Triumph completely revises its mid-size roadsters for the new year 2017. First (top) model to pass between the gloves of Site: the Street Triple 765 RS, more powerful, more sophisticated, more "race" and more expensive than the R versions and S… Test !

The driving position on the new Street Triple RS is in line with the previous models: wide and slightly curved handlebars, rather narrow tank given its capacity of 17.4 liters, fairly high and set back footrests which tilt naturally – but not overly – the pilot forward.

The saddle positioned 825 mm from the ground prevents small riders from placing both feet on the ground. Adults are therefore a little better served: deep, wide and fairly flat, the seat provides a semblance of comfort by distributing the load better on the buttocks and slightly bending the knees..

A slight stroke of the pelvis is enough to straighten the light bike and the side stand is stored with an intuitive kick of the heel. Still without a lug, the side is on the other hand less easy to deploy: the pilot must go and find it behind the footrest, with the front of the boot. It’s a kick – to take !

Another helping hand, this time – which will be necessary from time to time: that of a friend, to maintain his chain in the absence of a central stand. The Triumph dealer will not fail to offer the workshop stand which is in the accessory section, "of course"…

Press the big starter and the engine wakes up … Thrown into a courtyard of a building, it is likely to wake up the whole neighborhood: without reaching the din of some Italians, the little English girl has a voice! Sports motorcycle enthusiasts will love it, their neighbors a little less.

The whistle of the "Tripeul" is reduced in 2017, but is certainly not erased. It remains undoubtedly too present for those who did not appreciate the noise of the turbine of the previous Streets. A few shots of gas can console them, partially: the serious sound of the pot and the hoarse tone of the admission past 5500 rpm are exhilarating. Inflated to 765 cc, the engine has fortunately lost none of its liveliness. It already smells of arson…

For Le Journal moto du Net, however, the discovery of the Street Triple RS is a very slow process: the rain and the coolness of the night force us to ride on a wet and cold road. Conditions that highlight the roundness, rather unexpected, of the sporty roadster of Triumph…

The precision of the electronic accelerator, the smoothness of the clutch control (antidribble) and the extreme flexibility of the engine which accepts to go down and start again under 2000 rev / min in sixth work wonders. The relevance of the "Rain" driving mode is almost called into question. !

By engaging this "rain" mode, however, the strongly smoothed accelerations on the first half of the tachometer (red zone at 12,500 rpm) allow you to drive in complete relaxation. Bikers who have just bought their "dear" mount will not risk being unsettled during their first turns of the wheel. But be careful, because the engine power remains "full" !

"Full" adjustable and set by Triumph for road use when leaving the factory, the suspensions behave extremely well in these delicate conditions: the mass transfers are executed very smoothly, even when a journalist is a little curious seeks to test the ABS and traction control which shine by their discretion.

On an incredible series of speed bumps – ten, but why ?! -, Site clears obstacles faster and faster. Conclusion: we worry about the mechanics long before suffering from the wrists or lower back. The quality of the Showa fork and Ohlins shock absorber can be felt from the first kilometers.

More surprisingly, the front brake is not too brutal. Contrary to what one might fear, the large monobloc calipers intended for heavy braking on the track are very civilized and allow the motorcycle to be slowed down peacefully in town. On the road, lever control is just as easy.

The rear brake pedal is a little hard but we still manage to manage the attitude of the bike. Le Journal moto du Net had to insist with the right foot before blocking the rear wheel, proof that the rear brake is well calibrated … and that the grip of the Diablo Supercorsa SP is not bad on a wet surface. !

Originally mounted in a "racing" Pirelli, the Street Triple RS does not encourage you to take an angle in the rain: the grooves are far too weak to inspire confidence and it is at a standstill that MNC scrolls through. the turns under the lenses of the photographers.

In the stretches, however, it is possible to accelerate fully on the intermediate gears and brake copiously without the electronic crutches being activated! It should be noted that the roads, impregnated with water at the very beginning of our route, gradually dry out and provide remarkable grip despite their shiny appearance..

Attacking the Catalunya circuit !

The rise in air temperature – which can be monitored with a quick glance at the dashboard – is suddenly accelerated by the appearance of the sun. This corresponds precisely to our arrival on the Catalunya circuit where we will be able to exploit the potential of the motorcycle … or more humbly, try to exploit !

During the first 15-minute session, Site takes the time to acclimatize to the layout, the relief of which is more pronounced than it seems on the PlayStation 4! Much weaker than in Phillip Island, the slap of the circuit used each year by MotoGP is still noticeable, on the top of our Shoei X-spirit III…

In the very first turns, we must admit that the Street Triple RS was a little unsettling: after a morning spent straight like an "i" on wet roads, the machine seemed a little too inclined to dive towards the rope. Very quickly, fortunately, this liveliness is not only integrated but appreciated !

Once placed on the corner, the Street eagerly devours the beautiful curves to the right, numerous on the Catalan circuit. As the turns, MNC goes faster and faster and ends up touching the tip of his boot which does not, however, protrude from the masses of the footrest … But it is not the ground clearance who restrains us the most.

If Le Journal moto du Net does not dare to attack harder, especially in the magnificent third corner, it is because of the wide and fairly high handlebars, which swings a little too much in the bumps. The feeling of losing control of the front axle – and the dread of losing it, quite simply! – encourages us not to go faster in certain fast sections.

In the exits of turns, on the other hand, the rear axle seems imperturbable. The new swingarm and its shock absorber transmit to the ground, without ever flinching, all the power of the Triple. The latter tumbles quickly in "Sport" mode and instantly in "Track" mode, but never suddenly..

Better filled than the 675 in the mid-revs, the 765 tows convincingly on the road from 5500 rpm (regime where the 3-cylinder starts to hiss!) But pulls really hard on the arms past 8000 rpm . On the track, we therefore do not go lower, at the risk of finding the revival "relatively" soft…

Nasty in high revs, the 3-cylinder requires the pilot to move forward against the tank in order to weigh on the front axle. Let the wheel rise a little too much and the traction control reduces engine power, considering that the rear starts to slip (the RS does not have an inertial unit).

To quickly build up gears, the quickshifter is very efficient. This is no surprise: Site had already adopted it on the road because it works just as well at low speed and low throttle in town, as at full load on the circuit. Just be careful not to accidentally touch the selector…

In this case, in fact, the system hesitates to upshift and chooses to keep the same: the engine suddenly resumes all its turns, which is not without surprising the rider and, if the motorcycle has the misfortune to be on the angle, is also not without upsetting the rear tire. The comma left by MNC in his underwear in the fourth bend attests…

The Street Triple RS has nothing to overcome the small chain of mid-course or the new final chicane, quite the contrary: the slight increase in the hunting angle goes almost unnoticed, as does the loss of two kilograms..

Thanks to its handlebars, the lever arm of the handlebars is much more important than on a Daytona 675 (no Daytona 765 on the program by the way, for lack of sufficient sales volume) … Handicap in the straight line where the Street reaches 240 km / h at full six, the roadster’s handlebars become useful when gripping the brakes.

Tired of the monstrous braking of Formula One cars – and trucks! -, the tarmac at the end of the two main straights is copiously bumpy so that the ABS, even in "Track" driving mode, is triggered on tough braking.

Roadster - Test Street Triple 765 RS: the super sport roadster from Triumph - Page 2 - The Street Triple 765 is ready to RS

The interventions of the ABS are fortunately very stealthy and only very slightly lengthen the braking distance: the amateurs pilots – of strong sensations but not too much – will not need to disconnect the system. The pilots, the real ones, will be able to do it thanks to the customizable "Rider" mode.

The front brake is finely dosed, very powerful and perfectly enduring: we expected no less from Brembo M50 calipers and their master cylinder (set to "21" by MNC for a firmer and more direct feel) as well. only their braided hoses !

As after any good "track day", the return to the House the hotel is by road. By the highway in this case, on which MNC calculates that the Street Triple RS takes 20 km / h at 1000 rpm on sixth gear (same for the S and R which share the same gears) .

To get home as quickly as possible, before the night and the freshness fall, our opener stalls at 140 km / h "counter". The engine purrs at 7000 rpm, but the rider grumbles a bit because of the slight crackling that goes through the handlebars and levers. This point will need to be improved on the hypothetical RT road version !

Just before handing over the keys to their owner, Site takes a quick look at the storage space under the seat cowl: phew, we can slip the regulatory yellow vest there! Unquestionably "Ready to race", the Street Triple 765 RS is also ready to roll on French roads … "See you soon?!"
