Betrayed by the electronics and then by the mechanics of his Ducati, Carlos Checa more than deserved to win the double last night: to see him fly over the Miller Motorsports track with Max Biaggi, we say to ourselves that the "old men" of MotoGP have nice leftovers !
Unfortunately for the n ° 7, his two withdrawals are also synonymous with the end of the title race. Apart from a slump at Monza, Carlos had shown impressive consistency so far. But with this double bubble, Checa is now 116 points behind the new leader of the Biaggi championship. Caramba, still missed !
Too bad too, the fall of Jonathan Rea which deprives not only the Irishman of precious points (he is 3rd at 106 points from Biaggi) but also Cal Crutchlow of a solid result. By avoiding Honda rider Ten Kate, the # 35 R1 had momentarily left the track and restarted in 13th position to finish in a disappointing 11th place.
So not easy for the Yamaha team to turn the "Ben Spies" page and be relegated to the background! Nonetheless, rookie Crutchlow and two-time world champion Toseland should not be underestimated: No.35 and No.52 were both new to the American track – unlike Ben last year – and are still racing for 3rd place in the championship..
The fall of Rea, on the other hand, benefited European manufacturers: on the 4th lap, just after the fall of Johnny, no less than seven "Made in Europe" motorcycles (Ducati, Aprilia and BMW) monopolized the first 10 places! We only saw them on the track, only the Suz ‘of Haslam and Guintoli and the Yam’ of Toseland managing to resist..
We have seen him much less and yet he deserves our helmet: Shane Byrne made a bewildering comeback in the 1st round … Good – excellent even! – last in the 2nd lap, the Englishman made his way to 6th place, finishing in the wheel of Corser !
Starting again from his 11th place on the grid in the second round, the n ° 67 had to fight like a lion the whole race against his "Ducati colleagues" Jakub Smrz and Michel Fabrizio, the hot Jonathan Rea (Honda) and our worthy representative Sylvain Guintoli (Suzuki). We also note – chauvinism obliges – that Syl ‘did not let it pass !
Eighth and sixth, our Frenchie also deserves congratulations: on a track he was just discovering, Syl ‘apparently took a lot of fun and collected important points. Our national n ° 50 is at the gates of the provisional Top10 and will have taken advantage of this event to regain confidence. Come on Sylvain !
This weekend was also marked by Aprilia’s first double in the SBK World Cup, which allowed her to take the lead in the constructors’ championship. The performance is all the more impressive as the manufacturer of Noale only reinvested this championship one and a half ago. !
The comparison with BMW – which also arrived in 2009 – is inevitable: eleven podiums and six victories this year for the lion brand against a single podium for the propeller one. But the Germans have not said their last word: Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus are driving faster and faster.
We have seen it, particularly in the 1st round: the BMW does not yet go the distance … When their S1000RR manages to save the Pirelli for the end of the race, who knows if the n ° 11 and 111 will not finish them – also 1st and 2nd ?!
Finally, Max Biaggi’s victories should not be devalued: the Roman Emperor certainly benefited from Carlos Checa’s bad luck … But you had to be there to take advantage of it! With this third double, the famous n ° 3 takes control of a championship that no Italian driver has won … This shows if the atmosphere will be high in a short month in Misano: stay connected !
