Launched in the wet but disturbed by the return of the sun, the second race of the 2016 World Superbike in Assen was particularly hard to follow. In the end, however, Jonathan Rea’s new victory is clear and flawless…

Second Superbike Assen race 2016

Tom Sykes took off perfectly from his pole and took control of the race declared "Wet". He is followed by Jonathan Rea, Chaz Davies, Nicky Hayden, Michael van den Mark, Davide Giugiano, Alex Lowes, Xavi Fores, Lorenzo Savadori and Josh Brookes. Lucas Mahias is 16th…

Marcus Reiterberger and Sylvain Guintoli are the only drivers to have bet on an intermediate rear tire rather than "rain". They were probably hoping to ride on a drier track than it is at the start of the race and bring up the rear..

Rea lodged in his teammate‘s wheel from the first lap. The peloton follows the factory Kawasaki in an impressive and unbroken line, completed by Leon Camier in 13th position. Rea makes things more difficult by suddenly losing six places at the start of the 2nd round !

The sun is shining again in Assen and the track is seriously drying out in places. However, out of the question for the pilots to join the pits and change tires: the "rain" covers are still essential on most of the circuit..

Sykes continues his race in front and even isolates himself slightly. Fores is lost in the final chicane of the 2nd lap: the Honda n ° 60 and 69 appear in front of him in the short straight line of the pits! A short second behind, Jonathan Rea leads the hunting party made up of turbulent Brookes, Fores, Savadori, Davies and Giugliano.

At the start of the 3rd lap, Van den Mark came out on top of the first sequence! Behind, another driver stands out … The British champion Josh Brookes goes up the field with disconcerting ease: outside on Sykes, inside on Hayden … the Australian propels his BMW to the lead at the start of the 5th lap !

Unlike his little comrades, the No. 25 Team Milwaukee has absolutely nothing to lose in the championship and turns significantly faster. As a result, the peloton quickly bursts: VDM, Hayden and Rea try to follow Brookes, while Fores, Giugliano, Savadori, Davies, Sykes and Lowes let go….

The sun is now hard and the track is visibly dry, but only Roman Ramos goes through the pits. Brookes takes a turn at Reiterberger in the 8th loop. Josh then counts a small second ahead of Hayden and Rea … The "Number One" decides to return to the pits, like Sykes, then Torres !

The Ninja n ° 1 came out of the pits in 13th position with a rear slick, ahead of his teammate n ° 66 who selected an intermediary! Brookes and Hayden continue to turn the lead on their wet tires, three seconds ahead of Davies and five ahead of Lowes. Van den Mark decides to change tires at the end of the 8th lap.

On the 10th lap, the situation remains confused: Brookes leads in front of Davies and Hayden, but behind, Lowes in turn returns to the pits and gives up his fourth place to Mahias who is 24 seconds behind the leading trio! The fastest man on the track is Sykes, seventh behind Rea…

Brookes and Hayden change tires on lap 12: Lucas Mahias is therefore in the lead! The two official Kawasaki nevertheless turned 10 seconds faster than the Franco-Grolandais: Rea and Sykes took back the lead on the 13th lap. Former frontman Brookes falls while biting while braking on white line…

Five laps from the end, no driver is riding on wet tires. Rea and Sykes are 8 seconds ahead of Van den Mark and 19 (!) Over Lorenzo Savadori, 26 over Davies, 28 over Lowes, 30 over Hayden, 36 over Giugliano, 48 over Fores and 51 over Guintoli which closes the Top 10.

One lap later, Hayden easily passed Lowes when accelerating in front of the pits: the American was in 6th position and was then three seconds behind Davies … But "Chazie" rolled a few tenths of a second faster than Nicky.

In front, Jonathan is ahead of Tom by a good second, but the n ° 66 does not let go: "Magic Michael" is at 11 seconds, which allows "Major Tom" to attack without ulterior motive. the 2013 champion wrings the handle to the max but its rear tire struggles to transmit power to the ground.

The commas left by the Pirelli of the Kawasaki n ° 66, including at the exit of the fastest curves, are sublime but ineffective. The ruthless "JR" therefore flies to a second consecutive double in Assen, his second also this season..

Tom Sykes climbs on his 69th podium in World Superbike, the 499th for a British rider! The English Ninja lets slip 5 additional points in the championship against Rea (122 to 181), but goes back to Chaz Davies (136), 5th in this second Dutch round.

Celebrated as a winner, Michael van den Mark completes the podium of this "Mad Sunday" in Assen. The Honda rider took a few points from his teammate Hayden (6th) in the provisional. Fourth this afternoon, Lorenzo Savadori reaches the World Top 10! The 2015 Superstock 1000 champion finds himself 7 points behind Sylvain Guintoli.

The next distribution of points in World Superbike – and World Supersport! – is scheduled for two weeks in Imola. Until then, stay connected to the Journal Moto du net !
