The CBR champions Superbike at the Tourist Trophy
John McGuinness won last Saturday in the Superbike race of the Tourist Trophy 2011. Record man of the lap since 2009, he obtains his 16th victory in the TT and ahead of three other Honda riders: Donald, Johnson and Amor. God save the Fireblade !
The late Joey Dunlop’s record – 26 victories in the Tourist Trophy in all categories! – is still a long way off, the fact remains that McGuinness is even more part of the Isle of Man racing legend by winning at 39 a 16th victory.
"I am speechless … I have the impression of dreaming", admitted, getting off his Fireblade, the driver of the aptly named Team Honda TT Legends! The "Number One" of Snaefell Mountain completed the six laps of the course, more than 360 km, in 1 hour 46 minutes 13 seconds and 10 hundredths exactly.
But on this mythical event, the British prefer to express themselves in average speed: 127,870 miles per hour for the incredible McGuinness, or 205,787 km / h on our side of the Channel … A more telling figure, isn’t it ?
"At the start, it looked like the race was going to be super tight. Bruce (Anstey, Editor’s note) was pushing really hard and we lost a bit of time," said the driver. Fortunately, his team had a very interesting asset: experience in Endurance, therefore in refueling. !
Fifth in the last Bol d’Or with the # 77 CBR driven by McGuinness, Plater and Amor (read our), the official Honda team handled John’s two stops wonderfully, allowing him to dominate New Zealand’s Bruce Anstey (41 years on the clock!) Then the star Guy Martin (read).
With his two opponents having to retire in the third and fifth rounds respectively, McGuinness was able to afford to roll into the sixth and final loop, edging Australia’s Cameron Donald by almost a minute..
"It was tiring but I must say that Endurance races are really paying off when it comes to the health of the bike", adds the winner of the SBK category who will also participate in the Supersport event on a CBR600RR of the Padgetts team.
Englishman Gary Johnson and McGuinness teammate Keith Amor round out the Honda CBR1000RR quartet! At the foot of the podium, Keith must be congratulated: "it was hard: even more than the Bol d’Or when I thought I would never endure something harder", remarks the Scot with the dislocated shoulder last Thursday and plagued by gearbox issues during the race !
Michael Dunlop – son of Robert and nephew of Joey both missing in the race – finished in fifth place at the controls of his Kawasaki ZX-10R. The Northern Irish Ninja – just 23 years old – finishes just ahead of two other Honda’s: that of Daniel Stewart and that of his brother William Dunlop.
So the CBR1000RR, queen of the Superbike? In Great Britain certainly! In addition to its domination on the Isle of Man over the past three years, the Fireblade also works very well in British Superbike: crowned with Ryuichi Kiyonari in 2006, 2007 and 2010, it currently leads the BSB 2011 with Shane Byrne.
In the World Superbike, however, the situation is more delicate: fourth last year with Jonathan Rea, the winged Superbike is for the moment only sixth with the same Johnny and 16th with Ruben Xaus … We cannot be in front everywhere. , if ?!
