WSBK - New Marseillaise in Supersport -

An unprecedented Marseillaise this weekend at Monza: this time, the conductor in 600 cc is not Sebastien Charpentier but the young Yoann Tiberio! In Superbike, Troy Bayliss signs a second consecutive double, his third at Monza… Report.

The fourth round of the World Superbike was contested this weekend in Italy, on the Monza track. And this year again, the 96,000 spectators were treated to three superb races.

In Superbike, Corser alias Mister Superpole struck again and started from first place. But at three tenths crouched Bayliss while Barros and Laconi completed the first row…

Monza, 05/07/2006 – Magical weekend for the French rookie. Video Site (long version).

The second 100% Anglo-Saxon line includes in the order Walker, Pitt, Muggeridge and Toseland.

The Japanese Kagayama and Haga follow in third place, the Italian Rolfo and the second French Fabien Foret while Sebastien Gimbert is in 18th place..

On the Supersport side, Sebastien Charpentier again signs from a long way – 1.2 seconds! – the best time ahead of Vizzielo, Fujiwara and Curtain.

Monza, 05/07/2006 – Third race for Yoann Tiberio and first victory ! Video Site (short version).

In the second row are Roccoli, Harms, Sufuoglu and the French rookie Tiberio. Chambon misses the third row by 2 hundredths and Berger, Enjolras and Leblanc are respectively 22nd, 24th and 29th.

Once is not custom, we begin this report with the Supersport category, where for the fourth time of the year – in four races! – France brilliantly illustrated itself by winning !

Supersport Race

Monza, 05/07/2006 – Sebastien Charpentier climbs onto the podium after a superb comeback. Video Site.

This time, the winner is not the reigning world champion Sebastien Charpentier … The victorious French driver of the weekend is none other than Yoann Tiberio, who was only competing in his third race at the international level !

After a start from eighth place which he describes as "way", Yoann quickly adopts a very high pace which allows him to overtake almost all the drivers who are in front of him. Almost, because Charpentier and Curtain are serious customers who have taken to finishing in the first two places in each race….

But luck will give the young Frenchman of 19 a well-deserved boost: from the fifth round, Sebastien Charpentier is forced to make a passage through the pit lane following his stolen start: "I anticipated the departure, that’s all", explains Winston Ten Kate Honda n ° 16.

From then on, the track is free for Kevin Curtain and Yoann … The two pilots then engage in a superb battle for victory until the engine of the Australian’s Yamaha R6 fails at the end of the straight line, four laps from the finish! Yoann can then manage the lead he has over Robbin Harms.

In the background, General Seb’s performance is far from disappointing. Despite his stint in the pits, the Charentais climbed to the third step of the podium after a superb comeback. "When I came back to the track I had only one obsession: to finish on the podium! I gave it my all and even almost fell under braking in the first chicane", admits the 2005 world champion.

Sebastien therefore consolidates his lead in the championship over the unlucky Kevin: "as Curtain does not finish, it is a good operation in the championship. I add that I am very happy for Yoann !"

The French was not the only one to show tenacity: his teammate Kenan Sufuoglu – 20th in the first round – was able to climb to fifth place just behind Massimo Roccoli, first Yamaha.

Among the good surprises of this event we find Stuart Easton: the Briton took advantage of his wildcard on Ducati to sign a remarkable sixth place. Note also the tenth place of Stephane Chambon on his ZX-6R and the 13th place of David Checa of Team GMT 94. Maxime Berger is again one place from the first point while Gregory Leblanc is ranked 23rd.

The French remain the only ones to have won in Supersport this season. Hopefully they will continue this series on May 29 at Silverstone !

Superbike Race

In Superbike, Troy Bayliss won both rounds again, without compromising the suspense of the races mainly hosted by Corser, Haga, Barros, Toseland and Laconi.

On his Suzuki n ° 1, Troy Corser was not unworthy: victim in the first round of a particularly destabilizing brake lever which "sometimes was ok, sometimes could almost touch the handlebars", the reigning world champion manages to climb on the podium behind Bayliss and Barros.

In the second round, the Crocodile is forced to admit that the Kangaroo is once again untouchable: "it’s always a little frustrating to feel almost helpless, but I certainly won’t give up", he declares on the descent of his second step of the podium before specifying that"the Ducati can get out of corners like no other motorcycle – especially four cylinders". When will the Honda SP, Aprilia RSV or Suzuki TL return? ?

Also on GSX-R 1000, Fabien Foret confirmed his progress and finished both races in thirteenth place, not without having improved his final time by 14 seconds! "I was not very happy with my result in the first race because I had some small problems", he explains." I had a good start but a small problem with my front tire prevented me from attacking hard and I did not have fun in the race"…

Fabien says to himself on the other hand "much more satisfied with my second race because I fought well with Lanzi, Nakatomi and Fabrizio"- that he is less than a tenth ahead of the checkered flag…

At Yamaha, Noriyuki Haga resumed his leadership status after being overtaken by Norick Abe in the last event (read). So Nitro Nori fought hard to offer his R1 the third step of the podium in the second round and a good fourth place in first..

On the French side, Sebastien Gimbert on his R1 Yamaha France – Ipone had a weekend "difficult":"the first race was not so bad (12th, Editor’s note) but the second was not good for me", regrets the n ° 16, victim of a faulty clutch. The results of the Japanese of the French team are hardly better: Abe does not score any point – fall then 16th – while Nakatomi finishes 10th then 12th.

On his Kawasaki ZX-10R, Regis Laconi barely came close to 5th place during the first round on a circuit he particularly appreciates: "I made a small mistake and Karl and Andrew walked past", regrets the Moselle. In the second round, an electronic problem puts his Ninja out of service, which is all the more annoying as his teammates Nieto and Walker finished respectively 8th and 9th…

One of the most striking events of this weekend is undoubtedly the awakening of the Honda, in sharp contrast to their passage literally unnoticed two weeks ago in Valencia (read).

In the first round, Alex Barros was very quick and easily got rid of Laconi and Muggeridge. Then the fight is tighter to get on the podium but the Brazilian still manages to dominate Corser and Haga and offers himself a well-deserved 2nd place..

The second round of Barros was no less contested: exerting constant pressure on Toseland in the last laps, Alex overtook the Briton in the last section and recovered 4th place in the race … but also that of the general classification occupied by Haga !

James Toseland barely managed to keep his third place overall after a white result – biting on the grass with his front wheel – and a 5th place in the second round. "I’m not happy with my crash in the first run, or the conclusion of the second. I ran out of gas and it allowed Barros to overtake me", the Englishman gets angry.

In the general classification, Bayliss takes off (175 points) and only Corser remains in contact with 139 points. Toseland, Barros and Haga are in a pocket square while Foret and Gimbert go up slowly but surely…

Next meeting with the Mondial Superbike on May 29 at Silverstone !
