Analysis of the World Superbike at Magny-Cours
What an intense pleasure it was for the French public to see Sylvain Guintoli fighting for pole on Saturday and then for victory on Sunday during the two rounds of the 2010 World Superbike Grand Final at Magny-Cours !
No quarter for Guintoli
After showing us that he had the level of Cal Crutchlow – "Mister" 6 poles in 2010 – in time trials, our favorite n ° 50 showed admirable fighting spirit in the race against champion Max Biaggi, at Cal Crutchlow decidedly very swift, as well as a Michel Fabrizio ready for anything, even to play fairings…
Too bad, however, that the party was partially spoiled by a questionable disqualification in the first race … Straight away in a chicane, our good Sylvain takes the trouble to get back on the track without disturbing – or overtaking of course – his little comrades. But her delicate attention is not enough !
So according to the race direction, the Frenchie should have taken a corridor located ten meters further … A penalty is therefore imposed in the form of a passage in the pit lane, synonymous with tumbling beyond the Top 10. Guintoli does not run and continues his race as if nothing had happened: a black flag is intended for him a few laps later.
But our Gallic steers and completes the 23 laps of the race in the company of his opponents, under the encouragement of his audience! He crossed the finish line in the wheel of Max Biaggi but was not credited with his 5th place. Fortunately, Sylvain is entitled to a second chance.
Gone on the hat of wheels in the second round, the local of the stage leads for eight laps but will again be deprived of the podium … And this time Michel Fabrizio, the Italian who nicknamed himself "the hurricane", poses problem. Indeed, the n ° 84 wants at all costs to see its official Ducati shine one last time..
Sylvain defends himself as much as he can in the last lap, even passes in front of Michel but the latter is more aggressive – motivated, reckless, foolish? – and pushes our compatriot off the podium in the last few hundred meters.
In the end, the French will not blame the Italian … The main thing is that the name of Guintoli appears before that of Fabrizio on the shelves in 2010! With 197 points, Sylvain won for his first year in the SBK World Cup a beautiful 7th place. Fabrizio is 8th with 195 pts. N / A !
Very moved, Michel Fabrizio took a long time to get off his official 1098 … The 26-year-old boy was even in tears when he left the Ducati which he drove for three seasons, first alongside the triple champion Troy Bayliss, then triple vice-champion Noriyuki Haga.
We were also expecting a lot from n ° 41 this weekend! Since 2004, the Japanese had always climbed, at least once if not twice, on the podium of Magny-Cours. This year – to forget for him – Nitro Nori had to settle for a 5th place in the second round. Disappointing.
Final bouquet at Magny-Cours
On the contrary, Cal Crutchlow impressed us again: after obtaining his sixth pole position, the Yamaha rider took 1st and then 2nd place in the race! Wouldn’t n ° 35 follow in the footsteps of a certain n ° 11? ?
Replacing Ben Spies this year at Yamaha Sterilgarda, Cal brilliantly took over from the American by pocketing the "title" of best rookie of the year! Admittedly, Big Ben had also won the title – the only true one – of world champion … But the performance of Little Cal must not be diminished for all that..
So we can’t wait to see Crutchlow land in MotoGP within the French Yamaha Tech3 team. Will he be able to climb to the rank of best private driver in his first season in the premier class, as Spies is doing? Answer next year on Site…
Like Max Biaggi, Carlos Checa is doing the opposite to Spies or Crutchlow and is adapting better and better to the Superbike. But unlike Italian, Spanish does not benefit from the official support of the manufacturer of his motorcycle..
On several occasions this year, "El Torro" complained about the lack of watts of its 1198 compared to the 4-cylinder in-line (Japanese), but also and especially in V (Italian) more and more powerful … Yesterday at the end of the second round, even Crutchlow was literally sickened by the corrections the RSV4 was inflicting on his R1 in accelerations. !
Best Ducati rider, n ° 7 however managed to finish the season in 3rd place in the general classification, far behind n ° 3 and n ° 91 (Haslam) but just ahead of n ° 65 (Rea)! A great performance for the 38-year-old from Barcelona, who has decided to postpone it next year !
Injured at Imola, Johnny Rea tried to keep his 3rd place overall, but pain got the better of his determination. Exceeded in the championship from the 1st French round, the Irishman had no interest in running the second round and ended his year with a forfeit.
A bad luck sleeve ?
But beware, the Irishman will return next year at the controls of a Fireblade that Team Ten Kate seems to have now understood. Archi-dominator in Supersport – nine titles in ten years including the one acquired by Sofuoglu this Sunday! -, the Batavian team has returned to the fore in the SBK World Cup this year … Will it come back to first place next year? Suspense.
Thirteenth and last event on the 2010 calendar, Magny-Cours did not smile to everyone … So, for example, the BMW Motorrad team is leaving the Nivernais circuit without having scored a single point this weekend. A zero point unprecedented this season for the Germans, directly related to the sudden ousting of Davide Tardozzi? Difficult to decide…
We note after all, Xaus fell alone in the first heat. In "common agreement with his team", the Spaniard n ° 111 preferred not to take the start of the second! For his part, Troy Corser suffered two breakdowns on his S1000RR. What to cool the enthusiasm of Leon Haslam, expected as the messiah at BMW next year ?!
Likewise, James Toseland did not cross the finish line yesterday. This is the second time in a row that the Briton has left empty-handed from a racing weekend, and it could not be worse: in the process of finalizing the contract signatures for 2011 !
Who next year will drive this double world Superbike champion through a slump? At the moment, no one knows. Just as no one can say for sure if Max Biaggi will defend his title next year, or if he will prefer to take care of his little Ines…
As for Sylvain Guintoli, if the official announcement has not yet been sent to the journalists’ mailboxes, our colleague Eric Malherbe ensures that we will see the n ° 50 racing next year in the World Superbike. !
"The Frenchman signed with the Guandalini team. An Italian structure based in the Czech Republic which will bear the name of Ducati Liberty Racing. Thus, Sylvain will have for box partner the Czech Jakub Smrz and will ride a Ducati 1198R", he warns on his RadioSBK site.
Let’s hope that this new Franco-Italian couple will do as well as the one formed by Laconi and the 999 in 2004. Or even better: that year, Regis had dominated the category, collecting 5 poles, 14 podiums including 7 wins and 6 fastest laps in the race … but it was beaten in the championship by his teammate James Toseland !
