The Tuono V4 1100 is undergoing a new evolution in 2019: its top-of-the-range "Factory" version is equipped with new Ohlins electronic suspensions! Site quickly tested the Aprilia maxi roadster (maxi sporty and maxi enjoyable!) On pretty small Italian roads… Andiamo !

In 2015, Aprilia launched on the motorcycle market a brand new version of its Tuono V4: engine inflated to 1100 cc (175 hp and 121 Nm), look closer to that of the original RSV4 and improved comfort were to allow the maxisportive maxiroadster of s ” impose in the face of ever sharper competition.

A year after this release, Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more fortunate than the others – had just witnessed the (standard) face of the excellent and the brand new .

On the commercial level, however, Noale’s roadster had bowed to these two motorcycles, leading the sales of "maxijouissive" maxiroadsters in France in 2016: (against, twice as much anyway!), 934 for the Suz ‘and 830 for the Yam’.

From 2017, the Tuono V4 1100 was again forced to evolve in order to comply with the new European anti-pollution standard. The Italian engineers had taken advantage of this transition to Euro4 to make some additional changes.

Besides the cleaner version – but still so wild! – from its large 4-cylinder V (identical power and maximum torque), the beautiful Italian adopted a new Ohlins fork, a pair of 330 mm discs, Brembo M50 calipers, ABS on the angle, color instrumentation, etc.

Unfortunately – for Aprilia, its 192 dealers in France and the shareholders of the Piaggio group! -, sales of the Tuono V4 did not take off in France: in 2017, only were registered in our territory, which is nevertheless lined with pretty roads … and ugly radars? It’s also true

Premium Site subscribers – who, we thank them, support their favorite newspaper, its independence and its impertinence – remember that the maxiroadsters segment was dominated this year by the (), the () and the ().

In 2018, the score of the Aprilia maxiroadster (RR and Factory versions combined) logically decreased:. By way of comparison, it was three times less than the two leaders: the renewed (778 immates) and the (777!).

This year, the benefits of a new electronic update! The previous model – as well as its RR version – was already very well equipped in this area, thanks to the fourth generation of Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC).

The two Tuono already benefited from ATC, AWC, AQS, ACC, APL and ALC, not to mention the mandatory ABS (read our technical point on the third page to decipher all these codes). In 2019, the screen of the "Factory" displays a new acronym: ASC !

Always more electronics … and money

The Ohlins suspensions of the "factory" model are now electronically controlled … with regard to the hydraulic part only, hence their qualifier "semi-active": "which effectively means that the spring preload is always managed manually ", confirms the Aprilia team.

Another small novelty for 2019: the "Superpole" color that Site considers more successful than the previous one. The gray and black areas are reversed compared to the 2017-2018 model and now blend better with the different mechanical elements.

Rid of the unnecessary green touch on the seat backrest, the Factory 2019 retains its rims and radiator scoops painted red Aprilia "firecracker": a touch of color to take as a warning? Yes because in some ways this bike is evil…

Although charmed by this decoration, Site is unfortunate that this Tuono Factory does not have another color. All bikers interested in this model will not necessarily be seduced by this painting that is too sober, too disunited, too close to the old version … according to taste !

What does not change, fortunately, is the remarkable finish of certain key parts such as the frame: MNC cracks in front of the double treatment of the aluminum (polished and grainy), the impeccable welds and the beautiful machining of the anchor points of the engine or swingarm, otherwise just as shiny.

The peripherals are also magnificent: the fork with golden sleeves and tubes, its carefully designed foot and perfectly connected to the Brembo calipers, the finely perforated footrest plates, the selector and the brake pedal adjustable and lightened to the maximum, etc. The list is long !

In return, the price also reaches new heights: in this full electronic version, the Tuono V4 1100 Factory reaches 17,999 euros (or even 19,999 euros in Germany, we consider ourselves happy dear compatriots!). However, at this price, owners can demand a perfect motorcycle in every way. And this is not the case…

One of the big weak points of the Tuono V4 is the too limited height of its small fairing sides and the lack of upper trim. Coolant jar and electronic box on the right, gas cylinder and large electrical terminal on the left: Aprilia should really cover it up !

Site is also astonished not to find on this high-end motorcycle a stupid clutch lever adjustable in spacing … To always want to offer more electronic assistance, the firm of Noale ends up forgetting this little gadget yet very useful and proposed on the brake lever !

MNC notes another oversight: the instrumentation – which displays in real time the degree of inclination of the motorcycle, the level of throttle opening and pressure in the braking circuit (!) – does not include … of fuel gauge. Only the reserve indicator reminds the owner that it is time to refuel.

Despite its large tank (18.5 liters), the Tuono V4 1100 risks going to the pump frequently: Italian engine manufacturers estimate its average consumption at 7.7 l / 100 km! We can hardly accuse them of cheating: MNC had consumed a little less with the Tuono V4 1100 RR "Euro3" from 2015 ().

Do we forget these faults once the handlebars are in hands gloves? Are electronic suspensions worth this extension of 800 euros required by the Factory 2019 compared to the 2017 model? Site will try to answer these questions by traveling 140 km in the Dolomites (Italy). On the (small) road next page !
