Carlos Checa signed his fifth pole of the season on the Nurburgring this afternoon. Of "his" season, we should rather say, since the Spaniard does not only collect pole positions: out of 18 contested races, Carlos has already climbed 15 times on the podium, including 10 times on the top step !
By beating by four tenths the German track record set last year by Biaggi, El Torro further consolidates his status as 2011 World Superbike rider of the year. And the world title is getting closer: Checa has 62 points ahead of Biaggi and 71 over Melandri, while there are only eight races to go.
Faithful to his predecessors – Crutchlow in 2010 and Spies in 2009 – Eugene Laverty had a superb Superpole session and placed his Yamaha n ° 58 just behind the Ducati Althea n ° 7. Fourth in the championship, the Irishman can no longer claim the title … but he could well play the referee in the attribution of the 2nd place !
Even reduced by a painful foot – he hit a piece of debris on the track on Friday – Max Biaggi did not let go and posted his Aprilia n ° 1 in 3rd position, ahead of the Yamaha n ° 33 of his compatriot and great rival Marco Melandri. Will the latter benefit from a little help from Laverty this end of the season? ?
With a time just over 1.55, Noriyuki Haga takes the lead in the second row at the controls of his private Aprilia. Winner of a round at the Nurburgring last year, the Japanese driver will try to climb to his second podium in 2011.
Tom Sykes on Kawasaki, Leon Haslam on BMW and Sylvain Guintoli on Ducati complete second place. Stopped at the Superpole 2 stadium, Jonathan Rea leads the next row at the controls of his Honda. Like Nitro Nori, Johnny won at the Nurburgring last year.
Discarded much of the season due to injury, Rea is sure to ride next year on the new version of the Fireblade and is therefore under no pressure: we can expect great things from him tomorrow! Victim of a fall during qualifying, Michel Fabrizio and his Suzuki will start from the back of the 3rd row behind Rea, Jakub Smrz and Mark Aitchison.
Our second national representative, Maxime Berger (read in particular our), was able to compete in the first Superpole session and qualified 14th, behind Leon Camier but ahead of Ayrton Badovini and Joan Lascorz. Four old acquaintances bring up the rear in 5th row: Troy Corser, James Toseland, Roberto Rolfo and Makoto Tamada – replacing Xaus at Honda Ten Kate.
