The BMW S1000XR is skin, bones and muscles new in 2020: launched in 2015 and updated in 2017, the very sporty maxitrail derived from the (new) S1000RR works on its explosiveness, its reactivity and its endurance. Site was able to perform a quick first test. Very fast !

The BMW Motorrad maxitrail spoke is already very well equipped with the references R1250GS and Adventure. More and more powerful and efficient on the road, the GS encroaches a little too much on the territory of the S1000XR … This maxisportive model is trying to regain its distance in 2020 !

According to the German brand, "the new version of the best-selling Sport Adventure (but regularly beaten in France by the Multistrada, Super Adventure and Versys, NDLR) is decidedly lighter, more agile and with an unprecedented amplitude between long journeys and sporting performances ".

Like the first model appeared in 2015, this S1000XR 2020 is based on the S1000RR. However, the sports bike was completely revised in 2019! In 2020, its higher version on (sub) legs, more comfortable and slightly bridled is therefore quite new too..

"The new in-line 4-cylinder is based on the S1000RR engine and develops 121 kW (165 hp) at 11,000 rpm. The maximum torque reaches 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm", reminds us of the manufacturer. eve of our short catch in hands gloves: three short hours of driving for 136 km (taking photos and videos unfortunately takes time).

The maximum values โ€‹โ€‹of the watermill of the S1000XR 2020 are therefore strictly identical to those of the 2017 version. Still as attractive, the BMW receives the "Euro5" (Vs Euro4) stamp which should make it more respectful of its environment. Consumption would also be down -8%, or 6.2 l / 100 km.

Oddly enough, the mention "QuickShaft" – this variable valve timing so much vaunted on the S1000RR and the R1250 series – does not appear in the sales pitch for the 2020 S1000XR. "The bike did not require the use of this technology, "said engine manufacturers across the Rhine.

The profile of the cams (fixed, therefore) and the admission would have been specifically configured to optimize the mid-range of the maxitrail. On the graph that BMW gave us (see above), however, we can see that the last S1000RR has better filled curves between 5500 and 7000 rpm. Thanks to its first set of cams, precisely !

Compared to the S1000RR 2019, the S1000XR 2020 actually has a first advantage in low revs, then at the start of the third third of the tachometer. After 10,000 rpm on the other hand, the 4-legged maxitrail stops galloping while that of the sportswoman stretches its stride further … Thank you for the second set of sliding cams !

It has almost everything of a Superbike

In judging BMW’s work, however, it is more consistent to refer to the performance of the older S1000XR. On this plan, MNC shoots him his shot hat helmet since the new cleaner and more economical engine seems overall better than its predecessor … which was already not lacking in tone !

At the same time, the S1000XR 2020 is equipped as standard with numerous advanced electronic aids: four engine modes (Rain, Road, Dynamic and Dynamic Pro), 6-axis inertial unit, DTC traction control with separate anti-wheeling function, Dynamic ESA suspensions (Pro version optional) ), Dynamic Brake Control system, MSR torque and engine brake regulators, ABS Pro…

To manage this arsenal – of war? -, the pilot – fighter! – benefits from proven tools. Introduced on top-of-the-range models, they are used more and more on BMW motorcycles: well-thought-out – but not backlit – stems, the clever "Motorrad Multi Controler" ring and a very attractive 6.5-inch TFT color screen well appointed (see our).

Very readable, the dashboard concentrates the essential data for driving. When stationary, the pilot then has easy access to a wealth of additional information. A perfectly developed application can even act as a relay. The "geeks" will love to relive their walks and compare their statistics.

The cycle part of the S1000XR is also completely redesigned, taking advantage of the work done – and the equipment mounted – on the S1000RR. Like the Superbike in particular, the maxitrail replaces its Brembo calipers with Hayes – with the BMW logo – and is satisfied with a rear suspension without links. Its inverted fork is less maousse than the old one (45 mm Vs 46).

The XR stings like the RR its angled valve rims and thus loses precious 1.8 kilograms (especially at high speed)! In addition, 1.6 kg have been saved thanks to the new swingarm associated with the new Flex Frame more (sup) carried by the engine (5 kg lighter). The exhaust lost 1.2 kg, the ABS system 400 g, etc..

In the end, the technical sheet indicates a full weight of 226 kg. It’s only 2 kg lighter than the previous model, right? "Indeed, but with equivalent equipment (with packs), the difference rises to 10 kg", beg us to believe BMW, "even 13 kg with the battery" M "ultralight" … which "will" lighten you by 200 euros !

To avoid carrying a backpack, future owners – or long-term tenants ?! – can also select a pair of suitcases from the accessories. However, good news, the brackets are fitted as standard. A good point for tourists … who plan to bring back trophies from the Isle of Man ?!

To empty their pockets, the same customers have a small storage space at the top of the tank where papers, a credit card and receipts, a ticket for the highway and traffic violation notices can slip. (?) or a small road map because the GPS is optional…

The options are still a little too numerous: we would have liked to benefit from the original heated grips, hand guards, cruise control, center stand and luggage rack, or even the Key Less system, the quick -shifter Up and Down…

As always with BMW Motorrad, the price of the motorcycle displayed in the dealership or on the official site climbs quickly with the addition of – essential? – packs, accessories … and the selection of the "Racing" red color (+355 euros), less gloomy than the cement gray – sorry, "Ice" – in which the S1000XR is offered from 17,900 euros.

You will have to slip a twenty … thousand and six hundred and forty-five euro bill to the dealer to order a motorcycle such as BMW Motorrad has configured it for this launch: gray color, Dynamic and Touring packs, optional emergency calls , adaptive cornering lighting and tire pressure sensor. On the way on next page !
