More electronics for the 2018 Yamaha R1 and R1M
The Yamaha R1 – endurance world champion with the GMT94 – evolves in small steps in 2018 thanks to the standard adoption of a double-acting shifter on the standard version and even more advanced electronic suspensions on the R1M. Presentation.
Among the many new 2018 models exhibited by Yamaha at the EICMA show in Milan, some captivated visitors: notably the spectacular 3-wheeler, the salivating trail prototype or even the developments made to bestsellers such as the and the, now available in "" with suitcases, TFT screen and heated handles as standard.

Passed unnoticed in the general jubilation, other Yamaha motorcycles nevertheless exhibited some discreet changes: this is the case of the bewitching R1 – big winner of our – which receives a new engine mapping and especially a bidirectional shifter allowing to go up and down reports without disengaging.
Appeared in MotoGP, this system takes place for the first time as standard on a Japanese sports motorcycle: and say that some of its compatriots – like the standard GSX-R1000 and CBR1000RR – still lack a "simple" shifter! By the way, the anti-abrasion of the 2018 R1 would gain in sensitivity for more transparency when it comes into action.
The technical characteristics of the 2018 R1 are identical to the previous one: it retains its very vigorous 200 hp "Crossplane" engine, its ultra-precise cycle part, its advanced electronics (traction control, anti-wheeling, driving modes, inertial unit, color TFT display, etc.). All for a weight contained at 199 kg, thanks in part to its rear buckle and its magnesium rims.
R1M 2018: the ultimate in Ohlins electronic suspension
"Luxurious" version derived from the standard R1, the R1M differs from it by its even more extensive electronic equipment – on-board telemetry, in particular – its carbon fairings (!) And its Ohlins suspensions whose hydraulic calibration is adjusted in time. real electronically.
This damping is changing for 2018 with a new power plant, called "Smart EC 2 ERS", which Yamaha describes as "the most advanced system ever developed by Ohlins for a production motorcycle". This device would in particular be more precise and responsive during braking and acceleration phases, but also during cornering. Better everywhere, in short !
The 2018 R1M also receives all the evolutions of the standard model, including the double-acting shifter and the new engine mapping presented above. Like the previous vintages, its distribution will be in limited quantities and will go through a reservation system via a from November 27, 2017.
Note that the colors are identical to the 2017 models: only the colors and graphics have changed slightly. The R1 "short" is available in black or blue while the R1M is only offered in blue-carbon gray. Given their improvements, their prices – unknown to date – will logically increase: for the record, the R1 2017 was already exchanged for a – big – check of € 18,399 when the R1M was close to € 24,000 (€ 23,799 ) !
