Honda is taking advantage of the compulsory passage to Euro5 motorcycle standards to update its popular CB125F: new trim, even more economical engine and 11 kg less on the scale are among the strengths of this 2021 novelties accessible with the B license (car) and 7 hour training. Presentation.

Indestructible, economical, practical: the pragmatism of the Honda appeals to a wide range of young and old bikers, who do not have the means or the inclination to spend 5,000 euros on a more flashy 125 cc motorcycle like the Yamaha MT-125 and KTM 125 Duke or the classy Honda CB125R.

Launched in 2015 to succeed the CBF125, the CB125F is the archetype of the hardworking and serious motorcycle. Not particularly sexy nor powerful with its air-cooled single cylinder of 10.6 hp, it is an authentic utility motorcycle for less than 3000 euros! This new 2021 vintage follows the same trend but benefits from some great improvements.

Lighter and more efficient Euro5 "ESP" engine

Let’s quickly go over the look of this CB125F: regulars will not be disoriented by its new side scoops and its front face now characterized by an LED headlight. This small roadster manufactured in the Honda Atessa factory in Italy retains a versatile line, in line with its vocation.

The heavy lifting is on its 124 cc single camshaft engine which adopts the "Enhanced Smart Power" (ESP) technology found on Forza, PCX or SH scooters. "ESP"? Translate by working on the reduction of friction to the benefits of performance and consumption. Or, ultimately, the same objective pursued by all manufacturers !

Concretely, the cylinder is slightly off-center to "reduce the friction between the liner and the piston skirt", while the four valves are mounted on needle bearings "always to limit friction", specifies Honda which also releases an alternator-starter : this part is used both to start and to produce current, to the benefit of the number of moving parts and the weight.

Result: this new engine to Euro5 standards is reduced by "7 kg", while developing a zest of additional power and torque with 10.9 hp (+0.3 hp) and 10.9 Nm (+0.7 Nm). "These characteristics translate into acceleration readings of 12.4 seconds per 200 m from a standing start," Honda said proudly. Zarma !

More importantly: the appetite already measured of the CB125F decreases further to go from "1.96 l / 100 km to 1.54 l / 100 km", assure its designers. The autonomy of this camel in the unleaded mode would thus reach "approximately 800 km (600 km previously)"…

This calculation is however optimistic insofar as the capacity of the tank decreases with the passage from 13 to 11 liters: calculator in hand, MNC falls rather on a theoretical radius of action of 714.3 km. What remains nevertheless exceptional: the oil tankers and the gas station attendant at the end of the street will hate it !

The essentials of series

In the chapter of the other evolutions of this CB125F, let us also quote the "1.7 kg" gained on its simple steel cradle frame which participate in the total lightening of "11 kg": the bike is announced for 117 kg in running order (128 kg in 2019). A particularly valuable asset for maneuvers with the engine off and urban journeys.

This generous weight reduction will also reassure beginner bikers, the main target targeted by this "Cebe". The same will appreciate its relaxed driving position, its standard center stand and passenger handle, as well as its new digital instrumentation with gear engaged, time and fuel gauge (but no tachometer).

On the other hand, the smallest (s) may tick in front of his saddle, which goes from 775 mm to 790 mm … MNC has a feeling, however, that this rise will be barely noticeable thanks to the smaller tank, which can save accessibility. by spreading the thighs less. We can also bet that the extra thickness of this seat benefits comfort !

Available in November 2020

As in 2020, the CB125F is camped on narrow tires of 80 and 90 mm in 18 inches: dimensions that promote the agility of this short motorcycle (1280 mm wheelbase) and good robber, while reducing the bill during the tire change.

Its suspensions – basic – do not know any significant changes for 2021: its non-adjustable 31 mm hydraulic fork and its shock absorbers adjustable in preload are calibrated towards comfort, without real sporting pretensions. It is not a CBR !

Note that Honda renews the combined "CBS" association between the rear drum and the front 240 mm disc and its 2-piston caliper, which dispenses this motorcycle from having ABS (not compulsory on the 125 cc if braking combined).

This new CB125F will be available in red, white and black from "November 2020", Honda predicts. Questioned by MNC, the French subsidiary is unable to give us its price: staying below the 3000 euros mark would be a plus to maintain its competitiveness against the Yamaha YS125 with similar arguments (2999 €) !
