Official: Alex Marquez on Lorenzo’s official Honda in 2020

End of the suspense over the award of the most coveted MotoGP handlebars for next year: the HRC chooses Moto2 world champion Alex Marquez to succeed Jorge Lorenzo on the official RC213V. The arrival of the Spanish forms a new duo of "Marquez" at Honda-Repsol, to the detriment by ricochet of Johann Zarco … Explanations. 

Marc Marquez will have decidedly won everything in 2019: the eight-time Grand Prix world champion dominated the MotoGP season on the helmet and backbone (12 victories, the last of which yesterday in Valencia) and will be joined next year by his younger brother, Alex, Moto2 world champion this year with the Marc VDS team !

The young Spaniard’s accession to the prestigious official Honda team follows a lively soap opera that began last Thursday with the announcement of the withdrawal of Jorge Lorenzo, who finally prefers to stop motorcycle racing at the age of 32 and therefore leaves his handlebars vacant for 2020 The announcement immediately sparked a war of nerves between Cal Crutchlow, Takaaki Nakagami, Johann Zarco and Alex Marquez, expected to succeed the Mallorcan.

Over the weekend, however, HRC’s intentions shifted sharply to the new Moto2 world champion, who also has the double advantage of being Spanish – an aspect appreciated by title sponsor Respsol – and of being the brother of the one who almost alone carries Honda to success. Other side of the coin for the HRC: if by chance the tone were to rise with one of the two brothers, this duo from Marquez could form a united front against their employer !

Honda hopes for Zarco end

The award of this place to Alex Marquez – who has a one-year contract – also puts an end to the hopes of the other three aforementioned drivers, including Johann Zarco who hoped either to bounce back at HRC instead of Lorenzo or at Honda. -LCR if Crutchlow or Nakagami was promoted in the official structure. Unfortunately, Johann’s efforts – supported by Claude Michy this weekend – did not bear fruit, despite his interesting potential demonstrated during his interim at LCR…

It is true that Alex Marquez – Moto3 world champion in 2014 – also has the advantage of youth (23 years against 29 for Zarco), in theory a pledge of a higher progression curve. Without forgetting the full support of his big brother who knows the RCV like the back of his hand for having taken him to the title six times since 2013! The loss of Johann’s forward on Sunday afternoon in Valencia also arguably did not plead in favor of the two-time Moto2 world champion either, even if the negotiations were probably almost finalized at that time….

Still, the tracks are drastically reduced for Johann, who now has three options: return to Moto2, convince Yamaha to hire him as a test rider (knowing that the manufacturer of Iwata did not appreciate his choice to dig for LCR …) or study the Ducati-Avintia offer. The Spanish private structure has indeed proposed a handlebars to No.5, which the latter has publicly dismissed for lack of competitiveness..

However, it is rumored that Ducati could increase its technical support to Avintia in order to make the offer more attractive to hire Johann Zarco. The prospect of recovering a Desmosedici 2019 – even 2020? – will she finally seduce the very swift Cannes pilot? ?
