TT Zero 2017 video: McGuinness and Martin test the new Mugen
John McGuinness and Guy Martin line up in 2017 on the new Honda CBR1000RR SP2 in the Superbike category of the Tourist Trophy. But the two riders will also participate in the TT Zero with the electric motorcycles Shinden Roku of the preparer Mugen. They just tried them…
The two official – and star – Honda riders at the Tourist Trophy 2017, and recently tested the Shingen Roku, the all-new model of electric racing motorcycle based on the Shingen Go which won the TT Zero Challenge last year ( video at the end of the article).
Since 2012, Mugen Motosports, the car and motorcycle preparer created in 1973 by Hirotoshi Honda – the son of Soichiro! – and his partner Maso Kimura, align their machines designed in collaboration with the Tokyo firm on the Isle of Man "zero carbon, zero toxic emission" motorcycle race.
Classified – carried away a year ago by cancer, the American had won the first four editions of the TT Zero Challenge – during their first two outings, the Mugen Shingen won the next three editions and intend to continue their momentum in 2017.
According to Guy Martin, "The internal combustion engine has had its day"
In addition to the victory, the Mugen team led by Akihiro Miyata is once again aiming for an average 120 mph on the Moutain Course: for the first time in 2016, the event (a 60 km lap) was completed less quickly than the year previous, mainly the fault of poor handling of John McGuinness on his motorcycle.
McGuinness’s 2016 Mugen teammate Bruce Anstey led the Shingen Go to victory, racing the Moutain Course at a respectable 118.416 mph, not far from the record set by (119.279 mph).
For information, the absolute lap record – on Superbike machines, which complete six laps per race and pass twice at the pump – was improved last year: Michael Dunlop had approached the bar of 140 mph on the handlebars of his BMW S1000RR (133.962 mph exactly, or 215.591 km / h).
John’s new teammate, Guy Martin, is a big fan of "internal combustion" engines: he owns the 27-liter, 1600-horsepower V12 that powered the Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancasters, etc.! However, the eccentric pilot – mechanic – TV host is convinced that the electric motor represents the future (read his statement below). When will an electric motorcycle be faster than a thermal? ?
Statements by Mugen pilots
John McGuinness:
"My first impression is that the bike is very good. It is really thin. The aerodynamics have changed. The bubble is bigger, which will be better at high speed at the Isle of Man TT. I think the engine is looks a bit more powerful, and I like the position on the bike. Before, the bike looked big but now it feels smaller, and narrower. The brakes, the chassis, the suspensions, the steering, everything is good. It’s a shame I’m a little hurt, but I can’t wait to do the rest of the test. But she’s really good. I’m happy. ".
Guy Martin:
"It is nothing like what I have ridden in the past, and if you ask me what I want to change, I will answer you. I have to change. I have to take the bike as a constant and adapt my riding to get the most out of it. We don’t have gears to manage, we don’t have a clutch to manage. It’s a heavy motorcycle (248 kg, see the technical sheet below, Editor’s note) but it is Coming out great. I just need to recalibrate my brain to get the best out of it. But it’s only my first day, I’m still learning. I love it. It’s the future. The internal combustion engine did it. his time. That’s what will replace him. When? 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, I don’t know. ".
