Motorcycle video: Marquez wins the Superprestigio Dirt Track 2016
Marc Marquez has just won the grand final of the Superprestigio Dirt Track, contested on Saturday evening in Barcelona (Spain). The two-time winner of the event and American specialist in the discipline, Brad Baker, finished third behind an impressive Toni Elias.
Winner of five Grands Prix this season – only? – but, Marc Marquez offered himself a sixth victory in 2016: the Honda rider largely dominated the fourth edition of the Superprestigio Dirt Track, winning the four races contested in front of a crowd of 8,900 spectators.
Starting from pole position (12.054 seconds to cover the 200 m of track set up in the Palau Sant Jordi arena in Barcelona), the MotoGP world champion only battled in the first lap to take control of the grand final Saturday night (see the best moments in video below), before heading for a relentless victory… !
Another Spaniard also stood out: Toni Elias, first Moto2 world champion and new star of the American Superbike championship! Unable to raise his Suzuki n ° 24 to the level of the Honda n ° 93, the "Scud Missile" – explicit nickname which it owes to the quadruple AMA SBK champion, Josh Hayes himself – on the other hand dominated a US size of the discipline. Aye Caramba !
2013 AMA Flat Track champion Brad Baker was reportedly penalized by poor tire choice (see statements at the bottom of the page), but “The Bullet” still climbs onto the final podium. Victorious in the Superprestigio Dirt Track in 2013 and 2015, the young American – born February 18, 1993 – is joined by the young Marquez – born February 18, 1993 -, winner in 2014 and 2016 therefore.
The organizers have already given an appointment on December 16, 2017 for the 5th edition: Marc and Brad have blocked the date to fight for a third victory … But a certain Nicky (Hayden, "who else?") Could complicate their task. ! With a knee injury, the "Kentucky Legend" was unable to race this year but hopes to participate – and win? – in the years to come.
Finally, note that in the Open category, won this time by Brad Baker, Thomas Chareyre climbed to the third step of the podium. The five-time Supermoto S1 world champion was not the only French representative in Barcelona: his comrade Sylvain Bidart and the ten-time (!) World champion Vincent Philippe were also present.
Pilot statements
1st: Marc Marquez (Honda)
“I came very close to winning last year, and this year I got it. I knew the mistakes I had made, and this time I tried a new approach that worked well. C is my second Superprestigio Dirt Track victory, but this edition was the most contested! I’m so happy with this result but Toni (Elias) ‘s pace was awesome! I think each of us had extra pressure and it ‘that’s why some fell during the first rounds. I’m happy that Simon, Cardus and Cecchini are all doing well! It’s a party and most importantly! ".
2nd: Toni Elias (Suzuki)
“I didn’t expect to get to the Superfinal, and I have to thank my team. We made the right tire choice at the right time. It was a perfect day, I managed to keep up the pace in the Superfinal and that second place almost sounds like a win! Every time I tried to get closer to Marc he would answer tit for tat, showing that he is the big boss in this arena. Kudos to the organization for putting it in. place of such a fantastic spectacle! "
3rd: Brad Baker (Honda)
“Tire choice was crucial. The track surface was abrasive and these very soft tires wear out really quickly. I figured with 16 laps to go I will need a lot of rubber and that was a bad decision. I had a lot of fun, although the result is not what I expected! I did not feel comfortable on the track and honestly I was much more nervous during this event than in my Flat Track Championship in the United States. I want to thank everyone in the organization for their wonderful work. Thanks to them, the Dirt Track comes out of the United States and becomes international! "
