78% of bikers do not obey the speed limits
For the first time, a study presents the speeding violations observed on the French road network. Motorcyclists are logically at the top of the ranking but, more surprisingly, they are immediately followed by truck drivers..
According to the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), which has been measuring the speeds observed on the various road networks for several years according to the type of vehicle, bikers and truck drivers are the two categories that are least respectful of speed limits. According to the figures observed between May and August 2002, 77.7% of motorcyclists do not respect the limits and 65% exceed them by more than 10 km / h. More surprising – and more worrying -, the truck drivers come just behind: 65% of them do not respect the limits and 30% exceed them by more than 10 km / h. Finally, 56.2% of motorists do not respect the limits and 33% exceed them by more than 10 km / h.
Bikers therefore come first in the two classifications (simple excess and excess over 10 km / h) – which is hardly surprising, especially since the study covers the period when the roads are dry (from May to August ). Over the same summer period in 1999, 2000 and 2001, we were on average 65% not respecting the limits and 50% exceeding them by more than 10 km / h. In 1998, the rate of exceeding the limits by motorcycles was comparable to that of today (see graph). It was a good opportunity to finally recognize that arbitrary speed limits are no longer suitable today, and that "speeding" does not necessarily mean "excessive speed" … but the government does not understand it by this hear.
The study also relates to the non respect of the safety interdistances between vehicles and shows that "in traffic overall, more than one in four drivers – and in heavy traffic nearly 60% of drivers – are in violation"."Intervehicular times are not the shortest on the motorway, ONISR note, but more on the rural, departmental and national network, and at average speeds between 90 km / h and 120 km / h".
