Road Safety is launching from tomorrow a new campaign aimed at bikers, with a title that deserves to be widely integrated by young motorcycle licensees: "On a motorcycle, the greatest danger is to think that he there is not any"…

"On a motorbike, the biggest danger is to think that there aren’t any"

This new spot is based on figures published by the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), according to which bikers are killed mainly in the countryside (61%), during the day (68%), or when it is beautiful (94%). If we combine these three conditions, we arrive at 43% of motorcycle fatalities.

"We die when we drive, and we drive when the weather is nice"

Clearly, "we die when we drive and we drive when the weather is nice", summarizes Louis Fernique, secretary general of the ONISR and motorcyclist, who does not hesitate to ride in Scotland on the handlebars of his BMW R1200C equipped with a luggage trailer.

This observation is clearly evidenced by the mortality cycle of motorcyclists (motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc) compared to that of other vehicles..

"On a motorbike, it’s not what you think: the majority of fatal accidents take place, not in town in rainy weather, but in the open countryside, on dry roads, in good weather", notes Road Safety. : "2 out of 3 fatal accidents occur in the open countryside, in 7 out of 10 cases in broad daylight, and in 8 out of 10 cases in good weather".

"It’s not what you think"

Thus out of the 704 motorcyclists killed in 2010, 432 (61%) died in the open countryside against 272 (39%) in urban areas (including small villages), including 15 in intramural Paris (2%).

Except for pedestrians, the open countryside is also the most "deadly" in all categories of vehicles (86% for cars), since it is the most geographically extended area..

The objective of this film is therefore to show that if the motorcyclist is necessarily vigilant in town (doors, telephones while driving, refusal of priority, etc.), he must not relax his attention when arriving on the small country roads..

The fact remains that in relation to the fleet, road mortality has fallen considerably for 40 years for all categories of vehicles..

Road fatalities have been falling for 40 years

The main challenge for road safety is now to be able to use more reliable statistics, particularly for motorized two-wheelers, both on the fleet and on all accidents (not just fatal).

Last minute: Jean-Luc Nevache leaves the road safety

The interministerial delegate for Road Safety Jean-Luc Nevache (read in particular) has just been appointed chief of staff to the Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Marisol Touraine.

Metramoto project

This is the objective of the Metramoto project (MEsure du TRAfic des deux-Roues MOTOrises) carried out by the National Research Agency (ANR), which aims in particular to set up telemetry measurements, video recordings, radars and magnetometers capable of measuring the mass of vehicles.
