Bayliss reacts, Toseland confirms … Foret flies over !
The second round of the World Superbike took place yesterday on the Phillip Island track. After an opening round dominated by the underdogs, we were waiting for the big comeback of champions Bayliss and Charpentier. Report and video interviews…
For this second meeting of the year, more than 63,000 spectators are present to see the Superbike and Supersport riders enjoy the superb Australian track, perched above the Indian Ocean. This very demanding circuit gives pride of place to piloting and taking initiative: the fight should be there !
And to keep the fans waiting, as a prelude to its promising races, the organizers are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Superbike World Championship. The opportunity to see glorious Australian drivers such as Rob Phillis, Peter Goddard, Kevin Magee, Aaron Slignt or even Fred Merkel, the very first world champion in the category !
At home, Troy Bayliss wants to prove that his poor performance in Qatar (read) was only a mishap. Beaten on the first day of testing by an extremely swift James Toseland, the Australian clocked a record time of 1 ‘31.887 on the second day. !
The weather was so good that during his Superpole lap, the Ducati rider was unable to go below (1 ‘32.145). Luckily for him, James Toseland was unable to beat his own time on Matchday 1 either, realizing his lap in 1 ‘32.198.

Behind these two men, the official Yamaha once again demonstrate their efficiency but know that good qualifications are necessary but not sufficient … Also present on the front row during the Qatari event, Corser and Haga will first of all have to select the right ones. tires, in order to go the whole distance !
The second place is led by Max Biaggi, somewhat disappointed but confident: "It’s true that I hoped for better, but the superpole is one thing, tomorrow’s races will be another", noted the Italian at the end of the qualifying sessions.
Fonsi Nieto on the handlebars of his ZX-10R is 6th while Max Neukirchner is in 7th place. The German will represent Suzuki’s second hope for the podium since Yukio Kagayama – the second official driver of the Alstare team – will not participate in the races, having suffered a heavy crash at the very start of testing..
Ruben Xaus closes the second row by placing his Ducati model 2006 two places in front of the 999 2007 of Lorenzo Lanzi. Between the two Italian divas is inserted the Ninja of Regis Laconi, 9th time of the Superpole. Then follow the two Australians Martin and Brookes on two Honda CBR1000RR, Fabrizio, Smrz and Rolfo.

In Supersport, Fabien Foret shows himself to be intractable: from the first day, the Kawasaki driver posted a superb time of 1 ‘35.166 that even the local driver Kevin Curtain could not beat the next day! The Honda Ten Kate follow closely behind, Sebastien Charpentier getting the better of the championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu.
In the second row we find the deserving Nanelli at the controls of his Ducati 749R, then Parkes, Veneman and Fujiwara. Yohann Tiberio signs a remarkable 9th time on his Honda, ahead of David Checa and Sebastien Gimbert of Team GMT94 who supervise Pere Riba and his little Ninja.
Gregory Leblanc places his CBR600RR of the Vazy Racing Team in 20th place, Matthieu Lagrive, replacing William De Angelis on the Yam Intermoto Czech is classified 26th and Julien Enjolras achieves the 31st time on the handlebars of his R6 Tati Team Beaujolais Racing.
First Superbike race
Max Biaggi is the quickest to start and takes the first turn in the lead. But the Italian was quickly overwhelmed by Toseland then Bayliss and Corser. The following lap, Corser passes in front of the reigning world champion while Noriyuki Haga passes in front of Max, already far from the top three..
Nieto, Laconi and Xaus follow the pace of the Japanese n ° 41 but the leaders are much faster: Toseland, Corser and Bayliss turn a second faster than their pursuers !
Set like clockwork, Toseland’s CBR1000RR lets Corser’s R1 and Bayliss’s 999 explain each other, but you have to wait for the 8th lap to see the Ducati overtake the Yamaha in the pit straight..
The battle is also raging between the second R1 driven by Haga and the Suzuki of Biaggi which obviously takes longer than its comrades to find its rhythm. The Roman Emperor wasted no time in overtaking a Nitro Nori again handicapped by the premature wear of its rear tire.
The observation is more obvious with his teammate Corser, forced to let Toseland and Bayliss escape, for lack of rear grip. With 7 seconds ahead of Max Biaggi, the poor Australian saw his lead melt away in less than 6 laps !
Biaggi therefore easily seized third place on the 20th lap while in front, Bayliss had to show more attack! Stayed under the Honda’s pots during the first 16 laps, Bayliss continuously puts pressure on the British who is resisting very well.
In the pin Honda, the famous n ° 21 even goes so far as to attempt an overtaking on the outside of n ° 52 who keeps the advantage. But in the next round, Troy applies more and surprises James – this time inside! – when braking the same sharp turn.
Then follows a demonstration by Bayliss, who flies to his first victory of the season! Toseland is second, far ahead of Biaggi. Corser is finally only 5th, doubled in the very last lap by his teammate Haga.
The disappointment is great in the French camp: classified 6th in the 9th round, Regis Laconi dominates Xaus, Nieto and Lanzi. But his rear tire rolled, the Mosellan could not subsequently avoid his fall in the standings and decided to give up in his 16th loop, while he turned 6 seconds slower than his direct competitors. !

Supersport Race
Despite a timid start, Sebastien Charpentier climbed second at the end of the first lap, in the wheel of Broc Parkes, while Fabien Foret let Curtain and Sofuoglu pass. Fujiwara is just behind the French, ahead of Checa, Nannelli, Veneman, Roccoli and Tiberio.
In the very first laps, the No. 16 Honda of Charpentier competed against the No. 23 Yamaha of Parkes, the two leaders having a slight advantage over Curtain and Sofuoglu. But very quickly, Parkes realizes that he can go faster and therefore decides to take the command..
Conversely, General Seb lost his rhythm and was automatically joined by his teammate Sofuoglu and Curtain. In the 5th lap, the Turkish and the Australian passed the French but couldn’t get rid of it. Fabien Foret meanwhile remains in ambush a few lengths.
In the lead, Parkes conscientiously sets up his laps and has a lead of more than 2 seconds at the halfway point! Behind the fight continues between Charpentier and Curtain but it is Foret who is the swiftest…
On the 11th lap, Fabien overtook Kenan Sofuoglu in the impressive downhill braking succeeding Lucky heights. Then in the next loop, it’s Kevin Curtain’s turn to be hit by a ZX-6R more comfortable at this stage of the race than his R6…
Sebastien Charpentier also did not resist the progress of the Ninja n ° 9 who found himself 2nd in the race less than 2 seconds from the leading CBR, while there were still 7 laps to go. !
Curtain for his part saw his performances continue to fall and the vice-world champion lost 8 places during the second half of the race. Unfortunately for him, David Checa did not have to wait until the end of the race to fall victim to this mysterious illness..
From the first laps, the Spaniard plummeted from 7th to 17th position before failing at 21st final place. Gianluca Nannelli having chosen the same rear fitment is victim of the same problem on his Ducati, just like Curtain, Charpentier but also Tiberio and soon Parkes !
In first position since the 4th lap, the official Yamaha rider could not stop Foret’s superb ascent: between the 14th and the 18th lap, the Charentais took 2 full seconds from his opponent and made short work of it, leading to its wake Kenan Sofuoglu.
Finishing his race on the hats of wheels too when others are struggling on their rear rim, the Turkish man manages a good second place but cannot return in time to Foret, who won the 10th victory of his career !
Behind the two sprinters, Parkes settles quietly on the 3rd place of the podium, Charpentier having lost more than 4 seconds in the space of 4 laps … Follow in a pocket handkerchief Fujiwara and Riba, then Harms, Veneman and Alfonsi.
Tiberio, Leblanc and Gimbert cross the finish line 10, 12 and 13th respectively, while Lagrive and Enjolras were forced to retire.
Sofuoglu therefore retains the lead in the championship ahead of Foret, who will arrive in Europe with good morale. Fujiwara is third ahead of Curtain, Riba, Harms and Parkes. Sebastien Charpentier scores his first points of the season and is in 9th position, impatiently awaiting the next event in Donington on April 1st !
On the manufacturer’s side, Honda leads with 45 points, ahead of Kawasaki (38 pts), Yamaha (36), Suzuki (15) and Ducati (8).

Second Superbike race
As in the first round, the fastest in the 400m standing start is Max Biaggi! But again, the Roman Emperor is too tender at the approach of the 2nd curve and Corser, Bayliss and Toseland take the opportunity to outflank him on both sides. !
At the first passage, Corser leads past Toseland and Bayliss. Xaus 4th in front of Biaggi, Haga, Laconi and Nieto is already 1 second behind the three leading men who fight like ragpickers.
But after 6 laps, and despite changes in settings and driving style to preserve his rear tire, Corser had to let Toseland and Bayliss go. Biaggi on the contrary climbs up and double blow after blow Laconi and Xaus.
In front, James Toseland may well do, Troy Bayliss remains "stuck to me like glue"As in the first heat, the Australian puts the maximum pressure on the Englishman. Troy considers – rightly – that James is looking to"save tires"and that makes the business of Biaggi, particularly fast.
On the 14th lap, bad luck swept away the only French hope since the Kawasaki n ° 55 came to a halt: Laconi gave up while he was in contact with Xaus and Lanzi for 6th place…
Watching Nitro Nori and Max’s comeback on the giant screens, Troy Bayliss plans to beat Toseland again in the very last laps. But it is without counting on the reserves of the young Briton who holds out until passing under the checkered flag !
The fight is very close for the last step of the podium: Haga wins with a tenth lead over Biaggi who himself caps Corser at the post! Once again four different brands are in the first four places, just as Ruben Xaus finishes second best Ducati rider and Christian Zaiser fails at the point door on his MV Agusta.
In the provisional ranking of the drivers, Toseland (90 pts) increased his lead over Max Biaggi (74). Bayliss (64) steals his 3rd place from his teammate Lanzi (44) who lands in 6th position behind Haga (50) and Corser (45). Regis Laconi’s score unfortunately remains unchanged after his two successive withdrawals.
Honda and Suzuki have the same number of points as their respective leaders: 90 for Honda "Toseland" and 74 for Suzuki "Biaggi". Behind, Ducati has 70 points, Yamaha 53 and Kawasaki 20.
