Radars - Speed limit at 80 km-h: the CSIAM speechless? -

The traditional press conference at the start of the year organized by the Chambre Syndicale de l’Automobile et du Motocycle was an opportunity to address a hot topic: the speed limit to 80 km / h, on which the CSIAM does not agree. ‘voluntarily not express. Its president "on a motorcycle" explains why…

The position of the Chambre Syndicale de l’Automobile et du Motocycle is – unfortunately? – unequivocally: "the CSIAM does not have to comment on the 80 km / h limitation on French roads. This subject is not of the first order for us. Those who are on the front line, those who are legitimate , these are clearly user associations ".

The CSIAM will therefore not join the common front established by the main actors of motorized two-wheelers (FFMC, FFM, Codever, CNPA) and joined last Friday by the association 40 million motorists, which is united against this news "de -mesure des-magots ": #MoinsDeMorts #PlusDeCash…

  • 80 km / h :

"We, industrialists, have other fights", justifies Thierry Archambault, president-delegate of the CSIAM. "We are not saying that the 80 km / h issue is not important," he said, "but it is simply not on the priority list of the fights that the members want to see carried out by the CSIAM".

Beyond the union chamber, each manufacturer is free to take a position on "80 km / h" and their potential consequences in terms of road safety, the environment, sales or image … "through articles very well written (mainly on Site, Editor’s note!) ", underlines Mr. Archambault.

The voice of user associations !

No need therefore, according to the head of the CSIAM, to spend – lose? – time to "find a consensus among all the brands on a subject which, once again, is considered by the members as not being a subject on which the CSIAM is obviously not legitimate for s ‘Express".

According to Jean-Luc Mars, elected, the reduction in speed on the roads in 2018 should not reduce the attractiveness of motorcycles, nor impact its market: "we see a major evolution of the market towards motorcycles and behaviors a a little more peaceful, and it is not the passage from 90 to 80 that will fundamentally change the commercial situation ".

  • 80 km / h :

Nevertheless, "in substance and over time, a rapid and repeated multiplication of measures which limit the freedom to circulate or have fun on a motorcycle will end up having an impact. But this 80 km / h measure taken in isolation is not not felt like a threat ".

The new president working on a motorbike even allows himself a little joke: "having made several round trips to Paris lately, on a motorbike, we can finally consider that Ms. Hidalgo is the best sales agent we have ever had … Because I pity the people who drive around Paris and its suburbs ".

To defend the interests – of the manufacturers – of motorized two-wheelers, the CSIAM is counting on "all the services it provides to society: in terms of mobility solution, pollution also because moving 150 kg in a fluid way is more interesting than stuck two tonnes in traffic jams, in terms of pleasure, freedom, travel, leisure, etc. "

Priorities are elsewhere…

According to Jean-Luc Mars, the CSIAM and its members (21 foreign brands) must on the one hand highlight the myriad of assets available to motorcycles and scooters, and on the other hand get rid of "two huge stones in the boot ", two problems whose resolutions take precedence over thinking about speed limits !

"The first of these two subjects, on which we are systematically aligned, is pollution", estimates Mister Mars … "But noise pollution, because it is audible! On gas emissions, we are" heard "when we explain that our motorcycles pollute little because they are modern, light, have the latest technologies, etc. But with regard to noise, we always find some diehards who hinder us in our efforts".

Another problem to be solved urgently according to the boss of CSIAM moto (and Triumph France): "accident. The 80 km / h, personally I tell you, that fuck me annoys me, but we are faced with a solution provided by a government that has a problem: accidents in France are unfortunately disproportionate compared to other European countries ".

"Can 80 km / h be used for something", asks Mr. Mars? "I have no idea. What is obvious is that our road statistics are bad compared to England, Germany, Switzerland and even Italy, which contradicts the excuse of the Latin discipline more dilettante … ", he concludes.

"The magic wand does not exist, any more than it exists to solve the problem of unemployment … We would know it since time", regrets the president of the manufacturers. "On the other hand, we all have small levers to improve the situation: training, education, rider equipment, motorcycles offered by manufacturers to beginners so that they are less likely to adopt dangerous behavior, advice issued by the press over the pages, etc. "

First, deal with (noise) pollution and accidents

"We completely understand that user associations are opposed (or" propose ", will complete a spokesperson for the FFMC, Editor’s note). For our part, we are trying to make ourselves heard by the authorities in a diplomatic manner", calculates Jean -Luc Mars.

The last meeting with the interministerial delegate for road safety would have been satisfactory, precisely: "our feeling is that the speech of the FFMC favoring the encouragement to wear protective equipment rather than the obligation has been heard", assures the president of CSIAM moto.

According to the "big boss" of Triumph in France, motorcyclists should not soon be obliged to wear too expensive equipment. That said, "we must all be able to make our bikers understand that wearing boots and a shell jacket is going in the right direction, in order to avoid that within three years, the airbag is imposed on everyone ".

During his plea, Jean-Luc Mars invites "all actors to act in order to reduce the accident rate of two-wheelers, because 800 deaths per year on the roads in France, it is a tragedy. We are all moved. by the loss of relatives: Marco Simoncelli, or Robert Doron and Anthony Delhalle at the beginning of the year … It affects us, it hurts us. However, there are 800 tragedies per year on the roads. This is not acceptable, we must fight this with our means and our solutions ".

"Let’s not hide our face", he advises in conclusion: "if we do not all succeed together, governments will want to hit hard to obtain results, by increasingly limiting our freedoms, our pleasures, our passions . This is my position, and those of many members: we are going to defend it ", he promises.
