WSBK Malaysia (2): Rea stumbles on Davies !

If the first corner of the second Superbike round at Sepang was agitated, the rest of the race was much quieter … until this last anthological lap, at the end of which Jonathan Rea almost won his first WSBK world title !
Second Superbike race
Chaz Davies took off particularly badly from the grid but recovered by doing his first reports well. Max Biaggi is more aggressive on the brakes than at the start of the first race and finds himself inside Tom Sykes.
But the Roman Emperor has not quite locked his first place: Sylvain Guintoli takes advantage of a slight opening to impose his Honda n ° 1 to the famous n ° 3. Surprised, the latter raises his RSV4, which hits Sykes’s Kawasaki and falls !
"Mad Max" gets up instantly and walks towards his motorcycle which luckily no rider has hit. Chaz Davies leads the first right-left of the Malaysian route ahead of Sylvain Guintoli, Jonathan Rea, Leon Haslam, Jordi Torres, Michael van den Mark, Niccolo Canepa, Leon Camier, Leandro Mercado, Randy de Puniet, etc. Christophe Ponsson is 14th … Sykes 16th !
Davies thus becomes the only one able to delay Rea’s title: for this, the Ducati rider must score two points more than the championship leader! Guintoli, third a few lengths from Rea, hopes to play the referees. Max Biaggi, on the other hand, went to the pits and had to abandon his second round. The "der des der" for the Roman Emperor ?
Chaz Davies and Jonathan Rea turn at exactly the same pace during the second lap. The Ducati n ° 7 and the Kawasaki n ° 65 quickly left the peloton, from which the Aprilia n ° 81 of Jordi Torres escaped! Sylvain Guintoli is threatened by his teammate Van den Mark. Haslam is in their aspi…
At the very end of the 3rd lap, the Supersport world champion climbed to fourth position under braking on the return straight but the Frenchie responded tit for tat on the next braking, at the end of the pit straight! The fight benefits Torres who moves away, as well as Haslam who gets closer…
At the same time, Tom Sykes goes back one by one his adversaries: the English Ninja propels himself in eighth position by depositing Niccoloe Canepa and his Ducati Althea in the straight line of the pits. The 2013 champion attacks his 5th lap, two seconds behind Leon Haslam.
But "Major Tom" did too much and reached the limit of the grip of his front tire in turn 9 … Sykes lifted his ZX-10R and started off again as if nothing had happened, in 19th and penultimate place , more than 41 seconds behind Chaz Davies who is still leading the race.
When the 7th lap is launched, Jonathan Rea him, has two small seconds behind the lead driver. Jordi Torres is 1.5 seconds behind Kawasaki # 65 and 3.5 seconds ahead of Honda # 1 of our national Guintoli, still threatened by Van den Mark and Haslam…
Twenty seconds behind Chaz Davies, Randy de Puniet is fighting with Matteo Baiocco, Roman Ramos and Leon Camier for 10th place. Christophe Ponsson rolls in a solitary 15th place, but Tom Sykes turns three seconds faster than him on the lap and is four seconds behind…
Davies starts the second half of the race 2.5 seconds ahead of potential World Champion Rea. The latter maintains his lead over Torres beyond a second. Guintoli is still in fourth position, but Haslam passed Van den Mark.
the star Biaggi out of the race, the hot Sykes out of the championship, the attention of (TV) spectators freezes on the Davies-Rea duel. The Ducati rider went on four laps without any worries and maintained his lead at nearly three seconds. But in the penultimate lap, "JR" unpacks !
The gap between the two leaders drops to 1.5 seconds when it comes time to attack the last lap … As if unbridled, the ZX-10R climbs irresistibly on the Panigale – slowed down by more tired tires? – and finds himself in his rear wheel when embarking on the long straight back !
The n ° 65 Kawasaki rider makes his 4-cylinder do the talking and overtakes the n ° 7 Ducati. Rea plants a huge braking, shifts well outwards to dive towards the rope but widens slightly. "Chazie" runs inside, "JR" tries to catch up but hits the Ducati !
Fortunately, the two motorcycles remain on their wheels. Chaz Davies has the advantage on the go-around and is rolling towards his third victory in four races! As in the first race, an Aprilia climbs on the podium: this time it is Jordi Torres’ n ° 81. Honda’s Guintoli and Van den Mark complete the Top 5.
Davies pocketed the 25 points of the victory while his great rival in the championship Sykes was satisfied with the point of 17th place. The Welshman takes second place in the provisional standings and becomes the last driver who can – mathematically – beat Rea, whose lead is now 144 points.
The next event is scheduled for September 20 in Jerez. To be crowned world champion, Jonathan Rea will have to maintain his lead beyond 125 points at the end of the first round. The Kawasaki team – based in Spain – is already planning a huge party … Stay tuned !
