance, and you have an exciting motorcycle on paper but whose industrial outcome seems like a daydream. And yet, this bombinette worthy of a prototype of the two-stroke era of the Grands Prix does exist: Vins Motors unveiled at EICMA 2017 the finalized versions of its two Duecinquanta.
These Duecinquanta are available in a road-approved version and another "Racing" version, exclusively reserved for use on the circuit: the Duecinquanta Competizione. Each is powered by a water-cooled, 90 ° open, two-stroke V-twin with 249cc displacement on the standard Duecinquanta and 288cc on the "Competizione" via an increased bore (58 x 54.5 mm against 54 x 54.5 mm).
- MNC of March 17, 2017 :
Thanks to a direct injection system, the motorcycle would be both efficient and reasonably low in fuel and polluting emissions: the road Duecinquanta would thus respond favorably to Euro4 standards! This feat refers to the new injected 2-stroke all-terrain KTMs, a technology that has been mastered for several years in the marine environment and which makes it possible in particular to do without the traditional gasoline-oil mixture. .
If the performances of the homologated model are not communicated, Vins Motors announces on the other hand that the Competizione would develop "more than 80 ch" and would hit the 240 km / h! Under these conditions, counting on a power between 50 and 60 ch for the Duecinquanta equipped with headlights and other "street legal" equipment seems reasonable..
Doesn’t that sound very impressive to you as a cavalry? In absolute terms, it’s true … except that the Italians are featherweight: "less than 95 kg" for the road Duecinquanta (also called "Sport") and ten less for the Competizione! 80 hp for 85 kg: here is a weight / power ratio that makes you want to, especially since the 2-stroke mechanics is normally much more responsive – in the revs – than a 4-stroke equivalent !
Lightweight and … very complex !
Fervent followers of Colin Chapman, the English automotive engineer and founder of Lotus and the originator of the famous maxim "Light is right", the members of Vins Motors are therefore convinced that weight is the enemy of good, especially on a motorcycle. Hence their obsessive quest for the slightest superfluous gram, which results first of all in the development of a monocoque frame with self-supporting carbon rear part..
This unique chassis is covered with a casing that is also "charred", left in the raw state on the Duecinquanta Competizione to take advantage of the light reflections on the fiber: splendid! Another peculiarity of its Italian motorcycles: their damping provided by unconventional systems, front and rear.
The fork takes the form of a double carbon arm at the top of which a spring provides the damping functions. Question rigidity, the Duecinquanta must arise there! The rear suspension is not left out with its spring placed in a transverse position (perpendicular to the Dymag rim), a system derived from Formula 1 which would promote the work of the shock absorber on the angle, assures the Italian brand..
The arms of the swingarm are also woven in carbon fibers, while the general measurements complete the convincing of the devilish agility of this exceptional motorcycle: wheelbase less than 1400 mm, "closed" caster angle (24 ° ) and very narrow 17-inch Pirelli tires (110 mm and 150 mm). The transalpine should hardly resist triggering in curves !
To stop this motorcycle awarded the 2016 design prize in Germany, a simple 300 mm disc is installed at the front. This rotor is clamped by a 4-piston radial caliper from the Spanish manufacturer J. Juan, unsurprisingly controlled by a reinforced hose (2-piston caliper and 200 mm disc at the rear).
On our roads in spring 2018 ?
Among the other subtleties of these Duecinquanta, let us also quote their extractable six-speed gearbox, their electronic valve on the exhaust which ensures better gas regulation (very important aspect on a 2-stroke) or the multitude of configurations offered to future buyers (colors, equipment, peripherals, etc.).
Because, yes, the standard Duecinquanta and Competizione will indeed be marketed in the near future! The manufacturer of Maranello expects a launch in Europe "for the spring of 2018". The price ? The range would vary between 40,000 € and 50,000 € … Yes, it stings! But with regard to technology (see the video then the photo gallery below), who will cry out? ?
