Street Triple 765 RS test: the super sport roadster from Triumph
Triumph completely revises its mid-size roadsters for the new year 2017. First (top) model to pass between the gloves of Site: the Street Triple 765 RS, more powerful, more sophisticated, more "race" and more expensive than the R versions and S… Test !
Page 1 – Triumph renews its bestselling roadster
Ten years ago … Ten years ago already, with a 3-cylinder 675 cc in the middle of the medium-displacement roadsters then subscribed to twins or 4-legs … "In 2007, the Street Triple had redefined the rules of the game in its segment ", say the managers of the English brand," and we intend to do the same in 2017! "
Supported by one, copiously and tripled by one version, the little English roadster has sold, all versions combined, to more than 50,000 copies around the world, undoubtedly becoming the best-selling Triumph.
To perpetuate this "lovely success story", the Hinckley firm wanted to "keep the DNA of the bike, develop its character and revolutionize its performance". In order to meet the multiple demands of its vast clientele, Triumph has redoubled its efforts, immediately offering three models of its new roadster….
Unveiled last month on the Journal moto du Net, share the same 765 cc engine (read our technical point on the third page) but have different powers, equipment and finishes, because they do not hunt the same prey: " the S will be measured against the and, the R against the and the RS is found alone … or at a pinch against a ", situates the manufacturer.
The top-of-the-range RS model, which Triumph presents to us today near Barcelona, will be the first to arrive on the French market: from next March, at a price of 11,600 euros. The S placed at 8900 euros will land – from Thailand where all Street are produced – in April, followed in May by the R which will be displayed at 10,200 euros.
Once the three novelties have been produced, Triumph will set about manufacturing two complementary models: the S "A2" of 95 hp so restrictable for in Europe (and with the displacement reduced to 660 cc to correspond to the LAMS standard in Australia and New -Zeeland) and a low version of the S ("LRH" for Low Ride Height, with specific suspensions and saddle).
"The pre-orders from our dealers are very encouraging, and we have high hopes for the RS", tells us Jean-Luc Mars, director of Triumph in France (and with our Swiss neighbors as well). Asked by MNC on the distribution of sales of S, R and RS, the boss prefers to keep his forecasts secret.
"It’s a bit of the unknown," says the French big boss, "but we have the advantage of having a production tool that is sufficiently flexible to respond to changes in demand". For information, Mister Mars tells us all the same that "on the first generation, the mix was 55% Street and 45% R"…
"On the second generation, on the other hand, the distribution has gone to 20/80 in favor of R", continues our interlocutor. According to him, a combination of factors favored sales of the top-of-the-range model: "Street customers who were renewing their machine switched to the R, this R version was very successful, and the price also played a role since the difference was reduced from 1000 euros to around 650 ".
RS 765: the successor of the Street Triple R 675
In 2017, will customers of the old Street Triple R fall for the new RS? Will they not rather turn to the, whose S version is displayed only 900 euros more expensive in the same Triumph dealerships? "We don’t expect the RS to cannibalize the Speed", replies the CEO of Triumph France.
More powerful (140 hp for the 1050 cc, 123 for the 765 cc of the RS), much more torque (112 Nm Vs 77) but also significantly heavier (192 kg dry Vs 166), the Speed Triple S rolls in category maxi roadsters while the Street Triple RS fights in that of "mid-size"…
"With the increase in engine power that we could only achieve by increasing the displacement, the weight reduction was one of the main points of the specifications of the new Street", explains Felipe Lopez, engineer and development pilot at Triumph.
Mission accomplished for the Spanish since "as when it was released in 2007, the Street Triple is today the lightest machine in its segment," said Triumph. Despite the Euro4 standard, "we have gained weight on the exhaust (around 1.6 kg)", David Lopez in turn explains, "at the rear loop, and then a few grams here and there" , describes Felipe’s brother, who works in the same department !
Chiped with the very latest Speed Triple, the LED lights and their optical unit thus participate in the total reduction of 2 kg announced by the manufacturer: the old Street weighed 168 kg dry (standard versions like R) and the new ones weigh 166 kg dry, whether S, R or RS.
Like the 1050, the 765 adopts a shorter, therefore lighter skin! On the RS model, the height of the nose screen is reduced to the maximum and the mirrors are placed at the end of the handlebars, "in order to give this Street a sportier appearance than the S and R", consider its designers..
The magnificent pair of Brembo M50 calipers reinforces the family link with the Speed Triple R, unlike the choice of the fork: Ohlins NIX30 of 43 mm on the maxi luxurious maxi roadster for rappelling, Showa BPF of 41 mm (fully adjustable) on little sis RS.
The rear of the roadster is closer to that of the RX: double-stage saddle topped with a hood, flat and wide trim without passenger handles, sober LED taillight surmounting a very thin plastic plate holder which hardly protects projections, but projects an image again very sporty…
Completely redesigned, the swinging arm in gull wing ("Gullwing", like the Mercedes SL), perforated and Triumph logo is highlighted by the low exhaust much more compact than on the previous Street Triple 675. The support plates- feet – pilot as passenger – also gain in finesse…
An Ohlins shock absorber completes the endowment of the Street Triple RS, worthy of that of a real Supersport … The finish is also of a very high level, as is often the case with Triumph, in particular in its recent range of "Modern Classics".
“The beauty of the bike and its parts is as important as its performance, right?” Asks Jean-Luc Mars as we scrutinize his new product. "In my opinion, the pleasure of owning a motorcycle should begin as soon as you open your garage, with a motorcycle that is pleasant to look at and find".
At this point, Site only criticizes the Street Triple RS for one thing: its dull colors. Gray or black (no white or red, let alone chewy "Granny Smith" green as it was on the very first Street), the top-of-the-range model even sees its rear buckle painted in metallic silver, so that the R benefits from a much sportier red tint! "What The Flute?"
Nevertheless, we have to admit that we never tire of detailing all the parts that make up this very high standard machine: from the angled valves to the adjustable levers (spacing but also center distance for the brake!) Including the aluminum frame. carefully welded and the cute little crankcases, without forgetting of course the new dashboard…
Young customers are likely to appreciate the large 5-inch color TFT screen which displays all the information possible and imaginable (with the exception of tire pressure perhaps, reread our technical point). The oldest will also like it because the main data is entered in bulk.
All will praise the ease of navigation in the menu thanks to the mini joystick located under the turn signals control. That’s good, because Site begins testing the Street Triple RS in cold and wet conditions: in two stages, three movements, our opener shows us how to select the "Rain" mode of the engine … "Off we go!
