Riders explain themselves after the 2020 MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix
After Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha SRT), Andrea Dovizioso (official Ducati), Brad Binder (official KTM) and Miguel Oliveira (KTM Tech3), Franco Morbidelli (Yamaha SRT) is the fifth different rider to win a MotoGP race since the start of this very strange season 2020… Statements by pilots and team managers.
Winner: Franco Morbidelli, Yamaha SRT (7th in the championship)
"I feel like this week has been magical for me. Everything has gone well so I thought maybe something good would be possible in the race. And it turns out that it was something. awesome! I’ve never won a home world championship race before so doing it in MotoGP is the greatest achievement of my life. I’m really proud to say that. I want to thank everyone who work with me because this victory is the result of teamwork. I am very proud of what we have achieved, not only today but in general. Seven years ago I was racing here with a stock 600, now I’m winning a MotoGP race. It’s just amazing, especially since it’s the first race with a crowd this year. It was great to be able to wave to the crowd after the race. We do that for them, so celebrating this victory with them was a great feeling ".

2nd: Pecco Bagnaia, Ducati Pramac (14th in the championship)
"When I arrived in Misano my goal was only to finish the race. Saturday during FP3, as I focused on my driving, I understood that I could attack and that my feeling was the same as in Jerez . The start of the race was not very good, I lost a few places and had to catch up on Mir. When I passed him, I saw that I could join the leading group . I wasn’t thinking about my leg but only about the possibility of my first MotoGP podium in my home race with the fans! I was in pain for the last four laps, but today we deserved this podium. would like to thank my team, Ducati and the VR46RidersAcademy for their great support. Today this podium is for them and I can’t wait to be back on this track! "
3rd: Joan Mir, official Suzuki (4th in the championship)
"I’m really happy. I wasn’t as strong here as in Austria, but I’m still on the podium so that’s good news. I really enjoyed the end of the race, it was exciting to make this last pass! (at Rossi’s expense, editor‘s note). I knew I could do it in this corner so I was confident. I was aware that I would have a little trouble in the first laps with the tire new, but my pace with the worn tire was much faster and I felt good with the bike, so I managed to take advantage of it. We will be working Tuesday for the test and be ready for next weekend. ".
4th: Valentino Rossi, official Yamaha (6th in the championship)
"It’s a shame, because getting on the podium is always special but even more so here in Misano. Also, sharing the podium with Franco and Pecco would have been like a race at the ranch! I made a small mistake and Mir made was really strong then, he had some really good lap times in the last part of the race. He managed to beat me with only 2 km to go. But it was still a good race and a good weekend because I rode well. We had a very good pace and I feel good with the bike. So even without a podium, I liked it. It was a good weekend for our team and for me because we were always competitive. It’s very important. I think we can improve three or four things for next week and I’m even happier to be able to try my luck again ".
5th: Alex Rins, official Suzuki (12th in the championship)
“The race was difficult for me today. In the first part I felt confident and had a good pace and a good feeling with the bike. When I saw the podium approaching, I really gave myself all the way and started to have strength issues in my right arm from my shoulder injury so it was very hard to keep fighting. During the last laps I was just trying to resist and to get a good position. I’m happy with my fifth place because the points are good, but I certainly hope to have more next time. ".
6th: Maverick Viñales, official Yamaha (5th in the championship)
“I don’t know what happened today. I’m really disappointed. I don’t know why I lost the grip in the race. I tried everything I could but I wasn’t getting enough tire feedback. At the end of the race I did three or four very good laps, but it was too late. We will work on it. We have a test here on Tuesday, we will try to stay relaxed. to start again from a blank page next weekend. We know that we are fast here, so we can aim for a start in the front row ".
7th: Andrea Dovizioso, official Ducati (1st in the championship)
"It was a tough race and as I was starting from a distance I had to fight a lot at the start to find the pace. I still can’t be as competitive as I would like with these tires … The riding style which I have always adopted in recent years does not currently work. Fortunately, Tuesday we have a day of testing here in Misano, which will be very important to try to resolve this point. The championship is weird this year and now we are back in top of the standings. You have to see the positive side and keep working, making every effort to come back stronger in the next races. I congratulate Pecco on his good performance today ".
8th: Jack Miller, Ducati Pramac (3rd in the championship)
“It was a tough race. I tried to do my best, I started really well but then I struggled a bit and in the end my pace was not great. We have some work to do so far. see you next week, but we’ll be ready for the next race ".
9th: Takaaki Nakagami, Honda LCR (9th in the championship)
"Today was a pretty positive race for us, because yesterday and Friday we were wasting time and we didn’t have a good enough performance in qualifying. 14th on the starting grid is not good for the race. But with the new starting system, we made good progress at the start and during the race the lap times were fairly constant, around 33.1 or 2. This morning we had the best time in the warm up in 32 and it was really good for the team. In the race we couldn’t do it, so you have to understand what happened between the warm up and the race. It’s a new top 10 and we’ll have to see how we can progress for the next race, but I think we can fight for the podium again. We are looking forward to this weekend with another race in Misano, we will stay positive and we will continue to work hard to get that first podium ".
10th: Pol Espargaro, official KTM (11th in the championship)
“Not much to say today. From the first lap I struggled to brake from the rear and got stuck behind Johann Zarco for quite a long time. It wasn’t really safe to overtake him cleanly and was only able to do it when the pace dropped and the others caught up with me. We paid a little for Saturday’s mistakes and we need to fix our problems before next weekend. I’m sure we can do it and we can have a better race ".
15th: Johann Zarco, Ducati Avintia (13th in the championship)
- To be continued on MNC: stay connected !
Retirement: Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha SRT (2nd in the championship)
Statements by team managers
Razlan Razali (Yamaha SRT team)
“This is the best weekend yet for the Petronas Sepang Racing Team as a team. Franco’s fantastic victory is well deserved, especially given his crash in the first race in Austria. Winning his Grand Home price is amazing! It’s a shame for Fabio, he crashed trying to catch up with the first ones but he is still second in the championship so it’s not too bad and I’m sure he will come back stronger in the week next ".
Davide Brivio (official Suzuki team)
“We are very happy to get another podium. It was great to see our two GSX-RRs at the forefront keeping a really competitive pace. I think with better positions on the starting grid we would have was able to achieve even better results. Joan recovered very well and had a great last lap to get a deserved podium. Alex also had a very good race with an incredible pace until the problem with his arm so he was also impressive. We will try to keep that competitive for next weekend. Thanks to the whole team for their hard work. "
Massimo Meregalli (official Yamaha team)
"We knew that this race would be difficult and that the tires would play a decisive role. We were hoping to fight for the victory today, but unfortunately it was not possible. Valentino got off to a good start and his pace was really good all over. throughout the race. It’s a shame he couldn’t get on the podium as it would have been such a treat for the team and the fans. But the way he rode is encouraging so he Will definitely try to fight ahead next time around. What happened for Maverick before the race was a little unsettling as we saw smoke coming out of his bike when he got to the starting grid. did a thorough check and it turned out everything was fine, but the race was tough for him. He didn’t feel as good with the hard tire today as he did earlier in the weekend. is really disappointing because we know its speed. But we have another chance the week do next. We will use the experience of today and test new parts on Tuesday, so we will do everything to come back stronger ".
Mike Leitner, official KTM team
“We had better results. The fact that the boys did not manage to make a quick lap in qualifying made it difficult for them to get closer to the leading group, because the pace of the drivers is very close. races we are not very happy with these results but the pace of the race was positive. All four drivers fought well in their respective battles and brought in some points, especially Iker who received a long lap penalty. will do all we can to be better next weekend ".
Herve Poncharal, KTM Tech3 team
“Overall it’s a pretty good result for the team. Of course, we didn’t expect to replicate Spielberg’s incredible and unforgettable victory here, but it was an interesting circuit for us. 12 seconds from the winner but we lost 6 seconds in the first two laps so that means on the remaining 25 laps we lost six seconds which shows how tight the level is. We could see that the KTM riders are really good, because the four turned in the same lap. Miguel Oliveira was sandwiched between Pol Espargaro and Brad Binder at the finish line. We got some good points and now we have to understand what we can improve on this circuit, but I want to see the glass half full. We are not too far away and we can do better next weekend. The championship is very open, which is also very interesting. We are 28 points behind the leader for the time being, so we have to stay focused, keep believing and attacking. Iker had a slightly more eventful race. He stalled on the grid which doesn’t happen very often and he wasn’t sure what to do. He returned to the grid when he should have started from the pit lane. Then he got a long lap penalty which he did really well. He wasted no time, he put his head down and he managed to finish 14th, which is really impressive. For most of the race he was the fastest at KTM, with the best lap times. I think we can be proud of our four KTM riders, and as Tech3s we can be proud of Miguel and Iker. We must continue to work hard and follow the same method, in addition to always improving ourselves and getting closer to the leaders. I believe we can do it and it is a story that I can tell you in a few days, because we are staying here in Misano ".
