WSBK – From the great Toseland! –

From the great Toseland !

WSBK - From the great Toseland! -

On the land of his Ten Kate team, Toseland once again left his mark on the Superbike world championship and confirmed his position as leader in the provisional. And in Supersport, it’s again Kenan Sofuoglu (still Ten Kate!) Who wins.

James Toseland is indeed the king of Superbike at the start of the 2007 season. A season that never ceases to keep all its promises race after race. In Assen (Netherlands), under a radiant sun and in front of a large crowd, the Honda Ten Kate team of James Toseland was playing at home (read).

Another reason for the young Englishman to shine in front of all his opponents … And he did it with art! From Saturday, Toseland made an impression during the Superpole session: as he set off, Assen held his breath. Turn after turn, braking and acceleration are impeccably controlled. Toseland is clean. Clean, but above all efficient: picked up on his Honda CBR 1000 RR, it causes such a sensation you can feel the power of its motorcycle and the purity of its driving…

After his perfect lap in 1’38.603, he confided to his team manager, Ronald Ten Kate: "don’t ask me to do a second like that !"This shows all the intensity that there could be in this practice session, which saw Toseland take pole position ahead of Lanzi, Bayliss and Biaggi. And the Briton occasionally beats the record for the track established last year by Karl Muggeridge (on the Honda Ten Kate) by a few hundredths…

Sunday, the public is even more numerous and the arena of Assen always bathes in the sun: the perfect conditions for a spectacle which promises to be truly breathtaking! Because if Toseland is at the head on the grid, at the head of the championship and at the head of the bookmakers’ list, the contenders for victory are jostling at the gate. Bayliss, Biaggi, Corser: all have the knife between their teeth !

Biaggi first: narrowly qualified on the front line, the Roman Emperor had some setbacks in the test session. Twelfth after the first official session on Friday, Biaggi sees his old demons come back to the surface … Nothing is going any more at Alstare until the moment when the team manager, Francis Batta, is going to hit the table: he is explains with Max and given the character of the man, he is not in the lace !

The Emperor therefore makes up for it the next day, while still grumbling after his motorcycle and his tires … Biaggi remains Biaggi, but he is there. !

Just like Bayliss, even if he is – once is not usual – preceded by his teammate Lanzi on the grid. The two losers at the start of the weekend are the men from Yamaha: corser is sixth in the second row and Haga fifteenth in the fourth row. The show promises to be grandiose and everyone will watch the rise of Japanese in the package !

And this is what actually happens: from the first completed lap of the first race led by Toseland, Haga is in fifth position! His festival has only just begun and he goes as far as leading the race in the fifth round! Imagine the feat of starting from the second half of the grid to lead the race ahead of Toseland, Bayliss, Corser and Biaggi in just five laps … Haga is a brilliant and spectacular driver and that is also why ‘we love it.

But the Japanese festival in Assen was not going to last and the Japanese soon found himself replaced by a supercharged Iberian pilot: as in Valence two weeks earlier (read), Ruben Xaus was in great shape and came to play the spoilsport at the head of the race. He leads four laps before Toseland decides once and for all to impose his law and win the first round ahead of Haga and Xaus. The show is grandiose: the afternoon starts off with a bang !

Best round of the round: 1 ‘39.906 – Bayliss (10th round)
Best lap in previous race: 1 ‘40.767 – Bayliss (2006)

The second round is not to be outdone and sees the great explanation between a Toseland – always him! – and a full blown Bayliss. The Australian does not give up and is ultimately the only obstacle on the road to the double for the driver Ten Kate.

Behind, Biaggi who had finished the first round much too far (6th) makes up for it somewhat by pocketing third place in favor of an engine failure of Haga’s Yamaha, which deprives the Japanese of his second podium of the day. The Roman is a little varnished in history and Batta can give a little "phew" of relief … The fact remains that if Biaggi keeps the second place in the championship, Toseland takes a good head start at Assen and leads the championship with now 32 points ahead of the Roman and 52 points over Haga…

Supersport World Championship in Assen

We were waiting for Sebastien Charpentier to return, but it is once again the Turkish pilot Sofuoglu who wins, to the delight of the Ten Kate brothers who are definitely in the spotlight on their Dutch lands. !

"It hurts all over, but I expected it", declared Sebastien at the finish of the Supersport race, which he finished in sixth position after having fought against his opponents and his own pains…

Exhausted, the French double world champion remains optimistic for the future: "today i fought against pilots who are all 100%. Me, I’m not yet and that’s all the difference", he explains in his traditional video interview with Site. And indeed, when you see the Turkish Sofuoglu evolving on the track, you say to yourself that you have to be in full possession of your physical means to compete with a pilot. so talented and to whom everything smiles…

Poleman for a few hundredths of a second ahead of Charpentier, Sofuoglu has remained stuck in his clouds since the start of the season. And he scored in Assen, with the manner, a new victory to his young prize list.

Big first: we even saw a few Turkish flags blooming in the stands! Just behind Sofuoglu, it is the third man of the Ten Kate team who sticks to it: Andrew, the former Supersport world champion in 2001, replacing Sebastien Charpentier in Valence, saw his contract with the team Ten Kate renewed for Assen. Three top riders in the same team, sure that the Dutch brothers were looking for the Grand Schlem in Supersport by classifying their three bikes on the three steps of the podium…

Failed: they are even for a double "only". Because the third man is none other than Fabien Foret, in great shape on the Kawasaki of the Gil Motor Sport team. Eye-catching and go-getter, he manages to climb onto the front of the race despite a motorcycle slightly behind in engine performance. But Fabien loves Assen, where he has twice won Supersport heats – the last of which just ahead of Sebastien Charpentier, who was battling for his first world title in 2005..

Small disappointment however for Fabien who, believing to have completed the last lap of the race, slowed down in the straight line … And Pitt passed to carry out the true ultimate revolution! Fabien went around, but too late … He stupidly lost second place in the race, but kept second place in the general classification of the championship behind Sofuoglu.

Note the very beautiful seventh place of David Checa of the Christophe Guyot team, a week just after the disappointment of the 24H Moto du Mans (read).

As for Yoann Tiberio, he is in complete collapse: suffering from his injured shoulder, he does not manage to do better than 22nd in the race….

In two weeks at Monza, there is no doubt that Charpentier will be in better shape and will have recovered all his means. And it will take a General Seb in great shape to kick the buttocks of a Sofuoglu for the moment untouchable, as untouchable as Charpentier himself last year … And we saw a completely different scenario in the second part championship. In short, anything can still happen … Stay connected !
