San Marino GP - First MotoGP victory for Morbidelli at the 2020 MotoGP San Marino GP -

Franco Morbidelli won at 25 his first MotoGP victory in front of the 10,000 spectators exceptionally authorized to attend the 2020 San Marino GP. The Italian-Brazilian rider won alone ahead of Francesco Bagnaia, Joan Mir and Valentino Rossi, while Fabio Quartararo falls twice… Report and results.

Fabio Quartararo on Yamaha in Spain, Andrea Dovizioso on Ducati in Austria, Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira on KTM in the Czech Republic and Austria, then Franco Morbidelli on his M1 this Sunday in Italy: never had the championship known so many winners on different motorcycles in just six races since its inception in 1949 !

Perfect illustration of the popular saying "when the cat is not there, the mice dance": the premier class has never been so contested as in the absence of Marc Marquez, sidelined by his arm injury . Honda is paying a high price, however: Nakagami is the first driver on RCV at Misano in 9th place. Alex Marquez, for his part, extends his subscription to the "rear posts" with 17th place in the Italian race on the world champion motorcycle…

Conversely, things are improving for Yamaha: the crest of Iwata wins a resounding victory at the San Marino GP thanks to Franco Morbidelli, after monopolizing the first four places in qualifying for the first time since the Portuguese GP in 1988! The M1 factories and private companies offered a recital on the Adriatic coast, but not that…

Ducati and Suzuki also stand out in Misano thanks to Francesco Bagnaia and Joan Mir, respectively 2nd and 3rd at the finish. The two young Italian pilots are ahead of the child of the country by a short head: Valentino Rossi, whose new helmet decoration recommends a Viagra derivative in the form of a "double dose at 46 mg" of Misano to stay on top !

The highlights of the 2020 San Marino GP

At the start, Franco Morbidelli went full throttle on his private Yamaha – in theory the least efficient of the four entered – ahead of Valentino Rossi and Jack Miller, who followed in the wake of Japanese motorcycles on his Ducati ahead of Viñales, Quartararo and Rins.

Johann Zarco appears in 10th position on his Ducati Avintia in front of the Honda of Takaaki Nakagami, the only LCR rider today because of the declared unfit to race because of the condition of his arm: the Englishman had fluid that s’ flowed from his freshly operated wounds…

Valentino Rossi – in medium tires – vainly seeks the opening on his protege – who started in hard-medium. But "Franky" rushes headlong, maintaining quite easily a comfortable gap on his elder brother: the n ° 21 is clearly determined to shine in front of his home crowd, for the first time allowed to attend a MotoGP race this season. !

Fabio Quartararo, relegated 1.6 seconds from his teammate, goes on the offensive with 21 laps to go: the young Frenchman overtakes Viñales … and loses the front in turn 4 – a tight right – a few moments later ! First mistake for the championship leader, who considered himself lucky with his position after having scored only 20 points in his last three races…

Fabio manages to start again on his M1 in 20th place, while Alex Rins and Franco Bagnaia sound the charge: the Suzuki and Ducati riders easily get rid of Viñales, who appears as usual struggling after having largely dominated qualifying.

18 laps from the finish, Morbidelli widened the gap over Rossi: his lead reached one second then stabilized at 1.5 seconds. The two Yamas are about half a second ahead of Miller’s Ducati. Rins gently climbs back onto the Ducati to steal 3rd place, with Bagnaia and Mir on his heels.

The Suzuki official wasted no time in overtaking the Australian on braking: Rins had an advantage of around half a second over Miller, who was then passed by his teammate Bagnaia! Next step for n ° 42: close the 1.7 sec gap between him and Rossi for second place…

Race to forget for Fabio Quartararo !

Fabio Quartararo returned to the pits then set off again with nine laps to go, when Alex Rins and "Pecco" Bagnaia made the junction with Valentino Rossi. Suzuki starts looking for an opening on Doctor’s Yamaha, as leader Morbidelli increased his lead to 2.7 seconds.

But things are not going fast enough for Bagnaia: the Italian – dazzling for his return from injury – taxes Rins with authority and in turn comes to tease Rossi: the No.63 succeeds with seven laps to go , placing his Ducati inside the Yamaha in an unstoppable interior.

Meanwhile, a twist: Fabio Quartararo goes to the mat again, this time in turn 6! Two falls in the same race for "El Diablo", which sees its leadership in the standings soar in favor of the discreet Dovizioso … The Frenchman is joined a few laps later in the gravel by Esteve Rabat on his Ducati Avintia.

The last lap reveals all the talent of Joan Mir: the n ° 36 manages to get rid of his teammate Alex Rins before falling on Valentino Rossi by teasing the 60 ° incline! Mir joined then passed Rossi from the inside in a right: the n ° 46, author of several errors, saw his place on the podium slip out in front of a majority acquired to his cause !

The finish is extremely close: Bagnaia, Mir and Rossi cross the line half a second apart, ie three different motorcycles at the forefront (Yamaha, Ducati and Suzuki). Alex Rins, 5th, was four seconds behind the leader, while the following Maverick Viñales was 5.383 seconds behind. Andrea Dovizioso, 6th, is no less than 10.358 seconds behind !

Johann Zarco records for his part an anonymous 15th position between Iker Lecuona and Danilo Petrucci: the n ° 5 finishes the race 20.152 seconds from the winner, while the manager of his team Avintia has already announced the end of their collaboration end of 2020…

The point (s) in the championship

The first place in the provisional classification escapes Fabio Quartararo following this white result in Italy: the young French talent cedes the controls to Andrea Dovizioso and concedes him six lengths (76 points against 70). Note that neither one nor the other exerts real domination: "El Diablo" like "DesmoDovi" alternate good results and empty passages…

Jack Miller, third in the provisional, is generally more consistent failing to win races. The Australian is followed by Joan Mir, who climbs to 4th place ahead of Maverick Viñales thanks to his third place in Misano, his second podium this season..

Valentino Rossi, 6th in the provisional, remains at the top of the table despite his frustrating engine failure in Jerez (Spain) which is to date the only false note of his 2020 season: the nine-time world champion has only one podium. (in Andalusia) but rarely finishes far from the leading men. Like today in Misano…

His protege Franco Morbidelli – from his VR46 Academy branch – took advantage of his first victory to propel himself to 7th place in the provisional general, despite his two white results in Andalusia and then in Austria.

The 25-year-old Italian-Brazilian rider, 2017 Moto2 world champion, arrived in MotoGP in 2018 on the Honda Marc VDS, a motorcycle for which he never found the instructions (15th). Passed into the fold of Yamaha, he finished tenth in 2019: difficult for him because a certain Fabio Quartararo sparks the same year in the Petronas-SRT team..

More consistent this year, Franky took a nice second place in the Czech Republic GP before securing his first home success in Misano. Of a calm and reserved nature, the n ° 21 does not let escape any explosion of joy: the teammate of Fabio jubilates while restraint. Only his sparkling gaze betrays his joy at winning the cup in premier class !

In the constructors’ standings below, Yamaha remains in first place with 113 points against 107 for Ducati, 88 for KTM and 73 for Suzuki. Honda, second to last in front of Aprilia, has scored just 53 points in six races. Even more worrying: the HRC is last in the team standings with 15 points against 127 for Petronas-SRT !

The MotoGP riders remain on the Adriatic coast this week because a second race takes place next Sunday on the same circuit: the unprecedented Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna, on this track which offers a lot of grip – despite a few bumps – thanks to its recent resurfacing. To be followed of course in priority on MNC: stay connected !
