Road rallies - 72nd Rallye de l'Ain: Objectif Moon! - Stage 2: mid-day, mid-night!

By winning this 72nd Rallye de l’Ain, Maxime Olivieri takes the lead in the championship but the battle was tough between Maximus and Pierre Mouneu, Team Site driver, who almost won this event trusted by the Monos… Story !

Stage 2: mid-day mid-night !

The second stage of the Rallye de l’Ain 2009 is unusual: to allow a stage worthy of the name while respecting the time limit constraints defined by the rally commission (end at 2 a.m.), UM Ain, the organizing club , has designed a new race pattern by creating a mini loop of less than an hour which takes only one of the two stages but which will be counted with the night stage which will have only two stages.

After a heavy downpour, the start of this semi-stage is given at 8:00 p.m. and the drivers quickly join the Preau special. And there, Moon does it again! Boosted by his friends from the Team Site, Pierre Mouneu slams us again with a scratch in 3’03”830, more than 5 seconds in front of Manoel Delaval and almost 6 seconds in front of Maxime Olivieri! (3’08”902 for Mano, 3’09”502 for Maximus).

A small road link then brings us back to Cerdon for assistance and the "night" configuration of the machines..

22:00. This time, it’s really the usual night stage that is launched. For now, Moon is leading the rally! Maxime Olivieri will not take ill-considered risks: he intends to keep the lead in the points he has just taken over Manoel Delaval in the provisional classification of the championship…

A golden opportunity for Pierre Mouneu, winner of a special in the Moto Tour 2005 (Jonchery-Pevy) and the Dark Dog Tour category Mono in 2007, to win his first rally! The Site pilot, used to hill climbs, ice races and whatnot, has not yet won a French Rally Championship event on his record … Suspense !

First special of this night loop: Preau. It’s dark of course, and of course, it’s raining! Manoel Delaval, who wants to take the big points of the stage, scores the best time in the special more than two seconds ahead of Pierre Mouneu who slams 1’28”614. Maxime Olivieri takes third time in 1’29”347 … Go courage Moon, more than a special and you’re still ahead !

Everything will therefore be decided in the last special … The course is a little different from the day one, but the efficient and clear signage put in place by the organization makes monitoring relatively easy. Except that this link will cost the unlucky Bruno Schiltz dearly (fall in Corsica, Beaujolais penalty …): while he was driving at medium speed, Bruno found himself on the ground without a precise explanation, his BMW R 1200 HP2 gimbal broken. … Cause or result of the fall? Mystery…

So we join the Preau special: so, Moon or not Moon? Mano once again sets the best time in 3’05”615 and thus confirms his first place in the day stage. The second time goes to Maxime Olivieri with an honest 3’07”247, and Pierre Mouneu takes the third time in … 3’12”223! Combined with the two stages, he will therefore barely miss a second to win the rally. !

It could have, but it didn’t. "I was afraid to win !", Pierre will humbly admit after having explained his sudden drop in pace by a lack of concentration"I opened and closed my visor at times, and then I had the impression that the bike was going to run out of fuel, it accelerated on its own at the end of the special"… No big deal Pierre, it’s just a postponement !
